I am planning on buying a UPS for my computer soon. The only thing im confused on, is which one is right for me. When it says its a 540W UPS, does that mean, my power supply in the computer has to be 540 watts or less, for the UPS to power my computer? Can someone explain this. In my computer I have now, I have 300 watt power supply, but most likely going to put a 400 to a 500 watt power supply in it, once I order my 6800 GT.

You can go for like a 500VA, but I wouldn't go any lower. If you're going to really be loading down a 500W+ PSU with like dual CPU, SLI, etc. then I'd go even higher.

Hell, SU1000NETs and SU1400NETs are cheap enough these days.

So would this be a good unit to get then:

My computer has a Pentium 4 520 processor in it. 512MB or ram which im going to add a another gig to soon. Then right now I got an Sapphire X600 Pro which hopefully will become a 6800 GT or Ultra one day also. A Maxtor 200 Gig hard drive. Dont ask me what my motherboard is because its from an HP computer. Its by Asus thats all I know about(Micro ATX form). Then I have 1 DVD Burner and one CD-Rom Drive in it also.

Reason Im buying a UPS, is because, my power went out a week ago, and my hard drive got messed up, and had to get a new one(yes I do have a power surge proctector) So im guessing it was a power surge that knocked it out. Im not letting that happen again, so im getting one of these units.

I HIGHLY advise not touching APC's power brick type UPS units. They do not produce a sine wave. Mine don't even produce 60Hz. I wouldn't consider putting any of my comp stuff on them.

Ok can you please recommend one for me then. I just need something under a 100 dollars, that will give me enough time to power off my computer during a outage or protect againt all those electrical things that can damage a computer, like power surges or those other power related things.

Really what you need to think about is how long do you want it to run when the power's out. A larger unit will keep it running longer. Really all you're looking for is something that can connect to the PC and tell it to shutdown properly in the event of a power failure.

Yep, thats all I want. I really dont need something that will give me an hour or power after the power went out. I just dont want a power outage or something along those lines, to screw something up in my computer again. I know the chances of it happening again, are small, but if it happened once, it can happen again.
