Was looking to add an egpu to my Blade w/ 2070 Max-Q for when I'm not on the road, to drive my 3840x1600 monitor.
Well, seems a 2080Ti can't be found. Have they been discontinued due to impending release of new products, or is it COVID related?

With that being said, after the 4x penalty from TB3, what should I expect performance wise should I find a 2080Ti for E-GPU purpose?

time and time again, its been demostrated that you dont really loose much performance if at all.

If I were you I'd wait for ampere. I mean supposedly nvidia has already stopped production on 2080/2080 Ti and is clearing inventory.

So not a huge penalty by any means. Hmmmmm

Just wish I could find some more direct comparisons.

Or maybe I should just build a desktop rig. *sigh*

This should give you an idea of the penalty of EGPUs.

Old XPS 13

Old Blade Stealth

Since you plan on using an external monitor it shouldn't really be that bad.

Also, https://egpu.io/ has tons of information/details on working laptop/enclosure combos.

I too thought about the egpu way with the 2080ti and somehow I winded up with a desktop rig and also an epgu haha. Convenience wise if you move around mobile the epgu + laptop combo is best, for me I thought to myself I would never really game on mobile anyway so I just winded up using a desktop for now.

I guess the biggest thing with egpu, thunderbolt4/usb4 and new gpu are coming out. TB4 could mean some performance increase in the bandwidth portion.

Well, I wouldn't be buying a new laptop, so TB4 is not an option for me. My current laptop is a beast(9750H, 32GB, nvme, 2070 MaxQ, 240Hz 1080p IPS)

I think though that I'm probably going to build a new rig closer to the end of the year. I would do it right now, but with Zen 3 and new GPU's just a few months away, I'm just going to wait and see what is what.
