Ikea seems to have some really high quality, sturdy, functional computer desks for not much money.

Seeing as how the closest Ikea is over 2 hours away I don't see a trip there in my future.

Where else do you people get desks? I'm sick of the crappy Wal-Mart/Target stuff, and the decent-quality desks at OfficeMax/Staples are mega-expensive. Is there anything I'm not considering?

A four-hour round trip drive to/from IKEA is well worth the effort to get a nice desk at a great price. You'd get ass-raped by IKEA's online prices and shipping costs for the same desk.

Is it really? I haven't actually seen any in person, but I was browsing through the Ikea Desk Gallery as well as their site and they really look great. The website is a bit... sparse.

Make sure you have $10k ready for this purchase.

That picture is kinda creeping me out. I used to have that exact mouse, mouse pad, keyboard, and microphone as the one on the right. And the same speakers as the one on the left. And I've owned that phone and that calculater too.

sometimes the regular places like officemax, staples and office depot have a hidden gem. Also, at least in my area, we have scandinavian design centers. Not too pricey, but really nice desks and office furniture. I got mine at Ikea btw ;)

I paid $175 at the Atlanta IKEA store for a huge Galant desk that would have cost $380 + $145 shipping had I bought it from their website. I'd say the drive is worth it.

screw ikea crap in most cases it seems like they are empty sells filled with papaer or some thing.

ive been using the same dressing table that was in our place since we moved here in 1989. everything from amigas, 386 to my current i7 has graced it.

this is what it looked like when i used to do gaming news for bw.com/game.net years ago. btw a true gaming desk is not a clean one:p

Sauder makes some great computer desks for reasonable prices. I've had several brands over the years, but I keep coming back to their Inglewood series. Only slight downside is that it's a very heavy desk.

I got it a couple years ago at Staples for around $250, but looks like they don't carry it anymore. Great thing was they offer free shipping (I think over $100). Best place I could find now is here: http://computer-desks.officefurniture.com/Fruitwood-Executive-Desk-SAU-1031-110.aspx

but you get raped with that $69 freight charge.

check goodwill, i got a workstation desk(all be it without the fancy extra racks for computers, just a file cabinet). but still the table top is 1 1/2'' thick, i stand on when i need to hang posters

craigslist, yard/tag sale. or if you're feeling awesome, build one. :D

10k desk does not look like it is worth 10k.

Haha I couldn't tell the exact story since I was a n00b back then, but theres a guy name Lantec paid $10k for that POS desk.

Find out if there is a office furniture supply store near you that offers previously leased desks.

I found a very nice solid wood (no particleboard crap) "L" shaped desk for $300 used. In the front of the store, the same desk was well over $600 new. A lot of business will lease furniture and when the lease is up it has to go somewhere.

Just ask to see the previously used/leased stuff.

Good luck.

If you have the skill and tools making your own is probably the best way to go ideally speaking but as far as retail goes the best place I have found with the best choice of selection in my area over the years is Office Depot. They have a wide range of prices depending on how fancy or high quality you want to get.

thats a pretty cool one thats relatively cheap that i was looking at. free shipping to walmart. and i know you have a walmart within 10 mins. :D

I have glass. It's annoying to keep clean, no drawers, and you really have to try if you want to hide wires. I got two coat hooks, zip tied them to the metal mesh in back, and looped my wires around them. Looks great, but now that my monitor is mounted on teh wall, you can still see them if you look down while standing up.

I ordered mine from staples.com. They had the best price for the one I picked out. If there was an Ikea nearby I probably would have bought from them. If I had a pickup truck I might have waited for an Ikea jerker to pop up on craigslist.

What model of desk is that? Same for the monitor stand?

I personally recommend Ikea. You can mix and match the tops and the legs. Let's face it, almost any desk you buy these days is going to be particleboard unless you spend $$$$ for hardwoods, or buy a glass desk.

You want to build something really custom check out Table Legs Online. They have everything you need to build a desk almost any way you want. Prices aren't too bad if you're careful, but you can easily spend a couple thousand dollars if you're not.

Honestly, the trip to Ikea would be worth it. Try to plan the trip when you need something besides just the desk.

You don't have to buy their pre-fabbed desks either. They have all different kinds of table tops and you can mix and match different legs and all sorts of other different options.

I actually stopped at an Ikea in NJ on my way back home from a work assignment.

I picked up a kitchen table and some chairs, but spent some time looking at the desks there too.

Holy crap. They're awesome. We have some friends that live in Danbury and love Ikea.. so in the summer we'll be visiting and taking a trip to Ikea and putting something together.

I'm not putting a plywood desk in my office. If I were to build my own, I'd use hardwood or veneered MDF. But I don't want to pay lumber yard prices for hardwood, I don't want to finish the wood myself, and I don't want to deal with veneer.

Thanks though :)

Really wouldn't be cheaper, especially after you factor in the labor involved in it. I saw some nice, large tabletop+adjustable leg combinations at Ikea for under $80.
