What OS for gaming?

I tried doing a search for the preferred OS for gaming, but all I got was Tom's Hardware guides from early 2007. Other posts were saying "Vista : Trouble ahead..."

What do you recommend for the OS for a dedicated gaming machine? I have the option of WinXP 32 / 64 or Vista 32 / 64. They're legal, so I can go to Vista SP1 and XP SP3.

Has Vista finally gotten up to speed? Or is XP still king?
 
if your going to DX10 game then Vista 32/64.. and which one is probably dependent on the amount of memory you are going to have in the machine..


personally if i was building a machine today to game on for the next 2 years.. i'd go vista just due to the longevity and save the hassle of having to upgrade in hte future because more and more DX10 games will be coming out.
 
It's an AMD x2 6000 with 4gigs of ram and an Nvidia GX260.

I just do EQ2 now, but have Assassin's Creed installed was thinking of installing Neverwinter Nights 2. Not a huge FPS guy since Quake 2, but like you said, the future is all DX10.
 
I'd do with a flavor of Vista x64. You might as well at this point since Vista is two years old and is about to be replaced with Windows 7, which will be driver compatible with Vista. XP has been great but now its just getting to old and I think its support is about to really drop off in the consumer area, especially with drivers with Windows 7 coming.
 
Want over 4gb? Vista 64
Want Directx10? Vista whatever
Want the best levels of compatibility? XP32
Play older games? XP32 is more likely to support them
 
I recommend Vista 64 unless you need 32 for compatibility with something. 64 will permit more ram, which will be nice over the life of the system.

Neither does Vista x64.

I've been able to play games from 2000 and onward just fine in x64. 90%+ of apps just work. A few I've had to turn on compatibility mode for though.
