What mixture are you using in your loop?

I have some experience with Hydrx but have found that it still left a white film in tubes after about 6 months.

What else are people using out there for a solution for mixing with distilled water? I am not looking for a non-conductive set-up.

Also, how can I get a Blue colored soliution that won't compromise anything?

Any dye you add will compromise something, the question is how much of an impact will it have and will it actually effect performance... the answer to those questions is, in most instances, not at all (unless you're using a gallon of dye or something). I've used food grade dye in two of my loops for the last 2 years with no complications.

My current workstation and fileserver WC mixes
(and sorry, I eyeballed it so I don't have exact ratios):
Distilled Water
Zerex Racing Coolant
Blue Food-grade Food Coloring
Listerine (Yes, Listerine)

My gaming PC currently uses:
Distilled Water
Innovatek ProProtect
Green Dye-lite

My next build will be using the same (roughly) mix as the gaming PC but I'm planning on adding some food coloring to it to pump up the color a little in the external res.

If you want blue water, the best mix for you would probly be distilled water and an antifreze called pentosin.

It can be obtained form BMW dealerships and VW dealerships.

It will keep the nasties from growing, as well as prevent cooling.

Where can you get Innovatek ProProtect and what does it do?

Hmm...will the VW dealership actually sell this to me?

I use This just mix it with distilled water has the right amount of everything in it .

Sure. Would any car parts shop sell you anti-freeze? It's basicly just a blue verision of what is normally used in your car for all intents and purpouses.

Ok cool... I will call them tomorrow. Funny that you say VW since I am a GLI owner.

Do you have a reccomended mixture and do I need anything else to prevent algae etc?

I think Bella suggested Listerine to kill the algae. Swiftech has stuff called HydrX coolant. Prevents algae and corrosion. About 2 bucks for a 2oz bottle.

Yes they do, but I am not about to mix Hydryx with Pentosin.

As far as the listerine goes...well...I do not know about that one?

Be sure to add a few drops of the good stuff.

Picked some up today to drop a few drops in my loop. Some anti-freeze/coolants kill algea, but most are anti-corrosive...and considering I got the cheap stuff, I just spent the $4 and got this to make sure it's dead. I figure it beats the time cleaning out the loop if I end up getting growth. The regular Iodine was $3, but for $1 more it's clear....and it's for a water loop. No brainer.

Actually I have heard that using Iodine will cause white residue in your loop very quickly. Do you have experience with this first hand?

I've always bought it from Frozen CPU before. The bottle is kinda small and the recommended mix ratio will probably require two bottles depending on the size of your loop and res.

FrozenCPUs prices tend to be higher than many other online retailers but I will say the shipping tends to be VERY fast from them. They also have a great selection of items.

I've had problems with getting the wrong item from them a couple of times but they have great customer service and usually get things sorted out pretty quickly.

Nah, was reading up about it over @ OCF, but I only used a few drops (diddn't pour it in or anything). I highly doubt it'll cause any residue, and if it does, I'll use it as an excuse to swap out my coolant for some Zurex Racing Coolant or something. :p I'll post if it causes any sort of build up or clouding.

the reason why anti-freeze works as an algaecide is because it is made up of glycol, which has a tendancy to kill just about anything living. As far as I know, all commercial anti-freeze is glycol based, therefore making all anti-freeze work good as an algeacide.

lololol.

Thats a bad thing isn't it? Isn't cooling what were after? Hahahaha, I think you mean to say Induce Cooling.

Hmmm. Sorry man, I can't help you out with the blue coolant =\, I know for fact that a lot of people here are starting to use Pentosin in their loops and appear to have a lot of success with it.

Personally, I don't care about the color of my coolant, as long as nothing grows or I see nothing growing, i'm happy. I'm using a mixture of 50/50 Glycol and Distilled Water. Its orange and UV reactive too! =D

damn, that was way back at the beginning.

To the guy above me: the OP is looking for a blue mixture, which watter-wetter does not give.

i personally buy a bottle of hydrx and mix it with steam distilled water until my loop is full. my res. isn't large at all, so i'm certain the ratio of hydrx to distilled water is sufficient to keep my metals looking new and my tubing residue-free. :)

Interesting...how long have you been running the loop? I have always had the white film on my lines when using Hydrx so I am going to be trying out the Blue Anti-Freeze as reccomended this time around.

I've had it running in my current loop at least 8 months. I noticed that with clearflex, a little film had formed after the first 9 months I ran the loop. With Tygon (what I exclusively use now and have been for 8 months), I haven't seen any residue form yet.
In a few months, I'll probably drain and refill it again, and hopefully theres no residue so I don't have to spend another $20-25 on tubing.

What tubing did you use?

Actually I was using Clearflex and now will be using Tygon as well. I used the white film as an excuse to justify spending 3x the amount per foot on tubing.

It's a bit excessive, but it probly wont hurt anything too much. 50/50 works for cars and whatnot cause you have to make sure it wont freeze, but in a computer you dont have to worry about it freezing.

If you use a Hydrx/distilled water mixture with Clearflex tubing, you will get some sort of white residue on your tubing. I have not seen this happen with any other brand tubing. I am using Hydrx/Distilled Water with Masterkleer 7/16" tubing.

Water Wetter is NOT good for your loop. It does leave behind a thin film that will harm your components. Spend the $2 and get Hydrx instead.

Danger Den's MCT is good stuff too. It is non-conductive, so if a leak occured, it would not harm your computer. Also, it's very cheap and highly recommended. I am going to switch to MCT-40 when I add a Maze-4 to my loop.

Ive been an advocate for using betadine in a cooling loop for a while.
I decided to test something out a while back when my innovatek res broke and i made one outta copper. well I just added my normal coolant mix and 3 drops of betadine...2.5 years later nothing is growing in it and im on the same coolant which will be getting changed here soon when I do a A64 swap. I was trying to go for 3 years but sadly thats gonna be cut short lol. but my tubing is still clear as when i bought it :)
also betadine has an added side effect that saved my ass when I had a D-tek block with their soft ass poly top.
the poly cracked around the barbs and allwoed water to leak out. well the betadine once it was exposed to the air it starts to "gum" up and it patched the crack. I wouldnt have even noticed the crack if I didnt swap from a 2400+ to a 2500+ mobile.
so for me anymore ive been using
distilled
either zerex racing or royal purple ive ditched water wetter since
andof course 2-3 drops (1 teaspoon for a small loop 1 tabel spoon for a large loop)

as far as a ratio goes..meh I eye ball it :p

I'm using PC Ice with some Dtek UV dye added, since by itself PC Ice is not very UV reactive. Already had a leak that dripped on my video card, and surprisingly nothing happened. Temps are great too.

If the Betadine gums up when exposed to air, how do you fill your system?

No no it doesnt gum up immediately upon contact with air.
if you got some betadine at your house put a drop on your fingers youll notice it kinda has an oil consistancy to it...then it starts getting thicker and thicker over time. this is what im talking about. when you are adding it to your system it doesnt just gum up you can just add it and be done with it.

I use de-ionised water and ACFluid - it's clear, doesn't stain the tubing (the dye made a good job of that  ) and after about 4 months of the same water I can't see any crud in the blocks :)

I normally say no to deionized water since the water will then pull the ions out of the metals in your loop.
distilled is fine.
