A theft of a portable media device that contained personal information on some 3.3 million people with student loans has a non-profit and the Gov't jumping. Educational Credit Management Corp. is a contactor for the Dept. of Education.

ECMC said it has arranged with credit protection agency Experian to provide affected borrowers with free credit monitoring and protection services. Borrowers will be receiving letters from ECMC soon on how to sign up, gain access to fraud resolution representatives, and be provided with identity theft insurance coverage.

Great FUCK ME! I cannot wait to get the email.

Hey I have a work issued laptop too guys! It has all sorts of information on layouts, personal response to accidents, and other sensitivity material! I'm just going to leave it outside unattended!

Why is this still happening? How much more clueless can these people be?

Gee, sure am glad that all our personal information is safe in the hands of the gov't and their contractors... oh wait... nevermind

one more ray of joy in my miserable world of broke college student without a single loan :p

The next bill Sallie Mae sends me, I'm going to reply saying I paid the whole thing off last quarter and my balance must have become corrupted due to this privacy failure.

Fingers crossed.

How do they know it was stolen and not misplaced/lost?

why do they own laptops! why cant they have a mandatory desktop law

Who said it was a laptop?

Here is a quote from the article:

"The data was on "portable media" that was stolen sometime last weekend, ECMC said in a statement. "

It might have been a flash drive or external hard drive for all we know.

Unless it was a backup media, there is no reason this amount/type of data should reside on a portable storage media!

Is there some ridiculous fine that companies get hit with for pulling stuff like this? Some deterrent? Because it keeps happening, like they really aren't that concerned with what happens, if it doesn't affect the bottom line. It's not like the people with loans can take their business elsewhere, right? I don't understand how any information of that sensitivity can ever be put on "portable media". I would love to hear the rationale for that.

Wait, I just thought back and realize it's a company not the fed's themselves..
but the concept's the same. You're info is never safe and secure.

This past weekend I just filled out some paper work for my 14 year old to start taking drivers ed in school. Him driving is scary enough but the paperwork asked for his SSN.. why???????????????????? That should be the most sacred number any American has and used for only one thing!!

In related news, Experian stock price just went up by 15% because of a new security breach.

Can't wait for Nationalized Healthcare, where all we have is trusted to those who know best. Imagine the fun you're gonna have when your medical records are sold to the spammer, my god, its gonna be targeted viagra ads for everyone....

Bbbuut...private companies are so much more efficient and better than the gub'ment!!1 My grandpappy told me so.

Lol @ the people twisting this in to a way to rant about the government.

No......I came out that way, but it was not really a anti-Government rant, it's a privacy rant. The government AND companies all suck. They want to know how many freckles are on your left nut for no good reason, and try to sit there and claim your info is safe. It's only safe if I keep it private.

And NO.....I'm not telling you. :D

yeah exactly, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 sets guidelines for sensitive information like this. The while the act doesn't make you adhere to all it's suggestions, you must at least have a plan (risk assessment, contingency, etc) and you must show that you follow through with said plan for face fines and imprisonment.
If shit had hit the fan with a medical billing office losing a PDA, they would stop using PDA's, because if the same shit happened again, they risk being shut down by the government.

Why dont we have a law for all handlers of sensitive personal information, like HIPAA?

Your SSN# has been stolen 50 to100 times already. At this point, it should be more a matter of needing much more than a SSN# and a little bit of other info to DO anything with it. Will it make getting credit cards, mortgages, etc. more difficullt and inconvenient? Yes, but at this point that's really the road we should be going down. The only comfort you can take in the fact that your SSN# has been stolen by now, is that pretty much everyone has had it stolen. So now its like winning a shitty lottery (with much better odds then the lottery unfortunately).
