I'm building a media server (tower, not rackmount) and thinking of getting a UPS as well. Now I'm in an apt with main pc in bedroom, so I have the following choices.

1. server in living room - less noise in bedroom, but can't share UPS
2. server in bedroom - more noise but shares UPS with pc
3. forget the UPS!

I'm leaning towards #1 which means I can get a cheaper UPS as well.
 
Option 1 but give the server the UPS anyway. What's more important? Your PC/HTPC or that file server that's holding TB upon TB of valuable data.
 
4. Find a closet & run a power cord in there.. Also yes to a UPS on it.
