Hi guys, i didnt quite know where to post this but what was the processor that brought out the enthusiast in you and started it all.:D For me it was the C2D.
 
celeron 300a

and celeron 366's on the abit bp6 :) dual celerons oc from 366 to 550 stable as a mofo!

that started it all right there
 
Pentium 120 @ 133 was my first overclocking experience, although I would have cranked up my first PC, a 286-12MHz, back in 1990 if the motherboards those days would have let me :D
 
I started hacking and modding from day one, I think it was a Schneider computer 8088 w/512k ram and dual 5.25 floppies when I was over in Germany.
 
Dual tualatins on an MSI 266TD Master LR. oc'ed from 1.4 to 1.7 each. Ah I still remember the day the parts came in and how long it took windows 2000 to format the 120GB hdd, the largest on the market at the time lol.

Commodore 128. Seriously, using Fast Load cartridges. Then when my folks got a 486SX16 from Sam's, I had to get a 486DX66 in it. And so on.

Fun stuff.
 
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ S939. It was such a huge leap from my Pentium-4 2ghz, that I had to continue.
 
8080 on an intel dev board. I remember the instructor saying that in 10 years we would never have to wait at a traffic light with no other traffic because of the intellegence a uProcessor would add. That was 1978, ish. I think about that every time I sit at a red light without another car in sight.

we had 4 push switches representing quater, dime, nickel, penny and 4 leds to represent the same. We had to design and build the extra circuity and interface, and program the cpu to act like a drink machine for the final project. The instruction came by and by pushing the buttons to simulate putting money in a drink machine, the leds had to light up to show the proper amount of change, or insufficent funds etc. based on a 35 cent drink. Short of my wedding and the day my kids where born I do not think I was more pleased in my life than when I got it working about 1 hour before the deadline.
 
Schneider CPC 464. Bought 3" (yes....3" and not 3.5") disk drive for it. 10 diskettes for that cost $80 back then. Harddrives were unheard of.

My IBM compatible PC career started with the 386DX40 from AMD.
 
Intel = P4 520j socket775, i took it from 2.8 to 3.7 on an asus board i still have

AMD = Opteron 144 took that puppy to 2.9 on air with a DFI Ultra-D

Yes, Amstrad was the original name and in Germany (where i lived back at that time) they were sold by Schneider (actually an Audio equipment manufacturer).
 
P3 got the ball rolling but also brought out a hatred in HP and Asus. So I guess what reall inspired it was AMD Barton 2500+ I'm still a huge AMD fan but I didn't want to go AM2 since it pretty much is an upgraded 939. AMD <3
 
Mine is a old 8088 computer (Panasonic brand IIRC but with the same guts as a Tandy).

Well this was the 1st machine I oc'ed. But my 1st machine was a 286. Some of my fond memories include a early CD rom drive, with the cartridge cases. There was a dark period of using HP Pentiums and celerons before the tualatins :p
 
I myself started with a pent 400mhz then i went to a amd duron 1.2 and thats what got the ball rolling for me. When Conroe was being talked about the enthusiast really came out in me and i started foaming at the mouth and THATS when IT all started.
 
First OC was a 486DX2-50 @ 80 MHz. All I had to do with slap on one of those 1 inch square heatsinks that's about as tall as ramsinks are today to keep it cool (it ran without any heatsinks on stock). Didn't use any thermal compound either... That little chip kicked ass in Doom :p The heatsink is still used today to cool the southbridge in my Athlon XP box (rest of the machine was thrown away a long time ago)...
 
I started out on an old AMD K6-2 at 300MHz (i think it was 300, iunno). Then jumped to a cely 1.1 HP (hey, it was free :D ).

The Cely pretty much started it, from there i went to a P4 then to an Opty, not sure what my next will be.
 
