What should I do with my 9800pro?

I have a busted 9800pro. It broke when I dropped it while installing a gpu water block. One of the corners on the gpu chipped. The card still displays but the image is filled with garbage. One line fine, the next garbage, one line fine, the next garbage. I went and bought another 9800pro but this time with 256mb ddr. It was on sale at a local store for $230 instead of $270. But I had to sell my water cooling setup to recover some of the cost. Anyways, what can I do with this card, I'm sure it's not fixable. And if it is, it probably isn't worth it. I thought about just burning it (FIRE FIRE /beavis) but that's kinda boaring. Then I thought about running so much power through it that it would melt or burn up. I'm not very inventive, is there something usefull I could do with it? Normally I wouldn't care about it and just throw it away but dang it, I spent $350 on it probably just under a year ago.

Melt a GI-JOE to it and put it on display in your room. You will be the onyl one....

Perhaps try to fix or RMA it. If neither of those work.....put it in a toaster.

Ha ha ha, I'm still laughing about the toaster.

I don't think you could rma it, it's out of warranty and I've removed the hsf and replaced the stock thermal compound with arctic 3.

I could still attempted to at least fix it, or exchange it at a store where the employees are morons.

Do not RMA that card, that woudl be total bullshit. You broke it modifiying the card, it's not ATI's or anyone else's fault, why shodul that have to pay to repalce it?

Have fun killing the card, don't RMA it.

I RMAd my 9800SE to Sapphire after the back of the core cracked while installing my VGA Silencer Rev. 3.

had the stock cooler and AS5 on it, gave me a brand new one :)

I'm not even thinking of rma'ing it. Remember, I'm hell bent on destroying it or something like that.

Tie it to the back of your car and drag it along the street. like SOMEONE did *cough driverheaven *cough*

given alll the variety of metals, silicons, and so on, i think you should see what happens to it when you leave it in a container full of hydrochloric acid. Will it catch fire out of reaction? will it dissolve into video card soup? will certain parts melt away leaving other parts intact? or perhaps you will create something new, something,.... like the worlds coolest geek project ever - radioactive ooblek!!!

Where do I get acid from? This sounds kinda cool.

Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is kind of boring actually, use oxidising acids like concentrated nitric acid (HNO3) or sulfuric acid (H2SO4) instead. These will vigorously attack all parts of the card (not only the metals) and produce toxic fumes during the process

I agree with jon, use something with strength relative to sulfuric acid =) I can try stealing some from my chem. class and ship it to you :D

yeah yeah thats the ticket!! dunno why i was only thinking of HCl maybe more of just the idea in general. Somebody get this guy a link to Sulfuric Acid for purchase. Oh, and I will want to see some videos :p

Well, yeah, of course there will be video. :D

Sulfuric acid hu? Hmmm, can any ordinary joe just buy this or wouldn't you have to have some kind of liscense or permit? Or at least a paper stating that I won't melt puppies with it?

I'll give you like $10 for it and I'll pay shipping lmk I'll have fun destroying it.

This has got to be one of the best topics i've read all day. Too bad you dont have some sort of spud cannon to fire at it.

That's because it broke when I moved. I could make another one but shooting the card with a potato (or flaming tennis balls) would take some skill and shooting it up close would be kinda dangerous.

I could trade ya something for it. If I could get another broken card with some other part broken I could make a working card.

You would have a hell of a time getting the old gpu off and installing another one. It's unfixable.

Sell it to me for the price of shipping so I can try to fix it. Then I'll turn around and sell it for 160$... :D All in all, I'd like it though, so I can add to my collection of displays.

how about he doesn't sell it to anyone and just blows the shit out of it with explosives and acids and such?

yes, so the next person to ask about buying it

SCOTTY DON'T!!!!!

I know off several Radeon 9800´s waiting for a small piece of hardware like a voltage regulator or something that can be "transplanted" from one card to revive the other. What I love to do to burnt or deceased hardware is to donate it to a local electronics or engineering school so they can have models for real life exhibition of top notch computer hardware in their class. That rocks.

Got a great idea from another web site. "35% sulfuric acid (car battery acid)". there must be enough in there to do some good (read "bad" / "damage")! next stop: google: safe disassembly of an old car battery. jeez this is starting to feel like some anarchist cookbook stuff (oh no! feds!!)

you can buy certain kinds of acids at a hardware store for use in cleaning drains.

i would not recommend burning or mixing with acid though. there is lead used in the solder that you could be exposed to if you burned it, and if you melt it with acid then be kind enough to take the goop to a hazmat disposal facility (usually your local university has one if they have a chemistry department - but you can always just call the fire department or the city and ask them).

my recommendation is take it apart gently and analyze the components. or find a big sledgehammer and have your way with it. i took apart an old harddrive with a sledgehammer.

If I'm not mistaken it's actually a strong base that is in drain cleaners.

you could just rip off all of the pieces and make a keychain with the GPU and a necklace for your girlfriend :)
