They run benchmarks of AMD current CPU to future Intel CPU's that are still 6-12 months away and now Intel is "king"? Shouldn't we wait to benchmark AMD future CPUs that are coming out in 6-12 months with these new Intel's?

The benchmarks are impressive but nothing to conclude such a title as "Intel Regains the Performance Crown" as said by AnandTech.com

I'll wait till I make my fair conclusion.

A 2.66GHz Conroe was benched against an FX-60 @ 2.8GHz, and you don't think it's fair that they benched Conroe against an overclocked FX-60? Give me a break dude. I have nothing against AMD but in my honest opinion their upcoming socket AM2 + DDR2 ram will not have much of a performance gain against Conroe. Were Intel enthusiasts bitching when Intel chips based on a 6 year old NETBURST architecture were being benched against AMD's A64 line? I think not! Why can't you just accept the fact that Intel's next-generation desktop chip kicks the shit out of AMD's fastest chip?

AT ran benchmarks with what will be a contemporary speed A64 FX when the Conroe is released: the Athlon FX-62 (2.8GHz). The FX-64 is coming out in 2007. There are rumors of a 4MB L3 cache FX processor, but nothing concrete. Then there's also a 3GHz+ Conroe XE, so even that rumor is moot for relative performance. BTW, FX-62 and FX-64 processors are 125W. Conroe is 65W and the XE is rumored to be around 84W.

Socket AM2 + DDR2-800 will give a slight boost, but the Conroe system was only tested with DDR2-667MHz memory, so it will also get a boost from DDR2-800 memory.

IMO, AMD got a fair shake as far as speeds are concerned. AMD's next generation CPU isn't due until late 2007-2008 from statements AMD made a little over a month ago.

It'll go out for sampling soon enough. Estimates place it 4 to 6 months from now, the actually date has consistently quoted in June or July. There is no precedent to indicate a delay at this stage will occur.

I guess we will have to see :D I swing either way in terms of AMD and Intel.

Competition won't hurt eh? Bring this board back to life and I'm sure review websites will be busy in the next few months :)

About time AMD went to DDR2.

LOL! I am sure that when Anandtech gets their Conroe Engineering Sample, they will test it against their AM2 sample. OR. AMD will gracefully ask for their sample back to save face. And if the second case doesn't happen, there will be cries of foul play because the AM2 rig is not a production sample.

intel !!!!!'s have been feeling repressed the past couple years and this is their chance to let it all out.

lol... all !!!!'s are pure idiots. :D

lol yah all this stuff happens. Let us not forget about nvidia and ATI. I want one of them to come out with a card that supposely kicks anothers REALLY bad, then we can get a huge dicussion on that subject :D

Maybe all the main PC component companies: RAM, cpu, video, HDD, mobo should all release these products that supposely beat the crap out of their competition at the same time. I think this forum would die from too much bandwidth :D

First off your spreading FUD conroe is 4 months away and I been waiting for it 1 year and 8 months . Loyally. . The compare was done against X2@2.8 GHz a future AMD speed bin. If you think AM2 is going to be an improvement your sadly mistaken and don't understand the concept of a constant latency between ondie vs onboard memory contoller.

Sure at low bandwidth ddr400 seen a hugh advantage. But switch to DDR2 @ higher bandwidth the advantage is eroded. Since the constant latency of ondie and onboard remains the same the advantage erods as higher speed bandwidth becomes more relavant.
Since intel can go to differant memory much easier than Amd intel now has the advantage.
When AM2 appears you shall find out that I am correct and you are a FUD spreader.

The questionis, are the benchies real, as rahul sood says, he remembers a benchmark where a SINGLE core FX-57 wiht a 6800 GT setup got 183.3 FPS.
Also, if you look at the pic of the bios, it says unsupported processor, so i don't know if the FX 60 is really operating with 2 cores.
finally, the ram was being run at 2T, which does make a substatial difference.
Look at this http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/03/08/intel_conroe_benchmark_fear/
Isn't it a little odd that the OC'ed 60 is scoring worse than the stock FX 60

no i agree with the first dude. go compare some FX-62 benchies to that of conroe.

