What nVidia card would be equal or better than 6990?

I currently have an HIS 6990 4GB GPU paired with i7 980X (OC'd to 4.1GHz) and 16GB 1600MHz RAM. Both GPU and CPU are being watercooled at the moment.

I want to switch from AMD to nVidia and was wondering what card I should get.

Anyone know what a good upgrade (or substitute) on the nVidia side of GPUs?

I don't game much, but when I do it's mainly 1920x1200 or 2560x1600.

I am going to watercool whatever card I get, which means that fan noise won't be an issue.

I was looking at 680, but most people say that the change is likely a downgrade. But at least no more CF issues.

Appreciate all help.
 
Do you have Budget? Do you want to sli? That's going to determine a lot. Your looking at a Titan for $1000 or a gtx 680 minimum in the single card solution.
 
A single 680 has been plenty for me at 1920x1080...at anything higher I can't say it would be smooth at max settings in all newer games.
 
I wouldn't go anything under a 690 or a titan. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think a titan would be a better choice for the future gaming since it features 6GB?
 
Assuming I can get $350 for my card plus Water Block, the budget would be... I don't know. Not really any budget. But not looking to spend an arm and a leg for a GPU.

So basically, 680, 690 or Titan? Did not know that the 6990 is still so high end.

I may consider dual (SLI), but as mentioned above, not an arm and a leg. So I assume single card would be most convenient.
 
Basically, only the 690 or Titan will net you equivalent performance or higher performance.

If you're looking at two cards, 670 SLI at minimum.
 
Been looking at 7970 for a while, but decided to go back to nVidia. Haven't been there since GTX295.

Really interested in the 690. How much do you guys think one could get a new or used one for?
 
6990 is equivalent to the 590. 7990 is equivalent to the 690/titan.

I used to run dual 6990's in quad xfire. Worked great but the vrams just overheated like crazy and MSI ended up issuing me refunds because they couldnt replace the cards. Went with a single 6970 to get by and recently upgraded to the 680's and love it. The 6970 lightning I have is a great card though, that thing worked great and I didnt miss the 6990's as much as I thought I would.
 
You might get "equivalent" performance out of a 680 or 7970, but that's a side grade at best.

New 690s and Titans hover around the $1000 range. Used 690s... I've seen some as low as upper $700 but most of them around the $800-900 range. Used Titans... very close to new price.
 
A single GTX Titan should fit your need for the resolutions you'll be playing at and you won't have to deal with SLI issues.
 
Based on research I've done. it seems that 2 GTX680 are on par with 1 GTX690, many cases even better.

Will look further into it. Titan seems a bit too much, even though it would be future proof so to say.

The only problem with the 680's or a 690 is possible SLI performance issues in certain games and microstutter. Several people here have gone from 670/680 SLI setups to Titan's and noticed a real improvement in overall smoothness of gameplay.

That smoothness is what I am hoping for.

I have this weird issue, when I play certain games, it is smooth for a while. Then, all of a sudden, it starts lagging/stuttering and eventually gets slower.

I have to exit the game by pressing ALT+Tab and then re-enter it by pressing ALT+Tab again. It is smooth again for a short while, until it starts lagging/stuttering again.

It mostly happens after load screens, but sometimes happen during gameplay (I think when you are closer to certain areas where the game loads new textures, without a load screen)


This is the main reason I am trying to switch to nVidia. Read a lot online about how AMD are fairly known for these issues, but not as much nVidia

micro stuttering is more of a crossfire problem then a single card solution problem.

Any single card 680/7970 should have minimal if any stuttering.
