You know something , i reckon the boards are going to be more freindly about the whole sli and rossfire , i reckon they will all suppport each other , its good for business overall , especially after the merger.

There is nothing physical stopping SLI from working on the 975X Crossfire boards, it's just a driver thing, hence why a few sets of SLI-hacked drivers have shown up over time. With this change, maybe nVidia will make it official at some point

I hope so. My 7950 GX2 needs some compatibility love from Intel.

It pretty much forced a price war on graphics products that eventually paved the way to the high-end standalone 3D solution. Since the "low end - integrated" market became far less profitable than it had been, manufactures had to come up with newer, better products to make a buck, so innovation won out.
Since ATI is already a leader in the high end, I see prices dropping and nVidia loosing market share unless they innovate. This is similar to AMD's X2 Products forcing Intel to ramp up Dual Core. Intel "Innovated" with the Conroe and now we have Low Cost Dual core from Both.

In 1997 there were 4 major players, 3dfx, ATi, nVidia, and real3d. Intel bought chips&tech and matrox. Chips&tech handled notebook video, they were a non-issue... and believe me, notebook graphics REALLY sucked back then on a whole different level than now. Real3d showed some early promise, made the mediocre i740 for intel, and fizzled out.
Really different than 9 years later in 2006. We don't have 4 players in graphics these days, we have 2, nv and ati. And now ati is in bed with amd. I don't see this as likely to be a good thing for the consumer.

Good point, intel is definitely a player for marketshare. But their products have very little relevence to the enthusiast sector. Ultimately I still don't see this as a good thing.

I don't understand the big deal people make about SLI/Crossfire. It's such a tiny market. I don't consider either to be cost effective, with the posible exception of the 7950. That is the only SLI-like solution I would possibly consider, and even that is a little too much money.
How many PC's out there do you think are using SLI/Crossfire? My guess is it's well less than one tenth of one percent. Not exactly a big profit area.
And don't forget that SLI/Crossfire will simply be untenable when the DX10 cards hit and require 200 watts for a single GPU. The idea of SLI/Crossfiring these is ridiculous to me.

yea, i was thinking the same thing... who cares about multi gpu? most people dont, because they are just not practical, and ppl have way better things to spend their money on.
I for one will probably never buy more than a single gfx card to power my computer, and I suspect the vast majority of people, and gamers, feel the same.

The point is all the benefit of upgrading lies in graphics which are not limited by the GPU. So what your saying is only .77% need to upgrade?

I dunno about that. I would say it more like AMD is building a new wall using red ATI bricks, and Conroe is 2 new brake pads, but 2 are still failing and Intel is trying to stop the truck before it smashes into the wall.dad11345 said:

Honestly I do not see why people are getting worked up. ATI will still most likely make Crossfire chipsets for Intel for years to come. They certainly have a good change to excel in the enthusiast market.

As for the ATI and AMD merger, I am a bit discouraged to be honest, the smaller amount of competitors usually end up costing the end-user in the long run. May not be now, but its not too far off. At least ATi and AMD are not the two goliaths merging, Intel and Nvidia. Which Nvidia is threatening thanks to widening its product lines to things like cellphones.

this deal just looks like AMD messed up... their stock price is so much lower than before, they probably weren't expecting such a large drop before they bought ATI, but had to go through with the deal because it was probably in the works for some time.
