Where are the Notebook/Tablet hybrids?

I could use a tablet computer on occasion. But not often enough to justify the purchase. Plus, I would have to keep it synced with my notebook.

What I really need is a notebook computer with a display that pops out to become a tablet. So where are they?

There are Plenty, they dont have "pop" out screens, they swivel. Hp, Dell, Lenovo all have them, many on the business level

One of the advantages of a tablet is the light weight. These convertible laptops loose that advantage. Imagine passing around a 2kg tablet to show others something.

I wanted virtually the same thing recently. I ended up choosing a Samsung Series 7 Slate and purchased a bluetooth Logitech keyboard (its case doubles as a stand for the tablet) and mouse for more intensive usage. I keep it all in a small Case Logic messenger bag. It's not ideal; the Slate's heavy for a tablet and it's a slippery piece of hardware (smooth metal back), but since I needed something right now I've been happy with my choice so far.

After playing around with Win8 today, I can see this being a bigger deal in the future. I'd buy one.

no need to roll eyes, i was just informing you that the product your looking for is not on the market......and HP's offerings are ~1.8 Kgs, which to me is not too heavy but to each their own

I think i've seen quite a few of those windows dockable laptops (Asus Transformer was not the first to do it). I can't remember them right now tho.

let me rephrase, no mainstream product at that level that i know of, however with the coming of windows 8, chances are products will start to come out.

Here's a couple

Lenovo U1. The Core2Duo is in the dock, and switches to ARM when you separate. The files are synced between the two. This is two years old.

Acer W500. Closing it is kinda clunky since you have to separate every time you want to close it. It's more like a portable dock than a removable keyboard.

Hopefully, we'll get more tablets like these when windows 8 comes out.

No offense intended. Tablets are going to get passed around, that is one of their advantages. But things that get passed around also get dropped. A heavy or bulky tablet is more likely to slip out of someones hand.

I think that designs may change when enough $500 tablets hit the floor and die. It would be nice if these things could survive a 1m+ drop.

That U1 is exactly what I had in mind. Now if they can just get the price down.

Maybe the best thing about Win8 is all of the innovative new products running Win8 that manufacturers will throw at the market. Well, I hope there will be innovative new products.

If the U1 is ARM when you separate, does Win7 no longer work or go into standby or something while a proprietary Lenovo OS takes over? I assume Win8 will resolve that since it's supposed to support ARM, correct?

The U1 looks perfect, except I'd need it to run Windows in slate-mode for taking notes in OneNote and things like that.
