Well a friend of mine owed me some money so instead of paying up, he gave me his PC.

Specs:

P3 1.0Ghz
512mb PC133
32x Burner
GF4 MX440 64mb DDR PCI
40gb HDD
Inegrated SB64
Integrated 3Com 10/100


All suggestions are welcomed. For reference I do plan on installing WinXP Pro +SP1.
 
Not too bad. Backup box...file server...might have a decent LAN box if you can get a better video card in there, depending on what you play.
 
The motherboard does have an AGP slot, but alas I dont have an extra AGP card for it.:(

I was kind of curious if it would play UT2K4 with medium settings at 800x600...


And I don't buy into the whole Folding thing.

actualy i was listening to sience friday on npr and they were talking about als and how theire was posible cure as the result of promising reserch(read: folding) on protines
 
UT2K4 runs fine on this (has a better vid card tho):

AMD Athlon 1.2GHz
256MB PC2100
120GB ATA100
BFG FX5200 256MB (yeah it was a waste for the extra ram)
Sound Blaster Live
blah blah the rest doesnt matter anyways

but yeah i can run ut2k4 at 1024x768 with medium settings
 
Reccently my friend trashed a HP Pavilion with a hammer. I took it from him... It's a 466mhz celeron with 64 MB of ram and a 15 gig hard drive, multiread 42x cd rom... I got a new case/ps for it (22$) and stuck some other hardware in it like a 2 GB hard drive and another along wit ha 10/100 ethernet card and a Aztech sound card. All crap parts I had laying around. I now have Win2K Pro on it and use it for serving MP3's to my home theatre system. It works miraculously well for a 466 processor. It is also is a good backup device.

You got a gig proc there... which should play most games. Most definately will play UT2k3. I have played it on my 566mhz HP before.

I suggest setting it up as a server... if you goto LAN parties do what I do and take your regular machine to play the games and your extra machine just to serve files to others. Makes a good MP3/DivX dump.
 
A dedicated server for lan gaming is actually a nice way to make sure no one takes a performance hit while playing from the console where the game is being served.
 
I already have a Server for LANs. Dual 1700+@2Ghz, 1gb PC3200 DDR, 2x80gb HDD, 3Com Gigabit NIC and an ATi Rage Fury Pro.:)
 
OpenBSD or Linux fileserver or webserver.

Well that's what I'd do. In fact that's what I'm doing with my old machine when I get a P.S unit for it.

Right now I have 1 machine running windows XP 2 machines running OpenBSD. 1 Machine running Gentoo. And I'm not sure what I'm installing on the next one.

Spare machines are a great way to learn linux without going to a dual boot and partition setup. That's what I would do.

A PIII 1Ghz is still good enough for most things.

Fold with it anyway. You may just get proven wrong, its a quest for knowledge, and not an easy or quick quest. The more people that fold with their computers and that don't have your attitude, the more likely Folding might just do some good.

get a better gfx card and use that machine for an actual "gaming" machine, use the PIII box for a dedicated server.

ut2k4 dedicated servers require VERY little CPU muscle.

I already have a good gaming system: P4 3.2C@3.84Ghz, 2x512mb HyperX PC4000, Abit-IC7, Radeon 9800 Pro flashed to 9800XT@440/780....

I already have my RHCE cert so no need to learn linux.

I was thinking maybe a HTPC/Emulator box. Anyone have some good guides for a HTPC?

I bought a 1GHZ Athlon about around when they first came out, just so I can say my computer runs at 1GHZ :)

PS I just started with Red HAt las week on an old 300mhz , I like it so much i am going to put it on a 1ghz with more memory.

merlin, you could use this computer to try out RedHat, and then when you become good at it, maybe go out and try for the RHCE.
 
I wouldn't set it up JUST for folding. Sure, folding is a good idea, but wasting a box like that for JUST folding is pretty stupid if you ask me. Maybe set it up as an HTPC or something, and when it's not being used, then let it fold away. Or, as one person suggested, set it up as a car PC.

Or, do what I did with a spare computer. I set it up as a sort of download computer, and put it on a KVM sharing one of the secondary monitors on my main rig, plus its own keyboard and mouse. Now, if I don't feel like leaving my main rig on all night, or want to work on it, I can still let those 3 650 MB redhat CD ISO's download without interuption. Also doubles as a bit of a DVD player. Plus, I can use it to look at web pages and talk to people and stuff while playing a full screen game on my main rig. Comes in handy.

But, over all, I think you should at least get an idea of what Linux is about. So you should install Red Hat Linux on it, and learn that.
 
Since the Linux joke is getting a bit drawn out now I'll just come in with the fresh suggestion of rebuilding it a bit and using it as a htpc, sure a bit of a waste power-wise but if you down-clock the 1ghz to like 500mhz you can run it passive for sure not a bad deal really.;)
music, dvd etc good addition to the livingroom.
