What would you upgrade?

It is the holiday season and traditionally I like to show my system a little bit of love. If you were going to put a little bit of money into this system (around a $500 budget) how would you spend it? Everything but the GPUs and Monitor were bought three years ago. It is predominantly a gaming rig, but is also used for a little bit of everything...encoding, burning, photoshop, video editing, etc...

Motherboard: Asus P8Z68 Deluxe
Processor: i7 2700k @ 4.8GHz
Cooling: Corsair H100 w/ 4 x Push/Pull Gentle Typhoon AP15
Ram: 16gb GSkill Sniper 1866
GPU: 2 x EVGA SSC GTX 970 SLI
SSD: 2 x OCZ Vertex 3 60gb Raid 0
HHD: 1tb 7200rpm Barracuda
Optical: LG Blu Ray Burner
PSU: OCZ ZT 750w modular
Case: Corsair 650D
Keyboard: Logitech G510
Mouse: Logitech Performance MX
Monitor: Asus MX299Q 29" Ultrawide 2560x1080

The only thing I can think of is probably upgrading to a Haswell with a Z97/Z87 chipset, but it feels more like an update rather than an upgrade (especially since your 2700k is clocked so high), though from the recent benchmarks it does seem quite a few games are now more CPU dependent.

It has crossed my mind. I am just not sure the move from 2700k & P8Z68 Deluxe to 4770k & P8Z79 Deluxe is worth $600. I wonder what I could get for the 2700K & P8Z68 Deluxe if I made the move.

I ended up getting 4790k + G1.Sniper Z97. I liked the sniper because it gave just enough of what I need and little of what I don't.

EG. 6 Sata ports (I am unlikely going to need more than 6 Drives), 2 PCI-E slots (not going for more than dual SLI, at least not for single monitor), enough Power phases to do moderate OC (probably going to let it sit at 4.4Ghz and leave it at that), BIOS switch etc.

The only upgrade I would recommend is a better quality SSD. Something like the Crucial MX100 or the Samsung 840 Evo, or 840 Pro. You don't need a CPU + mobk upgrade until at least 2016.

I think is probably what I will end up doing. Although, I do love the performance I get out of my Raid 0 SSDs. I wonder if I would notice the difference from what I have now to something like Crucial MX100($190), Samsung 840 Pro($280), 850 Pro($320) 512GB. Are the Samsungs worth the premium price?

MX100 has 3 year warranty, 840 Pro has 5, and 850 Pro has 10.

Performance wise they are within a hair's breath of each other.

I think it depends on what kind of data you will end up putting on it. I personally don't put any important data on my 512gb (it's only going to be the game data files, saves are either in Cloud or in another ssd), so I went with MX100.

I personally think that the price of 850 Pro over MX100 isn't entirely worth it, because if it breaks, you are going to lose data, but with MX100, when that happens, chances are there are going to be better, larger and cheaper ssd on the market, so I'll go for those instead with the left over money.

PC was fine.
Could've added a little more cash and got a projector.
The Optoma HD131x is great.

Those weren't the fastest SSDs so there's a chance you could notice a difference. IMO, the Samsung are worth the price if you want a longer warranty.

How close is that 1TB drive to filling up? I'd probably go with some more HDD space, but I tend to fill up harddrives quickly. Got two 3TB drive nearly full and I just got a second 3TB drive I need to install into my HTPC. So +1 on a newer, faster, bigger SSD but also consider getting a larger HDD if the 1TB drive is getting close to being full already.

I would also consider getting a new PSU now. 3 years is getting close and I'm not a big fan of OCZ anyway. Especially considering they filed for bankruptcy a year ago.

Maybe a 1440P or 4K display?

What games do you play? Any racing game? Perhaps get a Logitech G27?

How does your desk compare? Plenty of room to hold all your junk without getting too cluttered? Maybe you could get a new desk?

I do not need any more storage. All my media is stored in a 6tb raid enclosure attached to my HTPC. I am thinking a new SSD also. Right now Amazon has 500gb Samsung 840 EVO for $190 that I am tempted to pull the trigger on.

I was also thinking about a new PSU. I am probably going to go with a EVGA Supernova 850w G2.

I just got my Ultrawide monitor which I love so I probably won't be upgrading that this year.

I don't play racing games and my desk is about as big as I have room for right now.

Thanks for all the ideas...I know it is fun to spend other peoples money...lol

Maybe do a custom water cooling loop?
$500 should be enough for a couple 970 blocks, two radiators, reservoir and a water pump. Then when you get ready to upgrade the MB/CPU you could add the CPU in the loop. Then just replace GPU and CPU waterblocks as you replace/upgrade them.

Yes I love spending others money. Haha!

OK. I just ordered the Supernova G2 850w PSU.

Now I am trying to decide if I wan't to go 2 x 256gb SSD in Raid 0 or a single 512ssd. I can get Samsung 840 Evo 250gb drives for $110. Two of those should move along pretty nicely.

Well I just saw that the Samsung Evos are coming with free copies of Far Cry 4, so it forced my hand. I ordered 2 250gb Evos. I already have Far Cry 4, so selling the codes will make them ~$75 each.

How much are you selling them for?

edit
Oh $35. N/M

Yeah...this will do...
