What's the difference here between these 2 cards?
Both are PCI Express, both 6800GTs, same memory speeds, same dual DVI outputs

I can't find the difference other than I can get one for $40 less than the other, but that begs the question: What does the more expensive one have that's worth the difference in price?

Both are MSI 6800GT cards. I can't find the difference.
 
The "X" one says it only has 12 pipelines (I'm assuming that one is cheaper).

It says that under the GPU on the right side of the screen near the top.

What's the default? 16 pipelines?

How can it be a "GT" if it doesn't have all 16 pipelines?
 
I thought the default was 12 pipelines.

Either way, the 16 pipelines would be worth it, but then again, I think you can flash your bios from the 12 pipeline one to a 16 pipeline.
 
Default on a GT is 16 pipelines. I think Dell does the same thing with their GTO cards. They run at GT speeds and with GDDR3 memory (hence the GT name I guess), but with only 12 pipes. Maybe it is because they want something to do with cards that don't meet specs with all 16 pipes? Not sure why.

No way I'd flash the bios on one of those things. If you have to flash back, sometimes it doesn't close the right pipes back up and then you're screwed. I'd try Rivatuner to see if the pipes are good. That's assuming that you're dealing with a real GT GPU with crippled pipes.
 
The difference in price is $40 between the $335 GTX and the $375 GT.
I'll pay the difference rather than roll the dice and try and flash a BIOS or wonder if it's going to work or not. If the difference were $100 or more maybe, but I'll pay $40 for peace of mind rather than to expect something to work at specifications that it's not rated for.
 
No flashing the BIOS, since the PCI-Express with only 12 pipelines is a different core- remember NV41? On the bright side, its video processor is in better shape.
