Well i managed to pick up a nice Athlon MP 2200+ whick runs at 1800mhz but i want to do some major O/Cing with it, could you guys suggest a few good mobo's for a socket A that are good O/Cers.

well i've got an Abit AN7 i think its most excellent has some awesome features.. never OC'ed much would like to get a mobile proc to do so... i hear this board is one you can squeeze every bit of life out of a cpu lol... g/l to ya!

The NF7-S Rev. 2 and the AN7 are pretty much the same board with the uGuru added to the AN7. I would recommend either of those.

Thanks guys, i had a look on the Abit website but it dosen't tell you much. Does anyone know if the multiplier can be changed on these boards, and also if they have AGP/PCI locks in the bios.

yes to all questions on the nf7-s rev2. i love this board. careful though there is a value line board called the nf7s2 this is different from the nf7-s revision 2.0, just make sure you clarify that

cheers, you won't be dissappointed with the board

sorry but i'm getting a little confused with the board you have said about, i had a look on the ABIT website but could only find the NF7-S HERE is this the one you are talking about if not can you give me a link:)

you found the right one, just keep to that one, if you read that page

Note: NF7-S/NF7-V2.0 aren't equivalent to NF7-S2. NF7-S/NF7-S V2.0 are independent motherboards designed to satisfy the needs of any hard-core enthusiast. If you are looking for NF7-S2, please click here.

the s2 is basically a dumbed down version of the S v 2.0 boards. so you are golden

If I'm not mistaken, on top of uGuru being on the AN7 board, the AN7 uses lesser capacitors than the NF7-S (rev 2.0).

Bad news for me:(, the 2200+MP i got was faulty but i am still interested in getting a new MOBO for my 2600+ XP. I have read a few webpages on the NF7-S and i get the impression that i can put my Athlon XP 2600+ into it and still be able to change the multiplier. something about the BIOS in the NF7-S can turn an XP into a MP without manually unlocking it. Can someone confirm this for me.

Ok now you're asking tougher questions. You may or may not be able move the multiplier around on that 2600+ because AMD started hard locking the AXP's after a while and therefore you can't move the multi even on the nforce2 boards. If your AXP is older and has the brown packaging and not the green translucent packaging I think you'll be ok. Theres a specific week those new locked chips rolled out, can't remember when exactly. So, if your AXP is a newer one, the KT600 board can up the FSB just as well as the nforce2 boards like the NF7. If its an older one, then finding a NF7 would be beneficial most likely cause you can play with the multiplier then too.

Ok it's not a very good photo, cause i only took it with the camera built into my phone but to me it looks like the brown packaging. I'm not sure but is'nt the green packaging alot darker than this.

This is a picture i got off ebay, comparing my CPU to this it looks like i may have the brown packaging but i'm not sure can anyone identify it for me.

Athlons come in either color. Usually you see the green version on pics but thats only cuz it looks better in most peoples opinion. If you'll notice, the code on the green proc says its an XP 3000+.

BTW, is that thermal paste all over that thing? Man, people need to learn how to apply that stuff. You just need it on the core, not the whole thing.

Yes i know athlons come in either colour that is why i'm trying to find out if mine could be unlocked, all i know is if it was made before week 37 or something like that it can be unlocked but the ones after that are somehow "Superlocked" and it can't be changed.

I do also realise the seccond pic is a 3000+ but like i said i posted it to display a colour to compare mine to, trying to figure out if mine is actually brown or not.

About the thermal paste no my CPU it was from the first time i did it and i got told to put a small line on the core longways so it looks like one and a half grains of rice, i then found out the thermal paste i used was cheap and nasty it seeped over the core onto the top of the processor, when i tryed to wipe it off it just smeared making it worse. Even after i used Isopropyl on it that is the best i could get it.

If you have the serial numbers, you should be able to just punch those in, and see when the chip was made, and go from there. That'll be the easiest way of determining how lock/unlocked the chip is, and then you can work out how the chip you have will integrate with the mobo.

so where do i type the numbers on my CPU in google or somewhere on the AMD website to find out that information.

Drworm2005.

You should be able to do it in google, and you'll get some kind of a hit. You can also use CPU-Z to get more info on the processor once it's actually installed in a mobo.

Well i'm getting my new MOBO next week so i'll have to take the CPU out to put it in. I think i'll wait till then.

Here's what CPU-Z tells me.

slightly off topic.. but not really.. what is the max vdimm on an nf7-s v2. and on an an7 ?? and will both of them take a zalman 7000 hsf?

i have some bh-5.. and i figured that picking up either one will let me actually get something out of it.

also to the OP.. newegg has both the nf7-s and the an7 in their refurb section for about $50 for either one... i know they seem to change prices every 13 minutes but roughly around there..

I can only speak for my nf7-s v2.0 and stock max voltage is 2.9v I have a booster to take it higher, and modded bios' allow for more too. The Zalman 7000's will fit, BUT you must make a cut to the attachment bar to clear the capacitors to the left of the cpu socket. It will make it useless for anything other than socketA after that.

My vote is for the NF-7s v2.0 as well......you won't find better bang for your buck in SocketA anywhere, period. As for that 2600, look on the black label.the second line will have 4 numbers together after a series of letters. That is the year/week of that year that the chip was made. ex: an unlocked 3000 chip I have is 0305 thus, made week 5 of 2003.

Thanks heaps for the info.

I had a look and my CPU says, 0412 December 2004. So i guess it can't be unlocked. On the brighter side i got my Abit NF7-S Rev 2.0 today and it's great :D I bumped the FSB upto 200mhz and i'm now getting 2.3Ghz stable.

Thanks for all your help guys.
