i had just turned on my pc and attempted to open my browser.

soon as i tried to open my browser my pc just DIED. it just snapped and lost power.

now i have the task of trying to figure out what to replace? power supply, mb.......

the motherboad has the green led light that stays on, but when i try to power up nothing happens. the cpu fan "hiccups" when i press the power button but nothing else happens. ive removed all other components, including the hdd and pci components and tried to power up and nothing happens.

i ordered a new power supply from newegg, it wont arrive until friday but im trying to find out if there is a way i can test the current power supply?
 
Paperclip trick, but that only tests if it can power on, not sustain a load.
trick: short a green and black wire on the 24pin main ATX connector. This should turn on the PSU (disconnect everything except the 12v wall plug, btw).

Report back if the new PSU doesn't solve your issue.

heh.

if the test worries you, then don't do it. although, this is a completely safe test. if you don't believe me, you can google for yourself. ;) i used atx PSUs at work with the paperclip all the time to test fpga boards.

i dont wanna have a dumb blond moment, but what do you mean "short."


btw, to the last poster above me, the mb light does turn green, but when i press the power button the psu fan spins 2 inches then stops and nothing else happens. its like the fan "hiccups" and stops.

new psu delivery date is tomorrow from newegg, much sooner than i expected but its good i can test the psu and see what happens.

i called the fire department already they said they'll be on stand by
 
"short" is short for short-circuit; meaning, connect the two pins/wires with a paperclip. it's the opposite of an open-circuit. ;)

if you're concerned about safety, use electrical tape on the exposed paperclip, and be ready to yank the cord out of the wall; oh, and have a fire extinguisher handy. while i've never needed a fire extinguisher when doing the paperclip trick, i'm not there. :p

eh, new one comes in tomorrow, just wait for it, lol.
 
new psu came.
i plugged it in. the cpu and video card fan spin for about 1 second then everything is dead again.
i turn off the psu, turn on the psu, try to start the pc again and same thing happens: cpu fan spins for 1 second then dead.

so im assuming i replace the motherboard? i cant think of what else it could be
the motherboard is p5nsli asus
 
Had a similar problem last week. CPU fan would hiccup at start-up, then was totally dead. Thought it was the PSU, but it tested ok. I disconnected all PCI-E and USB devices and left one stick of RAM in the motherboard. When it fired up, I put the GPU back in and it was dead again. Tried an older GPU and has been problem free since. Since it was unattended when it died, I don't know how it happened or what happened when it died, but now it looks like I'm in the market for a new GPU - so much for the BFG lifetime warranty... :(
 
is your asus mobo older than 3yrs old? if not, i might still be under warranty. you can check with asus.

if it's out of warranty, then yah, that msi G31 board should do fine. though, it would help if you listed out the rest of your components. if you're running sli, then that board obviously wouldn't allow you to continue doing so.

holy shi***T. you just solved my problem. i removed the gpu and everything powered up just fine. im in the market for a new GPU too LMAOOOOOOO. so funny, but i appreciate your post, you just saved my sanity and hours of pain.

i even tried the old power supply, and it works fine now that the gpu is not inserted. so im on the phone with EVGA to see if i can get use of my lifetime limited warranty hopefully htey can ship it to me for free?? (i hiope) **edite** (they're saying i didnt register the product within 30 days of purchase so now its no longer lifetime warranty. that sucks)

heh, I assumed you tried that already when you said you removed all other components. its one of the steps in the basic troubleshooting guide. ;)
 
Glad to help. :) I didn't know a bad GPU could cause that either! I'll probably be going with EVGA this time around too - how did they treat you when you called?

yeah. i pretty much butchered that one. i assumed i tried that already too LMAOOOO.
but you are absolutely correct. i should have caught this right off the bat, i dont know how i missed it (i think its because i dont have onboard video....that may have clouded my judgment and decision making! silly me!!) :mad::mad:

they said because i didnt register my gpu within 30 days of purchase, its no longer lifetime warranty. i emailed my receipt though, from 2006.

i have to admit though, the processor and my gpu have performed well over 4/5 years, the gpu just took a crap obviously.

i like evga if they can replace this darn thing and stop whining about teh fact that i didnt register it within 30 days back in 2006
 
hey, will pci-e 2.0 x16 video card fit into a regular pci-e x16 slot on my motherboard?
i cant find any old pci-ex16 but there are tons of 2.0 and 2.1x16 video cards floating around. will they fit and be compatible (im assuming evga wont honor the warranty and i have to buy a new card...i need to order something ASAP, i need my desktop back)

Yes, they're backwards compatible.
 
spoke to evga again. they called me actually. they said to go ahead and make an RMA request and that they will in fact accept my request and make an exception. they will replace my card. but after the replacement i wont have a lifetime warranty again, it will only be one year warranty.

which is fine, im glad my card will be replaced.

they sent me a 9600gt. i think that smokes my older 7900gs that died?

anyway, im happy. things back to normal with my "upgrade"
