Which CPU Cooler

System in sig. No overclocking on the CPU, but have a VGA silencer coming so I can open up the 9800. Has anyone had any experience with either of these heatsink/fans? One of the factors is that I don't have an open 5 1/4 drive slot, but I do have a 3 1/2 and would like to have control of the fan from the front.

will either of those even work with your socket 423 board? both of those only have attachments for socket A and socket 478. im not sure if the brackets from the 478 will work with the 423's

I would stay away from thoes blowers, i think most people do.

I was under the understanding that the P4's are socket 478's.. (and after furthur research, I've found I'm an idiot.). I looked at the P4 1.8 on newegg to check, and it's listed as a 478. But now on Intel's website, it's a 423.. .Shit!! Ordered the thermaltake listed above. Also, in the post above, what would make them "shitty"?

socket 423 was the older willamette p4's
socket 478 is the newer northwood and prescott p4's

I see.. Thank you for the info. It doesn't seem that there are many solutions (on newegg at least) for 423's. Again, it seems the Zalman 7000 is 478.

the socket doesnt matter at all, dont 423's use the same heatsink retention system as the 478s?

For about the same price you can get the Zalman CNPS7000-alcu which is a far better HSF and is very quiet. Stay away from the from the ones you mentioned like the plague.

zalman or sp-94, a bit pricey, but you would be happier in the end.

Well kiddies.. the 478's don't fit the 423's... But, did put a 120mm exhaust fan, and just tried the Tt fan on my existing (shit) heatsink, and dropped temps to about 36 cpu/32 zone 1... and it got rid of the problem described above.

I'm done doing anything to this machine.

Next up.. A64!
