Hi all,

Planning a WC setup (my first) for sometime this winter - gonna get a 6970 and then watercool it and my current CPU (Phenom 9850).

I've been reading up on watercooling, but the thing I still feel fuzzy on is draining the loop for maintenance/case moving/etc. Unplugging tubes with liquid in them while they're inside my case sounds scary.

I've read up on quick disconnect fittings and they sound like a great idea. Trouble is, IDK where they'd go in my loop. I was thinking maybe one right between the pump and whatever is after it in the loop? So that I'd disconnect the pump from the next guy with no leak, then (over a bucket) unplug the connector from the tubing and then turn on the pump. Would that drain the loop into the bucket?

Or am I completely misunderstanding how draining a loop works?

i don't think that's a good idea. Res should always be directly before pump in a loop. You never want the pump to run dry or that may cause damage.

IMO Quick disconnect should be placed for convenience of draining and/or quick replacement of water blocks without spillage.
 
T line. Best for draining a loop. Put it at the lowest part with a line running up from it. When you want to drain just invert the T and it all runs out the bottom.
 
Wait, you want the reservoir UPstream of the pump, right? That's what I was proposing. The disconnect would be downstream of the pump, so the pump would shove liquid out of the loop, through the res, pump, and out the opening.

As for the T line, that makes a lot of sense. However, I'm very limited for space to run tubes. Is there a way I could connect a T somewhere but not actually use any extra tubing until I need to drain?
 
My understanding is that they are best suited to things like GPU blocks that you might switch out somewhat often