P4 northy @ 1.6 which I promptly ramped up to 2.4 which at that time was faster than anything money could buy. I have been an enthusiast much longer but that experience really turned me on to over clocking.
 
first pc p120 2 days later it was a 166mhz lol then along came the celeron 300a which i ran @ 600mhz what a chip then everything was amd until core2 lol now me is in love with intel again
 
You people are talking about super computers compared to this baby.

The Radio Shack TRS-80 had a Z-80 processor running at a blistering 1.77 MHz. I can still remember using the Peek and Poke commands to randomly insert things into the main memory. If it locked up solid or displayed something freaky on the display then it was a success. :D

You haven't lived until you've saved and loaded software using a cassette tape drive.
 
Cassette drive was my main medium on the CPC464. I remember when a program was stuck at loading, you had to rewind and push play again to try to reload at that point. The noise could drive you nuts!
 
The K6-2 reminds me of the king of all mobos I have ever owned with was the ASUS P55T2P4 that I bought for my P120 @ 133. I then upgraded to P166MMX @ 250, K6-2 350 @ 400 and finally a K6-3 450 @ 500 on the same mobo.

That mobo allowed me to upgrade to nearly 5X the speed of the original CPU I put in it, not to mention the lowest CPU it supported was a P75, so its total range was like 6.7X. That's like buying a mobo now that takes say an E4300 @ 1.8GHz and eventually plonking in a 12GHz CPU when they become available :eek: . I don't think a feat like that will ever be repeated again! P55T2P4 may you RIP :D
 
You kids are funny sometimes... Intel 4004 here as part of some homebrew stuff in the early 70s. Then moved on to the Altair which sported the lightning fast 8080 and was part of a Heathkit box. Slow progression up from there, sticking with Intel all the way until 1999 or so when I got an AMD Athlon from someone, but the VIA chipset was (and they still are and always will be) horrible matches for them.
 
My first was a 486SX 25mhz. A Compaq Deskpro..... Ahh I still remember ripping it apart and discovering the wonders of what jumpers could do.... got that little thing up to 33mhz after I put on a cooler.Still have it running an old copy of debian as a file server. It's not connected to the internet, and the 10gig drive still clicks away. (it originally had a 240MB drive) Anybody remember having to load WD's bootsector loader? I needed that thing so that the bios would recognize the drive.
 
IBM PS/1 386sx at a whopping 25 mhz. It was a big deal to scrounge together $100 for a memory upgrade from 2mb to 4mb so I could play Pirates Gold. I was 15 yrs old and this was my second computer, my first being a Commodore 64, changing fuses every week it seemed.
 
the first rig i put together had a 667 mhz Pentium 3 with an inexpensive via board that worked really well and a Geforce 2 MX (talk about the little engine that could!).


From there i moved on to a 2500+ athlon xp, and now back with intel with my C2Q Q6600.

:D started on a 386 sx/16MHz...that's no math co-processor for the newbs, that was a separate 387chip.

Then a Pentium 60 doing a 66mhz jig, then a 133 doing 150, then a 200mmx doing 233, then the 300A doing 450 (later ramped to 504 usign a TEC and an alpha), then a Celeron 333A doing ~550, then a Celeron 800 doing 1064, then an Athlon 1333 doing 1603, then a Barton 2600 doing 2.2, then a Athlon64 3200 doing 2695, then a FX-55 doing 3.1, then an opty 165 doing 2.7, then my E4300 doing 3.2...and soon a Q6600 doing 4billion mhz...
 
For me it was an emachine equipped with a AMD 3200+ :cool: . That was about a year and a half ago.
 
The first computer I had a chance to actually get to play around inside was a gateway with a PII 266mhz. I really didn't start to overclock until I got a duron 900, did the pencil trick and jumped right in. It wasn't long before I had an athlon 1800+.
 
The processor that got me was the barton 2500 on an abit nf7-s. I raised the unlocked multiplier and it even read as a barton 3200. I never ran that processer at stock speeds, from the moment I installed the processer to the motherboard.

I have since run amd 754 processors to my current c2d that will be moving along to a quad within the next month or so.
