Ok, building a new rig and am not really sure how to figure out what size power supply I need. Looking to build a quiet system. Could someone let me know how to figure it out or tell me what size I'll need? Thanks.

AS Rock x58 Extreme Motherboard
Core i7 920
12 GB DDR3 1600
128 GB SSD
Ati 5770
2-4 SATA HDD (Ranging in size from 500gb to 1tb)
Asus Xonar PCIe Soundcard

I was thinking a 650w power supply should be enough, but not sure if less or more would be more appropriate. I might be doing a small bit of overclocking since the mobo and processor should support it so thinking of messing around to get a 100-500mhz boost if that can be done safely as I'd rather have a quieter system. Thanks for any help.

A quality 650W is enough for that setup. I'd suggest the following:

Corsair 650TX
Corsair 650HX (modular)
Antec EarthWatts 650W
Antec TruePower TP-650
Seasonic M12 700W

Thanks! I'm trying to figure out the differences could be and such a large change between prices for the Corsairs? I'm mainly concerned if there's a large difference in quality or the TX is a lot louder than the HX.

650TX $79

650HX $140

Well the 650TX has a rebate whereas the 650HX doesn't. That's

Anyway without factoring in rebates, the 650HX is only $50 CAD mroe than the 650TX. The 650HX is simply just a modular version of the 650TX with probably slightly better components.

Just saw this and was wondering if it might be a better choice since it's the same price range as the HX but 700 watts. I can't see many reviews on it though so I'm unsure as it sounds like the Corsairs are all extremely quiet.

Coolermaster Silent Pro 700W Modular Power Supply

It's a decent PSU line. However, despite being of higher wattage, the Coolermaster Silent Pro 700W actually has LESS power than the Corsair 650TX or 650HX: the Coolermaster 700W only has 50A on the +12V rail where as the 650TX and 650HX offers 52A on the +12V rail. Since a majority of PC hardware draws power from the +12V rail, the 650TX and 650HX are the better choices in that regard since they both provide more amperage.

Thanks, I didn't know this.

Would a 3 year old PSU still be worth buying?
Seasonic S12 Energy Plus 650W EPS12V

This one is $220 off so I'm not sure if that's because it's old or the unit is being fazed out:
Seasonic M12D 850W EPS12V

Sounds like that batch might have high pitch whining issues which could be the cause of the price reduction.

Yeah still worth buying IMO.

As for the Seasonic M12D, the PSU was released last year and has been superseded in Seasonic's high-end line by the X series. I think thats' the cause for the price drops.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'm going to decide between the Corsair 650TX and the Seasonic S12 with the edge going to the 650TX I'm thinking.

I dunno about price but if you seek silence you can take a look at Enermax Pro/Modu82+/Eco80+. Or at Antec TP New 650.
