What would you do with this old build?

So, over the course of the past 10 years, a full size tower build I have evolved into the specs below.

EVGA 680i LT Board
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (not OC)
EVGA Geforce GTX 570
8GB RAM (the max)
OCZ Vertex 2 SSD

I haven't done hardly anything to this build in the past 4 years. In 2011, I put a SSD in it, along with an EVGA Geforce GTX 570 GPU.

I play a game maybe every couple years... and the last being Guild Wars 2, Diablo III, Crysis 2, Bioshock Infinite.

The Q6600 is certainly dated.

I've swapped in and out PCIe cards depending on what I'm doing.

I already "built" an Intel NUC for a HTPC... and that thing is definitely faster than this!

So, about the only thing I can come up with for this is to turn it into a storage server. I do have probably 30+ hard drives (25 TB?) sitting around loose with tons of work projects (video editing projects) on them. I swap them in and out of hot swap Icy Docks as needed.

I hardly need a GTX 570 in it for a storage server... especially if I go headless. But, it's questionable whether it is worth taking it out (which involves unhooking the water).

Oh, on the water.. I've been bad. I keep the Swiftech reservoir topped off, but I haven't flushed it since 2011. I know I know. It isn't overclocked and it kept cool so I didn't worry. I also use PrimoChill fluid so it keeps build up to a min.

What do you think? FreeNAS? THAT said, I already have a Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 4 Plus with 8TB in it.. so...

I'd try and find a deal on a Q9550/Q9650, pop that in and you'll still have yourself a halfway decent machine.

EDIT:

My bad. After a little nerd research, I realized the best your board will support is the QX6850. (it only supports 65nm CPU's, so Yorkfield is out....)

Yes, I remembered looking into that wayyy back here.

The board works with 45nm dual core chips but not quads.

You momentarily got my hopes up. =/

internet surfing machine

I have tons of old cell phones for that!

I'm between making a NAS with it, or making it a HTPC but for my bed room. It's a huge case, so I'd leave it in the office on the same floor, and run some shielded CAT5e for HDBase-T... but Roku will lose some love at that point. I only use HTPCs these days for watching my ripped Blu-rays (that I also own).

It's gonna be kind of a power hog for such a simple purpose, although I know some folks don't concern themselves with that very much.

Yeah if I can ever find my clamp meter, I have a line separator I can measure current with. Either way it could sleep or be off when not in use.

Well it only has 6 SATA headers so the most you can stuff in it would be 6 HDDs..... I would probably just give it away or sell it if I needed the money.

Would make a nice little gaming rig for a kid though. Got any younger family members that like to game?

If you want ZFS you should go server board with ecc ram. IMHO. Unless you're just hosting non important video files and the likes.

The money you get from selling it can easily be put into a new FreeNAS rig :D

I have a 2nd SATA card in it with 4x SATA ports. I previously had that set up with 4x drives in RAID5.
