So here it is, I have an issue. My computer won't start.

The setup receives power, because the components all power up. But I am not getting any signal to my monitor. Also, I don't hear the beep you usually hear when starting a computer.

I have tried two different motherboards and three different GPUs. So I assume there is nothing wrong with them.

Also, I know my SSD is working, since I took it from my last build and it was working perfectly. On top of that, I have tried 2 other SSDs, so my guess is it's not the SSDs.

So that leaves CPU and memory sticks, if I'm not missing anything. How can I check that a cpu isn't burned out? Also, on this motherboard, which of the memory slots is the main one? I want to try out the memory sticks one by one, since I have six 4GB sticks.

Any and all help is highly appreciated.
 
What do you mean by "then reset the CMOS\UEFI"? Will that happen automatically when removing the CMOS battery?
 
it will reset your motherboard's bios back to a factory default configuration. It's a very good way to try to trouble shoot any faulty components this way. Or it just could be that you have a configuration setting that is incorrect within your bios that is preventing you to boot.
 
Tried removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes, nothing.

Tried unplugging the power cord and pressing and holding the power button for 30 seconds, nothing.

I noticed that there is a red light next to the ram, that goes on for a few seconds, but then goes off. this happens right away when I start the computer.

Anyone know what that means?
 
The Asus manual had no information for resolving error codes..:rolleyes:

Based on the manual, your RAM configuration should be like A1, B1, C1. You can start off with A1 + B1.

For testing, take the mobo out of the case and place it on a cardboard surface. Install only the CPU, GPU and 2 sticks of RAM and see if you can proceed further.
 
Thanks, will try when I get home. I had previously put the memory in C2, so that might have been the issue.
 
I have now tried all different combinations with memory, nothing.

I just noticed that I dont here the beep in the beginning when starting the computer. I plugged a small speaker too.
 
is this a new build or was every thing running before and now will not start ?

Also what is your build ? list parts
 
Previously burnt out motherboard, or at least so I thought. So now Ishould have a fully functioning one.

Here is my build:

Intel Core i7 980X Extreme 3.3 GHz
ASUS P6X58D-E Motherboard (see first post for link)
Corsair H50 CPU Cooler
XFX HD5970 3GB Black Edition GPU
24GB (6 x 4GB) 1333MHz DDR3 Memory
128GB OCZ SSD
Siverstone 1200W PSU

Any more parts I need to list?

Also I've had new development. When I unplug the 8pin power on the mobo, all fans go bonanza, including GPU fan. They all go to max! Only CPU fan doesn's start, but when I blow on it, it starts, but goes a little slow. It seems to need a push to start?!?!

Could it be a faulty PSU?

Did you attempt to power on outside the case as suggested earlier?

It's hard to distinguish what the issue is especially with no error beeps. I would walk down to the nearest local computer store and get a PSU for testing. You always have 10-14 days to return it. Unfortunately, CPU return is another story. If you have a friend that can loan you a similar CPU that would be helpful.

Just to confirm you brought a exact same motherboard as the burnt out one?
 
No nearby computer stores, unfortunately. And I don't know anyone with same CPU.

But I ordered a new PSU, to try it out and see.

It's not the exact same motherboard, but it is compatible with the CPU.
 
Could you try starting up the machine with no RAM? This normally generates an error beep.

Just did this and the comuter goes "Beeeeeeep Beep Beep, Beeeeeeep Beep Beep..."

Does that mean the motherboard is functional at least?

ummm... yeah! I was wondering when someone would get around to the PSU, everything else seems to have been ruled out :D
 
I think a lot of beeps means there is something wrong with the CPU. I remember I bent the pins on my CPU once and didn't notice. I received a lot of beeps and it wasn't in the manual what it was. Took a while then I looked at the CPU pins and sure enough a couple of them were bent. You can bend them back into place with a credit card. google the method.
 
tried new PSU, still nothing.

Getting really tired of this now. Was hoping it wouldn't be the CPU but that is the last thing left to change.
 
1 long beep and then 2 short beeps probably means the RAM is faulty.

For the RAM, try a single stick; read your motherboard manual as to the specific spot. I suppose it's possible you have your RAM installed in the wrong slots. You can't just put RAM in any slot(s). Also confirm you don't have TOO LARGE of RAM.

I'd also remove anything absolutely unnecessary:
1) leave one stick of RAM only
2) remove DVD drive
3) remove all non-Windows hard drives
4) Remove sound card or other cards
5) Reseat graphics card
6) Confirm CPU fan and graphics card fans are working
 
You could take CPU out and see if it posts. It won't boot but it should post with an error..
 
Finally figured out what's¨wrong!

Bought a new mobo and cpu. This mobo has onboard graphics and I tried it first with GPU inserted. Still wouldn't boot.
Then tested with the onboard video and VOILA! Must be some issues with drivers I'm guessing since I am 110% sure that my 6990 is working (tested in another comp)

Finally! After spending more than $1k. Now I have 2 high end computers haha
 
It's weird. Whenever I plug in the GPU into any of my setups, everything powers up (including the GPU) and then I hear a short beep. Then it just stays on, but no signal to the monitor.

Anyone have a clue?
 
Have you tried a different GPU or RMA'd that 6990? If you're having the same issue with all your builds with the same GPU, kinda obvious what the source is.

And I just did this again, just to make sure it hasn't died. So the 6990 is definitely working.


And second, I have tested 3 different GPUs. 6990, 5970 and a second 5970.
Tested 2 different power supplies (1200w and 850w).
Tested 4 different HDDs and six different memory sticks.
Tested 3 motherboards (two 1366s and one 1155)

I've updated drivers for all the GPUs using the onboard graphiccs to access computer, but when restarting with GPU inserted, just black. Monitor does not receive signal.
 
Then something is shorting the motherboards to where they can't boot. Have you tried setting up the mobo outside of the case on top of the mobo box and starting it with a screw driver?

that would be the next best thing to try, along with not connecting ANYTHING but psu ram cpu and video card..( and monitor of course )
