Ok, here is the deal.....

I am getting married tomorrow and my wife to be gave me $500 to get toys for my computer as a wedding present (lucky me huh!?!?!? ;) ) the only problem is i have no idea what i should buy :confused: first i will list my system specs....

CPU = Athlon XP 1700@ 2.0Ghz
MB = SOYO KT400 dragon plat
RAM = 512 PC3200
Video = GF4 Ti4600
3 hard drives
dvd burner
cd burner
CPU watercooled

OK, i am seriously at a loss on what to do.... i definately want to get a new video card, but i don't know if i should just get like a 9800PRO and then upgrade some other stuff like another 512 RAM, or if i should just go all out on the video card and get one of the new ones that just came out. I am sure my system would bottleneck one of the newest vid cards, but i am thinking if i went that route it would be there for whenever i was able to upgrade the rest of the system. so help me out guys, what would you do in my shoes?!?!?!

yeah you could get a 9800 pro/xt and then get a new motherboard maybe? or a mobile 2400+ and clock it to ~2500mhz atleast, would imagine it would be a good boost for ya

I'd go straight to the x800. Yeah, your CPU will bottleneck it, but it'll still perform awsome, and if you upgrade the CPU and motherboard you won't have a vid card holding you back. Otherwise, 9800 pro, and upgrade CPU and mobo, too.
 
I would wait and pick up a cheap 6800 NP. They will be cheaper then the X800Pro by around $100 or more and they will still be faster then the current generation 9800 pro/xt.

I would upgrade to 1GB of RAM and upgrade your CPU/Mobo to a 2400+ mobile and Abit/Asus/DFI/Gigabyte board.

Try and get ahold of a CC if you can :p.

Chaintech VNF3-250= $92
Saphire 9800pro 128meg 256bit= $209

I wouldn't worry about 1 gig of ram for at least a few months. I have a 512 also, and I am perfectly fine with the 20 second load times and the occasional glitch. To me, it just isn't an upgrade that is necessary just yet.

1800+ pal, soyo dragon+, gf3 ti200, 512mb ram

i'm probalby going to get a x800xt, yea sure its gonna get bottle necked.. but my furture cpu/mobo/ram upgrade won't.

i was thinking at first, less than $200 for a 9800pro but then that card is like what 1 year old already? then you'll have to upgrade to a x800pro or xt in a year or two. might as well dish it out now and enjoy games to the fullest :cool:

oh btw i wouldnt go for a amd xp movile upgrade.. go for the 64, its just faster

512MB->1024MB makes a gigantic difference in gameplay. Doom3 is suppost to need up around 2GB to run everything max and get high frame rates. 1GB is a must for todays games if you want smooth gameplay.
 
I would go with the new CPU - Athlon64 2800+ (approx $175.00)

New Mobo - MSI K8TNeo(VIA) or MSI K8N platimum (NVidia) (Approx $125.00)

New Vid card - 9800Pro if using the K8T Neo or 5900XT if using the K8N (nVidia plays nicer with nVidia)
(Approx $200.00)

Searching online... I found all of this for around $500.00
(It might cost a bit more with shipping)

Then, get the next cool vid card that comes out in 6 months or so ...

Well since the 3000+ is only like 20 bucks more... I would get that. It has more headroom for overclocking.

i would get a 6800 GT or x800 pro, that should leave you with 100 bucks. (if you can get it for msrp)
then sell your ti4600 for a bit. should leave you enough for another stick of 512.

If he went by that logic he should scrap the A64 3000+ for a 3.0C or 3.0E Intel :p hehe.

nVidia is putting the smack down on ATI with each new driver release. The 61.34 release gave a HUGE performance increase and nVidia should be getting ready to release another update thats suppost to be the REAL performance indicator.

I dont know if id call it a smackdown, but it does seem Nvidia gets less credit than they're due.

Well personally I'd spend that money on hookers [last day as a free man and all]....but....the 6800GT is awfully enticing. To bad you couldn't get in on that $300 deal from Best Buy.

Is that why ATi is still kicking Nvidia's ass with Video cards? X800XT won the review in Maximum PC from what i read!

Hey i love MaximumPC and i usually go off what they recommend but did they use the new 61.34 drivers? I think not. Why do you people keep bringing up all these OLD ass reviews and articles that use the OLD beta drivers!!!

Dont you realize the cards are completely different now?

Like one guy said, i really think this is going to be the last splurge for computer stuff that i am going to get in a long time (2+ years) so i want to make it good. what my current thinking right now is to upgrade a lot of stuff... i am thinking about getting an athlon 64 3000, MSI K8N Neo Plat, and another 512 stick of RAM..... only problem is that leaves me with $55 :( i am trying to talk her into letting me spend a little more :) and i think i will be able to get my vid card upgraded to at least a 9800PRO. my ? now is, with the CPU/MOBO/RAM upgrade i am planning will a 9800PRO still be good? or should i try extra hard to try and get an X800 PRO???? i know it kinda sounds like a no brainer (get the x800) but i probably won't be able to, so will a 9800PRO last another 2 years?

BTW, i have had NVIDIA ever since 3dfx went out, so i would like to give ATI a try now :D

Read the LATEST Issue of Maximum PC as in July. You will see that they chose ATI X800XT because Nvidia uses more power consumption. So in both times the X800 Beat nvidia
 
ummm [H] used 61.34 drivers and the x800XT dominated....

even the x800pro was close to the 6800u

goku, they are not crap. they make the best chipset on the market, and their GPUs are high quality

9800pro will prolly be considered budget card in 2 years .. for the money ..i would suggest trying for the X800pro or do the Gateway deal for an XT for $434 ..they wont be shipping out until end of July tho ... but if your not going to be upgrading for 2 years ..go for top of line (or close to it) now then . :)

Dude he only has $500, and that x800pro isnt going to do too good on his 1700+ and 512mb of memory...

Like i said upgrade proc, memory and grab a 9800pro
