Where do you see this team going?

This is not a thread for anyone to harp on the past...There will be no mention of old members and n00bs, we are all here for the same reason and when you got here has nothing to do with it. We all need to carry on for the cure, whether you F@H, UD, or both. :)

Now, a lot has been said lately, good and bad, about the team's direction. So, here is your chance to sound off. Where would you like to see this team going? We are all responsible for this team and where it is going...

Speak now or forever hold your peace.

I guess my feeling is that it should be free form. What happens happens. I like the active recruitment. I like the contests and badges ;) etc.

Sure, there is some learning curve with integrating new members, but we seem to attract pretty responsible new people that work well with the group.

I also think that the competitiveness is something that is strongest in the first 6 months of serious folding and then starts to wane. I think we are currently seeing a pretty large percentage of our active (posting) members falling into the first 6 month category and therefore the current tone is more competitive. This competitiveness is also exacerbated by the closeness of the competition with OCAU.

I don't see it as a problem. One thing that I have seen in all social groups is that they are like a pendulum. Always on the move and swinging back and forth from one extreme to the other.

I think Hito pretty well summed up how I feel as well. Forward, onward, and tally ho! :D

I thought it was going pretty good.

The only thing that really bothered me was after we passed OCAU, our production seemed to drop.

I don't know about the rest of the team but I see myself folding... and folding... and folding some more.
If people try to make it fun by being competative or by having contests... I'll be folding.
If people suddenly stop posting on this board and being competative with other teams sort of quiets down... I'll be folding.

Isn't that the point? Have fun if and when it's there to be had.... but folding for the cure is the main purpose. All other aspects should be second.

I can see people getting frustrated and feeling like they keep getting left behind as they can't afford new hardware or their bills go up too high in the summer.... and even then I say just scale back till you can afford to do more... but getting upset because people with bigger farms are passing you.... who cares? It's not a game. The points keep it fun.

You want to know why I fold? I fold for my childrens lives.
They don't have cancer now but at some point in their lives cancer will touch them. Either they will get sick or someone close to them might get sick.... and I want to say I at least did something to try and make a difference before that happens.... hell maybe it'll never happen because of what we're doing here.

^^^^^^Beautiful^^^^^^

I have nothing to add to that. My sentiments (albeit spoken better than I could have) exactly.

Titles of threads that are accurate:
"Where do you see this team going?"
is far from
"Where would you like to see this team going"

I see this team going through it's never ending cycles of people coming in getting addicted or getting out. Those that get addicted often stop posting or even lurking as they move on with life.

I would like to see:
Announcements that "stickies" are going to change.
Searchable archives
More active recruitment of females, and less 15yr old male locker room talk
Focus on getting the most fold per cycle

I fold for my children, it's too late for my father and probably for myself.

Until this thread I haven't heard a lot of talk about the direction of the team, so I'm just going to assume we're going to stay the course and fold on as always.

qft.

that says it at least as well as i could... and it works for me.

i personally would keep folding for this team regardless of the place we were in, or anything like that. i just think this should remain a fun place to hang out and talk about our b0rging conquests.

my bad moose, gnew is right, i misread it.

I'd like to see this team come together, number 1 or 2 or whatever. I'd like to see us become one big family, like my experience with other teams (sports etc.) I don't know if that'll happen, but with team unity anything is possible

Off-topic, apparently.

I think we'll fold on as always. That's all that I'm interested in.

I am going to keep folding, and for the team that took the time to help me learn, learning what folding was about, learning how to increase production, learn something about Linux, actually got me to overclock my boxen, has lent me parts, and come up with some sort of answer for every question I have come up with, team 33.

It's also about the people who when Dad was diagnosed with cancer, helped me with support, understanding, and compasion.

This comes from people who I have never met personally, but who only know me by a nick name and my folding stats. I only know them in the same way but they have become friends, very valued friends because of our combined commitment to find a cure.

The front page pimpage and the contests, and all the friendly bantering are a part of this group, and even though we try to beat each other in points and "goals" when someone is having a problem with equipment or life in general, the friends group around and help.

The best part is we are getting new people involved and they are coming in with energy, ideas, and damn fast boxen to increase the ability of this team to constantly move, be it forward, sideways, or back, we are not stagnant, and it always keeps it interesting.

Besides it's all Relic's fault :D

He is the one who gave me a couple of free CPU's to start the farm, and others have contributed also, so when I had a bunch of spare parts, it was in the trade to other folders section that they were listed, and other team members, FAH and UD both, have found homes for them and are still fighting for us.

