Which Card?

Im looking to upgrade from my Gf3 Ti500 to a new card. The card I purchase I plan to use for the couple of years before I upgrade again and want it to last and keep up with games for that long.
Was looking at the 256Mb Sapphire Radeon Pro -OEM from Newegg for 342 dollars. I also saw a 9800XT and a GF5950 for 100 dollars more.
Question is- is it worth the extra 100 dollars for either the 9800XT or the GF5950?

In my opinion, no. The slightly higher clock speeds don't qualify as worthy of $100 more.

it depends how much you want to spend. I think you're looking in the right direction though. You really can't go wrong with a 9800 of any flavor (as long as it's not a SE).

For todays games 256mb of ram onboard doesn't seem to increase performance much (if at all) however it's usefulness in future games is more likely, though yet to be determined.

If you narrow it down to 9800XT or 5950, my vote would be for the ati product, but seeing how I own neither don't go on my word alone.

A 9600 for $150 or so now and another card of the sort for a comparable price in a year would give you better bang for the buck thru the whole period than a $400 card today.

Um, not really. Spend $35 more and get a 5900SE which will add 25-50% more performance.

To the original poster, this depends on your budget. Right now, the NVIDIA 5900NU and ATI Radeon 9700 pro are great deals. The 5900NU is $184 and the 9700 pro is $209. If you can afford it I would also highly consider the 9800np or 9800pro. Both can be had for around $259 to $266. If you want even better then the 9800XT is the way to go. I would pass on the 256MB 9800 Pro. The 9800XT goes for $437.

Best bang for the buck is the mainstream leader, the 9600XT. Lower cost, good performance. Either that or save up for the next generation of cards.

It is just about the worst bang for the buck man. The 5900NU or 5900SE is superior for about $25 more.

best bang for buck cards are the midrange cards, the newest of which are the 9600XT, comes bundled with HL2, and the FX5700 which will get whatever bundle the manufacturer puts with it. Both reasonable prices now I believe and both very good midrange cards.

keep that card and wait untill games that come out will actually utilize dx9, top cards of today will drop $$ when dx 9 is needed.
Later on these top notch R9600 ect.. might not keep thier speed in future dx 9 games, you might want to keep that cash in your pockets a lil longer and see how the R9XXX or the GF5XXX perform when fully dx 9 games come out. I am using my geforce 4 ti 4200 128ddr and I read revies saying how my card out perfoms some of thses top radeons in dx 8, but sure some of them wil beat mine in dx 9 games but by little fps stepps of 3-6 , so if this is the case how abt when they come out with full dx 9 games will you your 9600 or 9700 or you geforce 5xxxultra moving at playble frames or clips of still animation !

just somthing to think about

I think the best bang for the buck is the radeon 9700Pro for $209 + free 2nd day shipping. Thats what i got upgrading from a geforceFX5600nu. I wouldn't spend $340+ on a videocard.
