What now Intel

Since AMD is buying ATI what will Intel do now with their reliance on Cross Fire for Conroe?

You know something , i reckon the boards are going to be more freindly about the whole sli and rossfire , i reckon they will all suppport each other , its good for business overall , especially after the merger.

Also expect good prices , it will make competition even better.

There is nothing physical stopping SLI from working on the 975X Crossfire boards, it's just a driver thing, hence why a few sets of SLI-hacked drivers have shown up over time. With this change, maybe nVidia will make it official at some point :D!

How exactly does the second largest CPU manufacturor buying the largest GPU manufacturor end up increasing competition?

I hope so. My 7950 GX2 needs some compatibility love from Intel.

LMAO.... their "reliance" on crossfire? Intel doesn't need a dual GPU solution considering 99% of the market uses a single GPU and something like 50+% of those use Intel graphics. This isn't that big of a deal. It will change a few things, mostly the relationship between AMD and nVidia I'm guessing... but a huge impact on Intel? Nah...

Not in the too distant future there will be a war, the holy alliance Amd + Ati , and there rival nemisis the unholy alliance Intel + nVidia, this will be the new war, until Microsoft steps in and starts making Gundam's

teehee :p

Intel at one time bought out one of the big players in graphics in '97;

http://news.com.com/Intel+merger+raises+concerns/2100-1001_3-202385.html

It pretty much forced a price war on graphics products that eventually paved the way to the high-end standalone 3D solution. Since the "low end - integrated" market became far less profitable than it had been, manufactures had to come up with newer, better products to make a buck, so innovation won out.

Since ATI is already a leader in the high end, I see prices dropping and nVidia loosing market share unless they innovate. This is similar to AMD's X2 Products forcing Intel to ramp up Dual Core. Intel "Innovated" with the Conroe and now we have Low Cost Dual core from Both.

it will "break" the stalemate in the graphics arena.

No one has said anything about competition increasing, just that competition would be better. ;)

i should report you for flame baiting. instead, i will point out the fact that intel and nvidia now have a very good reason to come to terms on sli, to the detriment of amd.

In 1997 there were 4 major players, 3dfx, ATi, nVidia, and real3d. Intel bought chips&tech and matrox. Chips&tech handled notebook video, they were a non-issue... and believe me, notebook graphics REALLY sucked back then on a whole different level than now. Real3d showed some early promise, made the mediocre i740 for intel, and fizzled out.

Really different than 9 years later in 2006. We don't have 4 players in graphics these days, we have 2, nv and ati. And now ati is in bed with amd. I don't see this as likely to be a good thing for the consumer.

Actually there are 3 players in the graphics market with intel selling more than both ATI and nVidia combined.

And beyond that.... I wouldn't be surprised if you see Intel get into the "high end" graphics market soon.

Clock is ticking... only 46656000s left. :D

Good point, intel is definitely a player for marketshare. But their products have very little relevence to the enthusiast sector. Ultimately I still don't see this as a good thing.

I'm surprised nobody noticed I wrote that intel bought matrox... was a typo, they bought real3d.

I don't understand the big deal people make about SLI/Crossfire. It's such a tiny market. I don't consider either to be cost effective, with the posible exception of the 7950. That is the only SLI-like solution I would possibly consider, and even that is a little too much money.

How many PC's out there do you think are using SLI/Crossfire? My guess is it's well less than one tenth of one percent. Not exactly a big profit area.

And don't forget that SLI/Crossfire will simply be untenable when the DX10 cards hit and require 200 watts for a single GPU. The idea of SLI/Crossfiring these is ridiculous to me.

If you consider facts flame baiting go ahead.

yeah, a lot of people don't realize that intel has the most market share in the graphics market.

I'm hoping this will cause more innovation from nvidia and intel....as well as seeing what AMD/ATI can come up with. I'd especially like to see if intel gets into the enthusiast graphics market.

Your assertion that Intel has a "reliance" on Crossfire is not a fact, in fact it's simply a dull, boring lie. Crossfire is a dead technology, it will be useless with DX10 generation GPUs being released in a few months.

