On my sig rig? I have about $250 to spend on upgrading either my motherboard or my video card.

The video card ( EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti) is about a year old and has some wear and tear from moving a few times, and I realize that it is the cheapest part of my build as well, but the main use for my computer is SW:TOR and I have not really had any lag or performance problems with it since I got it. I have not seen it played on a better video card either...

The motherboard (Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H WB) BIOS is just irksome when trying to OC, but the board itself is only about three months old. I have had a few problems with it when OC'ing at 4.5Ghz as it will boot and reboot a few times when I reset the system (when it is warm), and my dual UEFI BIOS is funky, one does not enter into BIOS any more, and the other has severe mouse issues, worse than the other one did when it went into BIOS.

For the video card, my research shows that the 7850's are the best bang for the buck now, and have been checking out the MSI or the Gigabyte (skeptical about another Gigabyte product though). For the MOBO, I have been looking at the Asus P8Z77-V DELUXE ATX LGA1155. But I don't know what to upgrade so I thought I would post in here.

If your going to get a 7850 then I would get this version.

We don't factor in MIRs around here simply because they are not guaranteed. Also if the OP had the ~$330 to spend on a card NOW and wait months for ~$30 to come back to him I'm sure his budget would be higher than $250.

If you have a $250 budget, usually that's a hard limit and not something that you can gamble on. Therefore, to get that card the OP will have to spend $327, out of a $250 budget and hope the rebate is good, so he'll get $30 back and still be ~$50 over budget.

You also said usually a hard limit. What if it's not?

You know what they say about assumptions right.


I've had customers come to me that gave me a budget and their goals. Once I break out all of the options for them then they can make a choice then. Most of my customers are happy that I gave them those options and they end up with a much stronger motor build in the long run.(Yes, I build car engines)

How about you take the person at their word? I personally have had a few instances where the person asking for help on their part recommendations actually reduced their budget once I asked them some additional questions about their request or gave them some options to review on their own. While that doesn't happen in the majority of the threads I've responded to, the possibility still exists.
