Where are the Conroes?

Ok it has been almost a month since the official launch of Conroe. Then there was a date at 24th July, which passed quitly. Then comes the date 8/7/06, and here we are today again. I don;t see E6600 available any where for $316 or even available for reasonable price at all.

Even though some retailers are saying available, but there shipping dates are now 8/14/06. My thoughts are if things will be like that for another month or so, then AMD's price cut will hurt INTEL where it matters. The most interesting thing is the Motherboards, which are so expensive that most of the users cannot even afford them On the other hand i see AMD available all over the place with nice Motherboards with more features, that CONROE's motherboards will provide.

AMD has a very good chance here killing CONROE's performance advantage with nice low prices with availability.

The cheapest CONROE computer i was trying to build is

E6300 + MSI motherboard = $400

VS

AMD X2 4000 + MSI Motherboard 570 SLI = $335

When i overclock both of them i see 4000@3ghz vs E6300@3ghz(the most). I don;t have any performace comparison or any benchmarks to see which will be faster. So please help me out here who owns these two CPUs, which way should i go.

My also concern is Quad Core CPUs, i want to make sure my Motherboards will support K8L or Kentfield.

Well, I really wanted to go Conroe, but, I still went AM2 for several reasons..

- lack of availability of conroe's in general

- over-hype, which drove up prices of the conroe

- lack of good motherboards, especially any with support for sli or 500 series chip for conroe

- most current conroe mobos are still shaky and touchy on what they accept in terms of memory and processors. You really have to pay attention to revisions and other limiting factors. The new ones that are coming out right now are nearly impossible to find, and if you do, they are expensive because the companies know people will do anything to buy them.

- amd's price drops are very enticing - i picked up an x2 5000+ for $300, hopefully it will be a decent overclocker and be close to the fx62 in performance. From benchmarks, it nears the fx-62 running at stock speeds. Only marginally a few percentage points off.

- am2 has a wide selection of motherboards with plenty of reviews so you know which ram to use, etc..

- am2 has future compadibility for am3 processors. Am2's will work in AM3 motherboards, minus the DDR3. DDR2 will be supported in DDR3 mobo's as well.

- am2 fully supports the 500 series chipsets, sli, raid, etc..

These were the reasons I still went am2, since I am on a time budget of when I needed my stuff by. I would definetly still go Conroe if I were to wait longer. Everyone knows conroe beats the AMD's chips in most senarios, if not all. But, it was a very disappointing launch for Intel, because of the lack of mobo's, lack of availability, and price drive-ups.
 
Well if i was only concern about FX60's performance then, i might stay with my D805@4ghz. which gives me FX60's performance for fraction of the FX's Price.

I was thinking upgrading to the platform which will be good for future Quad Core Cpus.

There is MSI 975X Platinum Motherboard is out. Which is according to users excellent motherboard for overclocking, but cost $190. Does any one know this motherboard will support Quad Core.

Or

AM2 motherboard will Suport Quad Core, and Which one?

I can't predict the future, I was just going off of amd press releases and their flow chart stuff for future pathways. Look on AMD's website if you need more info. Start calling up mobo manufacturers as well and try to get them to leak some info for us. ;)

DDR3... none, but K8L can take DDR2 or DDR3. As such, It iwll work with AM2 and DDR2 or AM3 and DDR3
 
So all the AM2 motherboards will suppost K8L with DDR2. What about INTEL? Kentfield Motherboards?
 
According to Intel all that support Conroe will support Kentsfield. Maybe not all the 975X motherboards but all that have the P965 chipset will.
 
Do you know which ones have 965 chipset? So 965 chipset is better than 975?
 
I hear what you're saying annaconda, and I second it. I've been stalling 2 coworkers that want me to build systems for them for weeks telling them 'Conroe on July 24th', then 'Conroe on August 7', now I'm starting to look like an ass. I might just change the gameplan on both and get them 4600+'s.

I've been building AMD's mostly for the last couple of years and have been excited about Conroe, but man o man, the Intel motherboard prices are a killer for anything decent! With the AMD price cuts I can still build great systems for people at a better price, and with a known quantity that is plentiful. This semi-paper launch stuff is annoying!
 
OP, give it a rest. I remember the X2 launch a year ago, and it was much more painful. I paid $625 for a processor that's $249 now, and waited weeks for an order that said "In Stock" when I clicked it and was suddenly out of stock when I got my order confirmation. Why are you making such a big deal out of this, unless you feel some need to downplay Conroe?

Man , lol, dont worry everywhere you go its the same thing.

I got mine on thursday night from my local retailer and i now have it in front of me doing nothing. I am happy that i have it but i should have waited for at least another two weeks when they would have been more available and about £30 cheaper .

I bought the 7950XXX on the release day and at the mo its sitting in a box doing nothing.

That said i reckon the sooner i get it made the sooner i can go back to me living properly, everyday i am looking at boards and seeing if its the right one.Man its frustrating

You are right, but now my concern is K8L and Kentfield coming by the end of 2006. So please help me out here, which way should i go (AMD or INTEL).

Which Motherboards will be good for AMD K8L or INTEL Kentfield.

I see AMD X2 AM2 4000+ ($198) + Asus Deluxe or Foxconn 590 SLI Motherboards for $180 = $378

OR

INTEL E6300 ($209) + MSI 975X Platinum Motherboard $200 = $409.

Which will be better in performance + future proof? (k8l or kentfield)
 
It all depends on what you use it for and how much and how long you will use it for.

Take me for example , i am now in this trade cos i am studying MCSA and there are 20 pc in our big family. Just last week i made E6300 for my nephew and this week or next week i will be making mine.

The power of the E6300 alone will blow you away , so it does matter what you are buying for , i have given a reason why i buy what i buy but i can keep up with it.The conroe you buy today is fast and it will still let you use a4 core later and expect long support for Nvidia products , so its all good.

The point here i am trying to make is that i see a lot of pc's and day by day the clients increase, even if i buy a CPU now i will be able to sell my cpu to someone i meet. If you have the budget where you will spend all you can afford and then sell it on then i would like to try everything, just for experiance and i know that it wont cost me much because i can find i buyer for it. So the if this was a question for me then the probabilaty is that i will purchase both.

But that said even if you get the conroe now , i can promise you even if amd and ati bought a bling thing out then nvidia and intel will match it , that is a promise , if mnot better it.

This is computers and competition for you. So dont worry , if you buy a connroe now , you know that in the future you can still put a quad cpu in it. To tell you the truth that is enough at a time like this.

Also the conroe is a true dual dore and i have experianced its power it is brilliant and that was only a E6300 , i cant imagine what the E6600 i have will be like.

Its nearly doubles the multitasking perforamnce of a X2 which isnt a true dual core. The conroe is amazing . I have seen it and felt its power , its bling bling thing.

Ok you got me there when you said the POWER of E6300. But do you know which motherboards will support Kentfield (Quad Core)?

I was looking at MSI 975X PLatinum $198. It is an excellent motherboard for overclocking, and i want to suck every ounce of mhz from any processor. Overclock the hell out of them, i have $300 water cooling setup, so cooling will not be a problem.

I want the best Motherboard which can overclock like hell. And i want to save some money too :)

So please let me know?

I ended up buying E6300 $209 shipped + MSI 975X PLatinum $197 shipped = $406 total. :mad:
