What. The. Heck.

haha well said.. yea there is no way in hell I am paying real cash for any type of in-game virtual items or money... I draw the line at spending on tangible hardware and the games themselves.. if you need to spend any $ on gold for your epic-mount or to get a virtual house, you've lost touch with reality

It all depends on your perspective, I suppose. If you make $20 per hour and can buy the Uber-sword of UltraKill for $15, whereas it takes 3 hours of in-game grinding to get it ... well, your marginal cost to grind out the sword instead of buying it is $45. Of course, that assumes there is no value associated with the grinding itself -- depending on what that entails and how tedious or fun it is, the net cost will be slightly different.

In short, time = money isn't just a saying ... it's the truth :)

not to be rude...but where have you been?......Google the chinese girl who has one million dollars(real money) in assests in second life, selling real estate. I was heavy into SL last year and really enjoyed it, spent tons of money buying stuff for my "home" and my toon.
fun stuff, but got old fast....though if your smart programming wise, there is money to be made there, lots of real world companies opening up there now.
Ah, here she is....
anshe chung.....Please google her name. She has been profiled in the business and money news.

Well that's the thing - I have no clue where I've been ;) I'd heard about SL of course but had no idea it had gone this crazy.

You mention addiction, too much free time and too much money.... I don't think all three can exist at the same time, can they?

I know of at least two people who make six-figure salaries and have almost no free time to devote to a game. For them it's far easier to work as often as needed, then purchase whatever they want. For one guy he purchased a Level 60 character on WoW (a few years ago) for about $900.... which was almost nothing for him. The time it would have taken him to level to 60 far exceeded the cost of the character, and he could begin enjoying the game with friends immediately... not 3-4 months (which is easily how long it would have taken him to get there.)

Blurring the lines between addiction and a good cost-benefit analysis is the modern-day forum troll's ammunition.

yesssssssssss.. qft

if you have more money than free time, I think it's perfectly ok to buy a high level char like that so you can save some time and still have a nice char to play with in the few precious moments you can devote to gaming..

I haven’t read all the pages on this topic... (if this has been stated I'm sorry) but from what I hear... I think they are trying to make it a law or something... that if you try to sell "virtual" property.. you will need a real sate license ...

I'll spend money on games for the general admission to play... but anything more (for additional items and such) is a no go for me... there’s to many "real world" items that my "real life avatar" needs... than virtual items.
