Have a friend wanting a new display. I'm going to be suggesting the Dell U2311; but as I'm not sure how much she's wanting to spend, I'd like to have a recommendation for a solid TN in the $100-150 range as well. Might also be nice to know if there's a 27" 1920x1080 that's any decent in case she wants a larger physical display. I know that the Acer G245H used to rate up there, but the price is higher than I remember it being ($200 plus now as opposed to a remembered $150ish, has it stopped being made?) At that point I'm not sure why not to just go with the 2311 instead? Well... I guess better blacks and no AG sparkle.

As for requirements, she used to be a medical illustrator so I'd imagine decent color reproduction would be required, and I'm pretty sure wide-gamut would be out as it'd over-saturate things. Also she games a good deal, mostly WoW, Dragon Age, Mass Effect kind of stuff. Not so much into real FPS games. So while ghosting would be a concern a bit of input lag wouldn't. Would probably also be used for watching movies. I'm also thinking that glossy would be a deal-breaker due to lighting. Which'd eliminate the G245H.

Suggestions?

Target has clearance on Acer H213Hbmd for either $80 or $110. I got one at the Target in Milwaukee for $80. I also have a Planar PX2710MW that I snagged for $250 last October. I haven't setup the Acer yet, but I am really enjoying the Planar. I've heard good thing about the ASUS 27" models.

It'll be for an i5 2500k system with a GTX570. Running it at a decent framerate won't be an issue :)

I know but running with a huge fps ain't good as well in the days of the LCD. What is your budget?

Why don't you look at VA panels. They won't be in the 100-150 range but they'll be around the 200 range if you can stretch it that far?

I've got the BenQ EW2420 and it's great. Especially if you're not concerned about input lag and FPS gaming it'd be a great choice. It's excellent for movies too. The monitor comes with 3000:1 native contrast ratio which delivers amazing graphics and color production to the screen. It is a treat to play and watch movies on and to see the level of detail and crisp display. It is also LED backlit which is nice. It's got 2 hdmi ports, dvi, d-sub, USB ports, 2 onboard speakers. For a budget monitor that delivers amazing picture quality, the EW2420 is a smart choice. It's great for browsing as well with a nice 24" display. It retails for about $200

There are also many other VA panels out in the market if you're interested.

Well my advice, given she has a very nice computer, would be that an LCD can either make or break your PC experience. Honestly all the hardware in the world will seem like crap if your display is crap. All of the hardware in the world comes together at one point of delivery and that is your display.

So I recommend you take her to a store like Frys, Microcenter, or whatever vendor in your area and have her identify what her eyes like the best. There are options out there in no name brands that you might be surprised at how good they look. I bought my wife a AOC 22" TN that is really nice for like 129$ for her office.

Thanks for the thoughts, she went ahead and ordered the U2311h when it went on sale from dell for $240 or so shipped.
