Dumb question, probably.

What's a decent PSU I can get for $40 shipped somewhere online?

I have a Gigabyte 945 mATX board, E4700, 2GB DDR2 800, IDE DVD-RW, IDE HDD and 6600 video card.

I want to be able to upgrade somewhat. Anything decent I can get for $40?

If you're willing to go for the rebate, this PSU is excellent value. If not, the FSP PSU recommended in post #2.

Ever since [H] started doing their hard core PSU reviews I haven't been able to bring myself to recommend a PSU to anybody for any price unless it got the gold [H] stamp of approval. If you care about your computer at all at LEAST check the reviews and buy one that passed. There may not be one for under $40 but then again there may be a good reason for that. And the good thing about upgrading to a quality PSU is that you'll likely be able to move it from build to build for years to come.

Here's a link to their "lowest" end review so far, they have a recomendation in there that's sub $40 but do note poor component selection

i can vouch for the silverstone one danny bui posted up.. its 29.99 plus shipping right now and it worked perfectly when i had one a few months ago, definately recommend it.

The Thermaltake is also based on an outdated ATX spec (1.3), so frankly, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they need it specifically. Which OP doesn't.

I would be hesitant to get anything from the Earthwatts line now that they switch the 500w model from Seasonic to Delta for the manufacturer. I expect the other models will follow suit, and even if you get a Seasonic model now, if it dies you might end up with a Delta for the replacement :p

They don't seem too bad. OklahomaWolf gave it a decent review here: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=110

The EA430D and EA500D are made by Delta, not the EA430\EA500. And Delta aren't so bad, they are pretty successful PSU manufacturers for servers AFAIK, and the three Delta-made PSUs I've owned (non-server models) have been pretty decent.

To my knowledge, Antec is slipping these into retail channels without a notable change on the packaging. So people are buying "The 500w Earthwatts model" that got recommended and ending up with a 500D. If Antec just clearly labeled the new models I would not have a problem with it, then people could pick and choose which one they wanted.

Also I am not necessarily saying Delta is the devil and will be like sticking lit TNT in your case. However given the builder swap and Antec's displayed ability to put out some pretty shitty power supplies in the past, its going to take a while to find out if the new Delta models live up to the rep established by the previous units.

According to OW @ JonnyGURU:

In nearly every way I can think of, this new Delta platform is a worthy and improved successor to the older Earthwatts designs. It's better designed, regulates better, and is more efficient in general than the EA500 we last tested in January of 2007. I've heard a lot of people complaining about the move to Delta, wondering if perhaps Antec was somehow doing them wrong again, perhaps going back to the time when Antec units used to cut some corners. Well, wonder no more - if the EA650 is any indication at all, Antec has in fact improved their offerings again. Run out and get one if you've been eyeing one...

Now try reading what I wrote "If Antec just clearly labeled the new models I would not have a problem with it."

1) They are clearly labeled with a "D" on the retail box, so those of us "in the know" are able to tell what's inside. In the end for most people it doesn't really matter since both are outstanding units.

2) Your previous comments also showed doubt about the Delta platform which was the basis of my response. It may also help others that view this thread down the road.

It appears that you're the one with the off topic reply. If you truly felt that a post was offending then use the report post feature.

Yeah really, I thought this discussion was perfectly relevant to the purchase of a $40 power supply like the OP wanted :D

Since the Antec EarthWatts was mentioned in this thread a couple of times, and I linked to one for $43, the discussion appears to be on topic. If we were discussing a Signature series then it would be off topic. ;)

i would not recommend getting a bad psu b/c thats what i started with and ended up buying a 100$ seasonic one because the bad ones just didn't cut it

He wants a $40 PSU, some good units in that price range have been linked that are not "bad ones"
