SHould i RMA? im going to take the computer apart and put it back together.

Um, software readings are useless for the most part. Use a multimeter to measure voltages.

its been accurate for long time, i know for sure. And when these voltages started showing up, the system was acting up, like the keyboard wouldnt work and the cpu and nb fan not working.

gotta link to a multimeter?

It could possibly be even the motherboard going since the motherboard gets its reading from a chip.

Only way to find out is get a multimeter as _Korruption_ said.

You need to check the PSU witht he meter, then if all readings show that the voltages arent what they show in the software/BIOS, then you need to start looking into what is wrong with the motherboard. Check for leaking caps etc.

FYI, a cheap multimeter can be gotten from Radio shack. It will suffice to check the voltages on your PSU/MB without breaking the bank (on a good Fluke for example :p )

i know for sure its my psu, because my freakin key board isnt working anymore. i tried another keyboard and same happened. im using the onboard keyboard :(

the stupid thing is, is that this happened suddenly. and there are no leaking caps!

Have you checked the voltages as suggested? Software monitoring (thats both bios and windows) is crap and needs to be checked with a multimeter to get true readings.

I would say that its prob the board thats crapping out and not your PSU

It is doubtful your computer would boot with those voltages if they were real, let alone you be able to screen cap a software reading. Check the voltages with a DMM.

well im posting from my spare computer.

The computer with the modstream slowly died. went from 11 volts to 10 then to 9. THen it just shutdown. all this in one day. The computer wont even boot anymore.tried the modstream on my secondary computer, and the same happened. so its the PSU. gonna request a RMA tomorrow.

Should i request it from Monarch Computer (place i bought it from) or from OCZ?

I bought it on September 30 2005.

It read 9 volts while you were looking at a software readout? What other computer did you try it in? Something isn't adding up.

what happened was, i restarted the computer and shit like that. i look at the read out and said 10.38 or something. then it went down to 9 then few seconds later, it shut down. I tried booting up again but the computer just hangs at the systerm start up stage (from the DFI LED shit)

Go grab a $5 (about £4 over here in the UK) multimeter and test those rails from a molex seriously. Usually when PSUs go they just die very very really do whats happening here.

Just seems a little odd to me

going to walmart tonight to get one. I hope its the PSU.....

If it is the PSU, should i RMA it to Monarch Computer or OCZ?

depends if its still under the __ day warentee monarch gives

if not call OCZ and request an RMA, i hear their RMA serivce is great so hope that goes well

I have a feeling that alot of modular PSUs or at least 1st generation ones are going to start dieing in general.

I read an interview from the head guy at PC Power & Cooling and he had some good reasons why they are a horrible way to go when buying a PSU and warned that we will start reading about them going out soon since they have been around a year or so.

awww shit. my multimeter doesnt have a 20. it only has 10. should i get one with a 20 or it wouldnt make a difference?

Can you give me the make/model of the multimeter?

Its the Electro-Tek 10729W Electrical Multi-Meter

Looks like that unit has 10-50-250....you should be able to set it to 50v. I haven't been able to find it's manual though.

when i set it to 10, its perfect. when i set it to 50, its falling apart. This is on the v12.

On 10 you get a reading of 12v? Correct?

so what should i do know?

Well you could swap the multimeter out where you got it or just wait for your RMA. If i were you I would probably be frustrated enough to wait on the RMA.

ok ill wait for the RMA. Im going to sleep now.....

Software or not, those readings (12V dive, 5V spike) is typical of a SMPS with a failing 12V MOSFET. And just like a crossload, the 5V reacts with an overvolt.

Yeah.. software is bunk. But when you see that type of fluctuation, you know something is up. ;)

True....but the number of threads that start with oh noes my PSU 12v is at 10.xx that end in ohhh...so the software was wrong leads me to be a lot more cautious before sending out a unit for RMA and paying shipping/waiting (I'm cheap what can I say) ;)

OK i got my RMA number today, it was pretty fast becuase i filed the RMA yesterday. Did it through OCZ. Sending out the PSU tomorrow through UPS.

Thanks for the much needed help Spectre and everyone else. Thank you very much.