The team is growing, in december we did not have 4800 active CPU's folding for us, last i looked we had over 7000.

ALL fighting the same cause, thats a good thing.

The more the merrier, and the more points we have means the more WU that have been done, it is for the science, the rest just keeps us interested, and if the other teams push us , we push back and that just helps the real reason most of us do this,

TO FIND THE CURE,

I sure hope this team is going in a positive direction. We must not look behind at our past, look toward the future for finding cures to common diseases and new ones that stray in the way.

One day soon with each advancement in medicine, a Alzheimer’s cure is not far off and so with other cures for diseases.

As our very struggle in this world with terrorism everywhere, the terrorists will never take folding away from us or anyone matter of fact.

In every aspect, everyone folds for a single team, a team that helps medical doctors find a cure. So no matter which team you fold on, for points or not, we must be strong, fight hard and win for a cure.

I have lately been lurking around here, got new job, full time contractor, and finishing up schooling. I still have not lost touch with folding, a power outage will not keep me from folding or hardware failure. Machines might go down, but the will of getting them back up and folding has not gone down.

Also congrats with all of the new folders, I am trying on my own forums to recruit people to folding at home.

QFT. couldn't have said it any better

If you've ever searched for my name under the stats, you'll see I've folded for Rage3D before. At the time, I just thought it was something to do, and I really didn't care about that the end results were. Matter of fact, I took it off my machine not long after cuz I didn't really see a point in it.

Fast forward a few years.

My girlfriend was talking about how high risk her family is for a particular cancer. I was reading up on it, and the damage and destruction it does to the body, NOT only the cancer itself, but radiation and chemotherepy. Not something I would wish on my worst enemy.

My Best friend was treated for cancer when he was 16, I found out a week later.

Then, I cruse over to my favorite hardware site... and what do I see but a news article about Folding. I remember doing it awhile back, so I looked into it again. And I started folding for the [H]orde cause I felt, not only did I want to help society, but my GF, and a team affiliated with my favorite website.

Then I found all you crazy kooks!!!!

I do enjoy enjoy the stats, I enjoy the banter, I enjoy the deals I see posted, I enjoy when someone hits a mile stone, and every newbie thread. I also enjoy the fact that I'm doing what I can for a greater good. And I enjoy every machine in my farm, every borg I have to check on, and every question I have to answer just so I can get someone else folding for us.

Where do I see us going? I see us regaining then top spot. I see us holding onto it for a damn long time. And I see us, leading the charge to finding cure's for every type of cancer!!!

I don't post much, I mostly lurk around the [H]ard. I started with G@H back in 2001...4 years now I have been doing this.
My farm goes up and down, down when it way to hot or the power bill is to high. Up when it I have spare cash to upgrade some CPUs. Right now it's down for some power supply issue's.
I have seen this TEAM go through some changes, but the most important thing is, it keeps going on with the work.
WE WILL FIND A CURE. We need to enjoy the journey together, have some fun with point races. Keep telling Relic's Mojo story :D and making sure the Moose doesn't go hog wild. And never loose sight that the WU's are more important than the points.

F@H, UD, FAD, pick your battle field and work towards a cure.

I come to [H]ardforums for most of my computer knowledge. I like it here. I read a lot and post a little. When I found out about distributed computing, it was only natural to join the [H]ard team. I choice is UD for the cancer research. As far as direction, well that is simple. A CURE is the only clear choice. Nothing else really matters to me. I take what I can use and discard the rest.

Well said. :D

It's hard to add anything to what has already been said. Pretty much everyone here understands the real reasons for folding, and if we get competitive with the points that just means more work gets produced. I personally enjoy coming to this crazy forum and even getting a laugh after a long day at work. (I dare you to name another forum where you can get hugged by a moose. :D) I think that we have a really great bunch of people here who always seem willing to help each other out and that to me means we're going in the right direction.

There really is only one direction to go...

Full Fold Ahead!

I can only think of one thing to add and that is more of a goal than anything.

I want us to recruit, borg or build our farms up to the point that Stanford has to add and upgrade servers due to the number of WUs we are grabbing and sending back. That is where I want to see this team going. I believe someone mentioned that we have 2k-3k more CPUs now than we did several months ago. That's a hell of a start but I want more. I wish I could do more than I do but I just don't have the resources right now in any capacity. I know others on this team do have the ability to grow even more than they have and I am grateful and glad for that.

I'm never mad about getting passed by someone or even blown away as far as points go. There is no reason to since they are getting the work done that I'm also doing. I want more and plan on getting more at a later time. I will do all I can and I hope everyone else is doing the same. It's obvious that many people are doing all they can whether it's one system or a couple hundred.

