Current setup:
proc: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
mobo: MSI K8N Diamond Plus 939 NVIDIA nForce4
ram: corsair xms 2x1gb sdram ddr 400
vid card: evga 8800gtx

I want to upgrade my proc/mobo/ram as it's feeling sluggish on games and os boot times.

Also, I'm running dual monitors: 24"@1920x1200 and a 19"@1024x1280 (sideways).

I'm looking at a e8400 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115037) and the q6600 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017). I'm not sure what specs to focus on for comparison though...

Help appreciated!! :)
 
I think you should get a E8400 and a Asus P5Q Pro or a 780i or 790i Ultra if you want to SLi if you get another 8800 GTX, the games are probably feeling sluggish because of the slow CPU you have. As for the OS boot times, you need to look into a faster HDD.

BUT, if you OC the Quad will get you better performance for now and the future when games support Quads more.
 
How much are you looking to pay? I'd look at an Intel P35 (or P45) motherboard along with the E8400 (or E7200 if you want to save some money) and 4 GB of DDR2-1000 or -1066. You'll notice a big difference. Do you have a recent hard drive - if not, pick up a WD 640GB to go with it.
 
I suggest putting out the extra...what...$20? for the e8500. They overclock like a champ and still run pretty cool. Any of the wolfdale processors clock pretty well actually.
 
Hard to beat a PQ5 Pro + E8500 at that price. Pretty sweet performance at ~$300

Wow, the price delta between the E8400 and the E8500 really came down while I wasn't looking. Wasn't it like $100 a while back?
 
Perfect match but the quad is going to benefit You more later down the road and i know on water it will do around 4.1 are depends...:)

none really i may not OC as far most Q6600 top out at 3.6 or so
and it runs a bit hotter youll need bigger HSF to OC it

imo id get the quad
 
There are also some architectural improvements between the Q6600 and the E8xxx/Q9xxx series, so you get a little more clock for clock performance out of the 45nms.
 
i've been really happy with my wife's rig since i've been using it for the past few weeks

it plays games really well and if i didn't already have a e8400, i would pick up another q9400

i also would like to remind you that the new 45nm chips have sse4 which would improve performance difference of a 65nm chip vs the 45nm chips as time goes by
 
It looks like I'm going with a q6600, the same mobo from above, and 2 gigs of crucial ddr2 1066.

My friend was also pushing for me to go for a q9400, but I just dunno, it's $270 on newegg and I assume I should get a better mobo as well....that would really drive up my total.

Any last opinions before I hit the order button?

edit: actually i think im going to go with 4gigs (2x2gb) of crucial ddr2 800 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145184 $64.00 (after rebate)
 
The P5Q Pro would be a fine mobo with any of those procs, why would you need a better mobo for a Q9400? The Q6600's undeniably the best bang for the buck though... And 4GB is definitely the way to go these days, it makes a really noticeable difference w/Vista 64, in a lot of things. Alt+Tab'ing outta games, Superfetch, multi-tasking, etc.