Intel has always had approx the same performance as AMD. i mean there EE line is pretty sweet. but the FX series... is cheaper.

Really I believe the results ananda posted you don't not a Big deal . I have waited so long now that sometimes I let good judgement fly out the window. I know its still 4 months Away. Your right these probably are not accurate benchies. Intel has 4 months to tweak things so it will more than likely be a bigger ass kicking than were actually seeing. Thanks for bring me back to earth.

huh....

well there was the X1900 that was a clear winner over the 7800GTX.. and then the 7900(donno model) is (RUMERD) support Quad sli. does quad sli cleary kick Ati's ass? you cant really get quad crossfire i mean. not only would it look retarded but i donno if you can get that much info thru those dongle cables.

and yea mac sorta stabbed intel. "dull little boxes" "dull little tasks". i donno if i like a company that, should i buy a processer from, im sticking it in a dull little box. a dull little Logisys Janus Box, with blue lights and cool coolness.

naw theres never gonna be a clear winner. i mean AMD got the 64bit technology first. that scared the jeheebus outta intel. but they got it too. eventually.

Mr. wizzard are you going to share what your smoking? Or are you going to bogart it?

Ya AMD got 64 bit first been beating drums about it ever since to bad only a few apps for it. . Have to wait for vista to really matter.

Really don't care if quad sli is 10x faster than ATI. 2 R600 will kill 4 G80's

I don't think quads well be very impressive to be honest 1000wattPS M/B probably won't beable to take it. All kinds of corruption . I will go on record right now quads are going to be a nv night mare. ATI will never go quads unless its with 2 cards. and It would still suck. NV is going quads because they know that ati has them by the balls its that simple.

I think ATI is very pleased that they partnered up with Intel . And NV got left out in the cold but its alright they will have their quad sli to keep them warm.

omg i thought u were saying that quad sli wasnt out in march and am2 isnt out in june... i just went and got all my links together T.T

anywho if you REALLY believe that 2 gpus can beat 4 other gpus, im not gonna talk about that, your too damned ignorant.

and ATi partnered up with intel. this is news to me, and the jews(intel is baised in Israel). if you woundn't mind posting a link...

ok and Nvidia has quad sli to keep em warm, they also have nf4, along with quattro. infact i suspect you are even using an NF4 board. everyone knows its just better then the Xpress. not to say that the Xpress will never become as good as, they just havnt been making chipsets as long.

third. nvidias leaves WAY more up to the Board maker (whats the abbreviation im looking for????). this means that, theres always a way to improve on the core. the R520 performened better then the G70 for about five minutes.

and why exactly is the R600 gonna be ledgendary? because it breaks a new round number? people have that crap stuck in there head. its not good, dont listen to it. its crap. crap head.

Intel is based in isreal. really . I am slow taken notes. I said 2R600 will beat 4 G70 thats what I said .

Ya intel and ATI jumped into bed together with chipsets.

I am hoping intel finds away to stop sli on Intel M/B I am sure they can

AM2 is not a new AMD architecture. It is just AMD switching sockets and moving to DDR2 thanks to an updated memory controller.

AMD's next architecture has been pinned to late 2007->mid 2008 somewhere, and it is called the "K10". All of AMD's chips in the last little while (A64) have been based on K8, and the AM2 will also have K8 chips. All they will have to compete with Conroe for at LEAST a year is... K8 chips. So good luck to them :D

Yeah last I heard, since the production of Conroe and Merom has been going so great, they should be released between June and August. I hope this is true!!!

People just need to accept the fact that AMD is going to be a little behind. But once the K10 processors come out, we might see them taking the lead again. It is just going to back and forth between the 2 companies throughout the years, and people just need to accept this. I buy what is the best deal when I want to buy something. I dont show any Fan-boyism towards any company. People really need to the same and stop arguing about stupid crap like this. Face it Intel, might win back the crown for a year or two. The world is not going to end, everyone resume your lifes!!!