Let's keep everything going and force Stanford to make the project bigger with the hope it makes it better.

I'm relatively new (3500 points and counting), but I love this team, I cant wait until I can order a badge (hopefully in a few weeks!)

I hope this team doesnt die!

For me it's all about the data that Dr. Pande's group receives. I only fold for team 33 because that's where I learned about it (Genome@Home actually and then to F@H). :)

I think we are headed back in the direction of #1. I don't see any reason why we couldn't reclaim the top spot. Since everyone seems to understand that the stats and team ranking are secondary I think we are headed in the right direction, back to the top spot.

Failing that I say we all go to Hooters! That's a good direction to go in isn't it? :)

Hooters is never bad... I second the motion! lol

I think recently we've been kinda wandering around a bit... but we're turning things in the right direction... The fight with the Aussies will continue, but we will remain strong as long as we have members that are supportive of each other

Keep on Folding!! For the [H]orde!!

I will continue to do what I do, until for whatever reason, I cannot do it any longer.

Although it was not always the case, I probably fall under the aforementioned category of those who have been around awhile that no longer post as much as I once did. I still put out as many, if not more units than I ever have. I just no longer feel the need or desire to discuss or debate the minute details of the process or what it means.

Hopefully, the team will find its way back to the top and keep it. But this will only be achieved by adding more long term members. Those who do this for years, not just days or weeks. I have no idea how you attract those kinds of folks in great numbers, but the sudden increase in membership to take the lead, only to achieve it and lose the majority of them when it happens (and the lead along with them), is not working.

I suppose there needs to be something more for them to hang around for than taking the lead. The hard part will be figuring out exactly what that could be.

Now this is what I want to hear.

The direction is plain and simple. We keep growing and moving forward. Each one of us has a responsibilty to make this team progress and grow and I for one am certainly going to do my part to affect change. But so can you! There is no leader here anymore, we are a team of leaders. All for one cure, determined, focused, and half sloshed on Mojo! :)

Now, get back to work!

Where do I see the team going? To the darkened skies once more, and ever onward!

But seriously: One immediate good result of the F@H project: It got me to quit smoking for a good year, and now I'm down to one, maybe two monkeysticks a day. What got me to quit? Saving the money I'd normally spend on cigarettes to buy faster/quieter/lower-power processors to fold for the [H]orde! It's not just a research program, it's a support group!

Awesome pic. I like the way the team is coming together, especially with the "threat" from OCAU. I see us continuing to fold and borg and fold some more... so I basically just second what everyone else said :D

After a long time inactive period, I am putting up 2 machines to fold again for the [H]. One is folding 24/7. The other is my video editing, so it will be on when I'm not using it.

Full speed ahead guys.....

Nice

yeah, My two home pc's run non stop and my work machine runs when I'm there. I jus wish I could leave it on for the weekend sometimes. that would probably double it's production, since i can only go at it for 8-10 hrs at a time.

I see this team continuing to FOLD ON! As it has done for at least 5 years (no , I didn't do any research here) , but I do wish we could attract and involve more women and older geeks (older non-geeks just won't happen !) to widen our team horizons. I do enjoy the "young guy/Charlie Sheen/locker-room" discussions, but I also figure that any woman checking us out will skip us after one trip through any thread with the cameltoe pic & comments/observations. So I really figure that we/you/us/mods have to decide if it's a "young male" oriented forum, or a universal forum , and act accordingly.

Please note that this commentary is not a plea for change, only an observation about who might or might not be attracted to join the [H]orde in the future.

From day one I have folded for the “cure”, that and that alone has been enough motivation.

Lost my Mother in law to cancer and almost stopped folding, but she was but one person, there are many more. Now my father has cancer, more motivation all based on my original thoughts, try to find the cure.

Can I afford to fold? No, I really can’t but somehow we keep it together here because it’s what “I” can do.

I guess it helps one from feeling so helpless or however you might want to phrase or re-phrase that thought.

I'd like to see the folding project (not just [H], but I think we have the ability to make it happen in some capacity) get major news coverage/story, for example headlines in a big news rag, or a TV spot on the evening news. That would get LOTS of people folding I'm sure, even someone who wouldn't touch their family PC with a ten foot pole might do it. Has anything like this every been done?

As for me, I only read these forum's for computer knowledge or gaming, and I havn't personally been affected by cancer yet, but I fold my measly 2ghz's (and 2 other lesser pc's sometimes) ass off for all of you who's posts I've read in the distributed forum. Onward!
