Hey guys,
I would appreciate your help in this matter. The new mmo SW The Old Republic has posted its minimum system requirements...

OSWindows XP, Vista/7 CPUAMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4000+ or better · Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 2.0GHz or better

RAMWindows XP: 1.5GB

Windows Vista and Windows 7: 2GB ·

PCs using a built-in graphical chipset, 2GB RAM recommended. VideoATI X1800 or better* · nVidia 7800 or better* · Intel 4100 Integrated Graphics or better*

DVD-ROM8x or better *Minimum of 256MB of on-board RAM and Shader 3.0 or better support.

I havent boughten a computer in a few years and as always the technology has quadrupled since I was last in the market. I dont want to go crazy and spend a ton of money. I would prefer a lap top model and would also not want to venture into the world of building my own. I figured this was the best place to get answers from some knowledgeable people. So, anybody have any suggestions on where I should start my search for my next comp? Oh yeah, and I would really like to be able to purchase something that wasnt already loaded up with a bunch of crap I dont need.

Thanks for your help in advance...

Probably want to mention what else you do with your PC besides games. And what you feel as if your budget might be.

I havent boughten

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

Putting that rip into my sanity aside for the moment, it really depends on your budget and exactly what level of performance you want to get out of the game and what resolution you want the laptop to be. The world of gaming laptops is pretty vast and there are a lot of good options out there at a number of price ranges.

PS: Before people jump on me for being a "grammar Nazi" my reaction to the error is a joke.

hmmm. General hardware might be a better subforum

My advice - build a load out on newegg. think of your budget price Go DDR3 since the bottom dropped out. Go socket 1156 socket 1155 is too expensive imo. get a GTX4/560, GTX570, or go amd 6870 or 6950. Someone can correct me on this but price wise Intel CPU's are better bang for the buck right now but AMD videocard prices are destroying Nvidia.

Alright, well the other stuff is pretty basic, I use my comp for work and school but those are really simple programs like excel and microsoft word, nothing really outrageous. As for price well I would like to stay between 1 to 2 grand. I know the prices have come down a lot and I would like to keep it closer to $1,000, if possible. Oh and my apologies, "I have not purchased...." lol

Alienware's M11x might fit what you are looking laptop wise. It only has an 11" screen but it has a good price on it for it's size and it's get some power behind it. I wouldn't recommend the Core i3 model, but either of the i5 models or the i7 model should work great. If you don't want to get too fancy with configuring them the default set ups for either of those three should be perfectly fine.

Core I3 is basically a highend Core 2 duo level processor on DDR3. OP if you go with anything Core I3 youre gonna be just making minimum spec.

Quick & dirty build that will make you quite happy with most games at 1920x1200 or below, sub-$1k:

Videocard (GTX 460 1GB $117 incl. shipping) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133394

RAM (8GB (2x4GB 1600 DDR3) $60 minus 20 MIR): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220558

Motherboard ((P67 S1155 MSI P67A-G45 B3 open box or similar) $110): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130582R

CPU (Retail box Intel i5 2500K quad-core $220): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072

Power supply: (Corsair 600w Builder Series or similar $70 minus 20 MIR): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028

Hard drive: (Samsung 2TB F4 HD204UI $70 with promo code listed on newegg page): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152245 ***OR*** higher-performance 1.5TB WD Black $80: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136793

SSD: (120gb OCZ Vertex or similar $180 or smaller for 100ish, load OS + mainly-played games/apps on it): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227395

Case: Pick one you like that's well-rated, a cheap but good one is the NZXT Gamma ($42 shipped): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146061

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit: ($100) if you don't have an extra license already: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116986

TOTAL: (With 120gb ssd + 2tb hdd and Windows 7): $969 minus 40 rebates = 929 including all shipping charges in pricing.

You can trim down the cost by lowering the SSD size or even eliminating it if you want, and if you have a Windows 7 license already that also reduces the cost (other options include eliminating the SSD and getting a Radeon 6950 or GTX 570 for the video card). This is a very powerful rig that will serve you well, and highly overclockable if you add a CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ for a heatsink ($30 shipped, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065)! :)

Good since your opening sentenced ripped into mine hehe ;)

But seriously now, we need to know budget, what other operations you'll be using the laptop for, what weight you want, battery life, etc...etc...are all important to know.

But a few good brands to check out.
HP
Asus
Lenovo
Dell/Alienware

All these companies make great gaming laptops. Any of them should offer a performance or gaming system well within your budget capable of running SW:ToR.

Well said, and yeah even a $1k budget on a laptop should be handily capable of running TOR nicely :). Check the GPU of laptops you look at with notebookcheck.net's specs so you know what any given chipset/model actually is, very useful site.

Well like I said before 1 to 2k, laptop, microsoft word 2007, excel, powerpoint (all on a light basis, nothing too complex), but i guess some of the other stuff I didnt include would be a 17" screen, battery life is not essential, and to be honest I dont need to have a stunning picture (even though a great one would be nice) but to be able to actually PLAY the game on a compettitive level and not just get by with the minimum requirements is what I am really interested in, within that price range. I will boost my internet conection above 25 mbps down if i feel its necessary but a comp that will be more than proficient for pvp and other response essential features is key for me.

And I am clearly going to have a lot of info to be researching from. Thanks again for all the help!
