What would be your laptop?

i would get an sff pc.

warning: if anyone claims that a toshiba 1415-s173 is a good gaming laptop, i will laugh them clear to tuscaloosa.

Well if money is no object.. I must say that FragBook has my vote.

Now on the note of price I would say in the 900-1200 range I would hit a gateway m505x or xl or the eMachines m68XX (I have a m6805 I am actually looking to part with).

Sager also makes a great system. I am thinking of actually selling both my laptops as soon as the mobile nvidia 6800 comes out and getting one. But I have to see if I can find a laptop with that card. Anyway atleasta Radeon 9600 that overclocked safely and well (like in the m505 and m68xx models) is where you want to be to game. Really funding is a big factor here.

Sager 9860 would be the machine for me. I would however like to see what the next gen XPS will be all about.

I like the new sager (esp with the 6800go) its just the 17' screen being just to much for me. I am trying to find a laptop at 15.4" or less with the 6800go and I have not had much luck. :D

i don't want to spend enough to buy a "good" gaming laptop since I need a laptop for longer battery life and other uses more often than gaming.

The Dell 8600 laptop I have with a 128MB Mobility 9600 Pro Turbo is pretty decent for gaming and it was really affordable (a little under $900) and gets good battery life. :D

I would probably get the eMachines or a Compal CL56. I forget what the eMachines ones have for vid cards, but the Compal has a Radeon 9700 mobile.

If you have higher budgets, then you might be thinking of a desktop replacement thing (and budget and batter life can go to hell?) If so, look at the new Sager (NP9670 or something...) which comes with an nVidia 6800 mobil with 256 MB RAM, and can last about 1 hour on battery!

A fragbook would be nice though.

Right now I'm looking at IBMs and Twinhead and Compal and debating (though I will probably not get an IBM until I hit the professional world).

For the money I say Emachine M68xx Series. for the dollar you just can't beat it.
I am loving gaming on mine!!

Randy

What makes no sense in all of these upcoming lappies is that theyshould all be Athlon 64 since they are clearly the best fro games. personally, if someone is looking for a sepcific gaming laptop and did not get in on a 9100 or XPS during the 750 off deal I would wait for a high end a64.. That's my two cents...

15" UXGA
Centrino with a x700m (hopefully around the desktop 9800p performance with good battery life...)
Or
A64 with the new ATI mobile card (cant remember name of the top of my head)

I got my Inspiron 9100 and love it... :) Though I think A64 rigs are the way to go for thefuture...

mine would be the Acer Ferrari 3400
which just arrived today ;D
which i'm typing on in bed right now with my wireless connection watching a dvd.
:D
yay
heh

Gaming laptops are a very niche product. I guess they are great if all you plan on doing is going to lans with it. However, if you plan on taking it with you to work or school your pretty much sol. 12lbs+ is not exactly portable. The weight is the big deal, but the sheer size. They are usually 2in thick and will not fit in most bags.

Personally I like the portability of my Compal Cl56. Sure it could be smaller, but it has a big 15in screen, weighs in at just over 6lbs, has 4.5hrs of battery life, 2ghz p-m 1gb ram, and a 128mb 9700. It will play every game out there, although not with all the eye candy. However, I take my laptop with me everywhere. It fits inside my backpack with multiple books.

Now you can wait around for these new gfx cards to be offered in a more portable system, but it isn't going to happen for awhile. The whole reason they are only in the large systems is because they use a lot of power. This translates in to more heat. It would be impossible to cool them in anything but the biggest notebook. Honestly I don't even think these things should be called notebooks for laptops. They run too hot and are too big for your lap, and I don't know of any 2in thick notebooks. They are pretty much a portable desktop w/ a built in screen and an included battery which lasts for a good 20min.

I just got a Sager 4750-V, should be awesome for games. Havenot had time to install any yet though. Its big though, much bigger than I imagined. I dont mind carrying it around, got a nice Targus backpack for it, plenty of room in it for other stuffs.

I looked at cheaper lappies, but decided to get something that would last for a while (and would run games)

I just cant get over how beautiful the screen is....

Your right on the money CyberCRAP but for those (And I must include myself i have a m6805 and would buy a 6800GO if I could find one thats not a 17" screen, just to damn big) who do buy them they are not so much for running on battery a lot of us are used to finding a wall outlet, hell even with my P-M m505x I find a wall outlet 90% of the time. I have a 700watt power inverter in my car for my Car computer that I can also use as well a sa 200watt for when I go with others on trips. We know we have a heavy laptop (That is the one reason I take my m505x and will not go above 15.4") but we want the power. I must say though that the P-M has impressed me and I like the A64 but i will probably stick with a P-M. I was looking at another P4 but without HT it seems and I think I will just stay away from that. But anyway The P-M has shown me that I can have a laptop other then a Powerbook and get 4 hours of use out of it. I am very impressed with it. But the temptation of an A64 is just that hey I have that power, now if I could just get one with a 128MB graphics card I would be happy for awhile longer, lol.

For games, the A64 is king. Period. Though for portability AND playability, the P-Ms (especially Dothans) pack a mighty punch...

I have a Compal CL56 based (Falcon Northwest Fragbook TL) notebook and it seems to do a good job with games, it is thin, light, and has great battery life.

My perfect laptop would never exist :p

An A64 with a Geforce 6800 Go with decent battery life in a sub-notebook form factor ;)

it's possible. check out the capabilities of lithium polymer (lipoly) batteries... it could work if the a64 was one of the lower speed ones, and the 6800 go wasn't too power hungry. keep in mind that you'd get maybe 64mb shared video ram, and probably 512mb total mem, expandable (for an arm and a leg) to 1gb.

i am quite happy with the notebook in my sig: HP zd7000 17" widescreen
but if i could, id either buy one of those sager 17" notebooks, or a FragBook, or a VooDoo lappy.

Chalk a vote up for the compal CL56 i've got one and coudln't be happier with the gaming capabilites battery life and size. Now a DTR gaming laptop would be more powerfull having a better card (9800 havn't seen any other than in dells) But i'm happy with what i got

thanks...

would you guys sugest the new alienware notbook? or HP midea center Laptop?

Mine will hopefully be a Sager based off the new Intel Alviso chipset, whenever they get release. Pentium M with a 533 FSB and PCI-e sounds about perfect for me.

IBM T.... T43p? I'm getting a new laptop this summer I believe, and I suspect there will be some changes with the new intel chipset coming and I want an IBM T.

Well, after some heavy debating, I decided to buy an Asus M6BNe (ordered it a couple days back). It comes with only a 64 MB Radeon 9700 though, but I have heard that the 128 MB version isn't way ahead of it in terms of performance. The main selling point was the battery life and the screen which I have read is much better than the Compal CL56.

You might want to take a look, though my needs are a little different (work first, games second). And yeah, Centrino 2 is coming out in the next few months, so you might want to wait.

Emorphien, hope you're prepared to shell out big bucks, the T42p I wanted from IBM would have cost me over $4000. :D

That's what my current laptop was, and I'm fully prepared to whine and cry to my parents about how badly I need a new laptop for grad school. :D

Does anyone know if the centrino 2 platform will have 64 bitness at all?

I know it sounds silly, but I'd rather have a notebook that would support it incase M$ decide to release 64-bit windows later in the year. I only ever buy a laptop once a year so I would have to do a 2nd upgrade some time through next year if I were to buy a 32bit cpu beforehand :(
