When Patents Attack Android

Apple and ms are scared. Android is crushing wp7. And its closing in on iphone. The only real viable option is to try and knock the feet out from under it.

Closing would imply that it has a smaller marketshare. Android phones overtook iPhone some time ago.

I've seen enough of the story with MS trying to break into the mobile market to see that they won't do that well. They had a small degree of success in getting Windows CE into things like barcode scanners, but they have a long history of trying to (unsuccessfully) break into the mobile segment and I don't see that changing given current competition.

Barcode scanners, gps, car stereo headunits, digital cameras, refrigerators, webtvs, universal remotes and more. It's not just a phone OS and is very customizable. They don't need to be top dog in the phone market they are making bank off wince as it is.

Yeah, Android has been on top for some time now.

That completely depends on how you twist the numbers

Are you comparing (operating systems) iOS to Android? A single phone vs a single phone? Mobile devices vs mobile devices? Currently activated ios phones vs android phones? Total number of sold ios phones vs android phones?

If you're talking about the OS market share, iOS still has a healthy lead on Android... If you're only talking about total activated phones (excluding e-readers, tablets, webtv devices and mp3 players) then yes, you are correct... but it's not really an accurate representation of total market share nor user base. That's not to say that it's not impressive, but it's also not realistic.

according to techcrunch, the total number of Android devices (as of July 2011) sold is around 130 million

Just a month earlier, techcrunch also reported that over 200 million iOS devices have been sold since launch.

Just some food for thought.

Yes,

I was talking about current sales, not total devices in the market. Thank you for making that distinction. I never even considered thinking about market saturation.

Yes, I guess I better indication is how many of the xxx millions are still active today, on either side. Total units sold is a good indication for manufacturing. Units still active indicates many things.. good design, customer satisfaction, made something too good (ie: customer not upgrading fast enough  lowering expected profits )...etc... and new activations shows current trend.
