Whats wrong with SATA?

I was wondering why everyone keeps saying that SATA and SATA II can never be used to their full potential.
 
Because the maximum sustained throughput of any harddrive on the market is far smaller than the maximum bandwidth of SATA 1.5 and 3.0. That and features like NCQ on SATAII aren't really useful for standard desktop configurations.

Thats the long and the short of it. It isn't a bad thing, it just isn't as amazing as people make it out to be. Same situation with PCIe, tons and tons of bandwidth, but there is nothing that can saturate it.

There is just quite a bit of room to grow.
 
As the above guy said, it's not much of a performance gain, but definetly buy SATA when getting a new HDD, it's the new interface, and the smaller cables are much much much easier to hide!
 
Ok.. that makes sense. Now, is it worthwhile to get a Sata II HD??? or would a SATA I be just as fast.

Is there a SIGNIFICANT difference between the 8MB and 16MB buffers?

it's worthwhile to get the sataII drive, because it will probably be the same price (or cheaper). the features may not matter too much, but you dont pay extra for them, so i'd say get sataII.
 
There won't be a significant difference over 8mb of cache...nothing like knocking 30 seconds off your boot time...but the price difference isn't significant either and it doesn't hurt.

They can be used to somewhat to their full potential, if and when solid state drives come out, and SAS is compatible with SATA and SAS controlers can support 127 or 128 physical devices (I don't know exactly and I don't know the theoretical maximum which is alot higher)use them in a huge array and you get alot of bandwidth to tap into.
 
One thing I dont like about my sata drives is when I was messign with ram one day I noticed both of my sata cables werent connected. Turns out while messing with the rams the little L shapped plastic clip on both drives broke off. =/

My drives still work, cable is hanging on the pins, and are still under warranty. I wont rma them untill this summer when I have time though. (If they would even accept a rma for this reason.)

Moral of the story, sata connections arent sturdy. (3 pin fan connectors take more abuse)

And as I go on a cable connector tangent, why do laptop power connections suck so bad? Seems to be the first thing that goes on any laptop for me. (Have to play the old put the cable in the right spot trick or wiggle it till its right.)

i know what you're saying. my friend says once out of every 100 times he boots up his computer the sata cable connecting is dvd burner will fall off, due to just vibration or something. and i know first hand the frustration with power connectors on things like laptps and portable dvd players. i donno why they dont make these things a bit sturdier, considering there's not exactly many stores that sell individual power cords for laptops by themselves.

To clarify this just a touch, SATA drives will run on an SAS HBA but SAS will not run on SATA HBA.