No need to respond to your post. I will let it stand or fall on its own merits.

intel switches to SLI. hits 'i win' button
most of intel's newer chipsets support it. nvidia has disabled driver support. it's nvidia's call, not intel's, to push that "i win" button ;)

Multi-GPU Systems (5494 of 711282 Total Users (0.77% of Total)

Actually there are more people with a X-Fi soundcard that SLI/Crossfire...even if people on the forum works hard to convince you otherwise...
Hell just look at the numbers for resolution:
4:3 Aspect Primary Displays (684805 of 711282 Total Users (96.28% of Total)

Yet still the very small minority on big 16:9 LCD's scream up at every review...

So in fact it's probably far less than 1/10 of 1 percent in PC's at large. If only .77% of _gamers_ use SLI/Crossfire then the percent in "normal" PC's is probably more like 1/100th of 1 percent.

Good God, what would happen if this huge market faced a shakeup!!!! Dogs and cats, sleeping together!

yea, i was thinking the same thing... who cares about multi gpu? most people dont, because they are just not practical, and ppl have way better things to spend their money on.

I for one will probably never buy more than a single gfx card to power my computer, and I suspect the vast majority of people, and gamers, feel the same.

Yup...why do you think they are putting out so much PR about GPU-physcis?
They need something to boost their dual-gpu solutions..cause praphics isn't doing it ;)

teehee :p

no Anaheim Electronics makes Gundams well Mobile suits in genaral

but as to what other ppl are saying i dont see any problems for Intel in this other then losing a 3rd party chipset make but that wont be too bad...
though with the number of intel laptops that use ATi graphics that could start to limit choices

If they don't want to loose 100 million, keep selling them. ATI license runs out for Next Gen Intel processors, NOT current ones. The question is, will folks now trust them?

Intel and AMD inside what a combo. :p At least admit the circumstances are funny.

No I don`t expect Intel to change anything right away they will keep using ATI for the launch.
The point is all the benefit of upgrading lies in graphics which are not limited by the GPU. So what your saying is only .77% need to upgrade?

Remember all the criticism Kyle took for not using a 7950 or Cross Fire? If it does not fit your point of view do you just forget it?

The point is Intel still has a great processor in Conroe. This is just a bump in the road for Intel and they will change the tire and go on.

I dunno about that. I would say it more like AMD is building a new wall using red ATI bricks, and Conroe is 2 new brake pads, but 2 are still failing and Intel is trying to stop the truck before it smashes into the wall.

honestly i dont see how intel would be worried...most intel cpu's are sold with intel chipsets and intel graphics. they never had to really rely on anyone but themselves unlike AMD with both chipsets and graphics. It might have a shake up in the enthusiast market but that's just a small percentage....i am looking forward to see what comes of this (in the enthusiast market) hoping that it's all good.

Yep, and this allows for AMD to only rely on themselves. Let's see how they do in the low-end market. Could be bad, since anything ATI/AMD integrated would probably whoop some GMA950 (or whatever) butt. Not that it would make a difference for most people who play games like "The Sims" or some online poker (most users). Eh. Should be interesting.

Honestly I do not see why people are getting worked up. ATI will still most likely make Crossfire chipsets for Intel for years to come. They certainly have a good change to excel in the enthusiast market.

Huh stepped foot in a business in a while. Still dominated by Intel with Intel Graphics as most people have stated Intel mostly relies on itself for its most important market, business.

As for the ATI and AMD merger, I am a bit discouraged to be honest, the smaller amount of competitors usually end up costing the end-user in the long run. May not be now, but its not too far off. At least ATi and AMD are not the two goliaths merging, Intel and Nvidia. Which Nvidia is threatening thanks to widening its product lines to things like cellphones.

What if instead of bracking Intel pushes the pedal to the floor and obliterates the AMD wall ? ;)

Because this is what Intel is doing by canibalizing their Pentium brand in the price war and using the Core products to up the revenues...

Yes but so far, all AMD has done is go out and mark where they want to build the wall. This gives Intel plenty of time to fix or replace those two bad pads. Please don't talk are write as if we're two years down the road already.

With all the talk of the AMD Timna like integration, a bunch of folks should be worried.

this deal just looks like AMD messed up... their stock price is so much lower than before, they probably weren't expecting such a large drop before they bought ATI, but had to go through with the deal because it was probably in the works for some time.

ouch, AMD management strikes again