Isn't it a little odd that the OC'ed 60 is scoring worse than the stock FX 60

As I posted in another thread:

We need to question what BIOS "support" really means. Does it cripple the chip or does it simply misreport or not know what CPU is installed? Just because it doesn't recognize that chip as an FX-60 doesn't mean the performance was crippled. We also don't know if the latency issue that was mentioned affects this particular setup. Rahul was also wrong in his statements that latency "massively" affects performance. This may have been the case pre-IMC but we now know it doesn't necessarily mean all that much. We have this:

http://techreport.com/etc/2005q4/me...cy/index.x?pg=9

According to that report memory latency doesn't have much effect in UT2004. So even if the DFI board had higher latencies than reported it doesn't cover the performance difference. The UT2004 scores ARE probably lower on the Intel FX-60 than reported elsewhere. Anand states that an Intel demo was run. Intel probably picked a map or situation that reflected the Conroe in a positive light. It's analogous to the early athlon days when the athlon beat the p3 in quake2 in normal situations but beat it even more when a special demo was run called crusher which stressed the strong FPU. Intel probably did something similar but it's still an accurate representation as that situation could ACTUALLY be found in gameplay.

Another thing to look at is the FEAR performance. Judging by the difference in the speed of the athlon and Conroe the game was CPU limited at that resolution running x1900s in crossfire. Anand was able to run HIS test in FEAR which is the same test he uses to benchmark in-house. It's simply a matter of finding a previous benchmark running a similar config to see if the athlon machine was crippled.

Page A: http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows...aspx?i=2713&p=3

Page B: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2679&p=12

Page C: http://www.pcper.com/article.php?ai...e=expert&pid=10

There we have it. Anand's tests show that an FX-57 (2.8 GHz) on an RD480 board gets 133 fps at a CPU limited resolution. Intel's machine has an FX-60 at 2.8GHz getting 132 fps. The third link shows that at CPU limited resolutions dual core doesn't affect FEAR performance. It appears that the Intel benchmark is spot on with what Anand gets in-house. The only real difference is that the in-house test uses 2GB of RAM with slightly looser timings.

It's time to just swallow the hard truth. The Conroe really IS faster. I know it's tough to do for some people, but it's time. I know people are under the delusion that AMD will pull something out of a hat within the next four months, but they WILL NOT be able to overcome a 20% deficit without huge modifications to the core itself. Unless they've already taped out new silicon, they simply won't have such a revision ready by the summer.

AM2 will allow the athlon64 to utilize DDR2 memory which will increase the amount of bandwidth available. However, in most situations the athlon is not starved for bandwidth.
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipset...aspx?i=2469&p=5
There simply isn't much return for high bandwidth unless you are doing some heavy multitasking. Let's not forget that DDR2 will offer higher bandwidth at HIGHER latencies which will offset some of the performance improvement. I see a 5-10% improvement in the best cases. Still, not enough to match Conroe. Let's not forget that Conroe is six months away from being released. Many here will discount its performance for that reason alone. However, this almost certainly means that Conroe's performance will almost certainly improve between now and release as it moves to more mature platforms using newer silicon. Don't let company loyalty blind your logic.

The P4 was a loser in general. It was slower when it came out and it was slower when the a64 was released. Granted it was faster in many applications when 3.2C was out and was competing against Barton. However, the last couple of years have belonged to AMD. Therefore, it's no surprise that the Conroe was made not to match the Athlon, but to beat it in nearly every situation. It only makes sense, and frankly isn't much of a surprise. AMD will play catch-up for awhile now until it releases a new core that beats the Conroe. They leapfrog each other and prices drop. I win. That's all I care about really.

BTW, just want to add that I run a 3800+ and have owned nearly every flavor of the athlon since the slot A variant. I also own a 2.8C overclocked to 3.5 which wiped the floor with the t-bred I had in nearly every category, including value. I'm after value over anything.

EDIT: Let's not also forget that the bit-tech review of the FX-60 used an entirely different platform and video card. Simply, there are too many variables to compare their original FX-60 results to the Intel results. Look at my comparison above to see comparisons using the same chipset and vid card setup. Much more valuable comparison in my opinion.

That's right people, all those preview "benchies" are "crap". I beg you, please just ignore them all, as "da benchies" can't be trusted.

Good advice MrWizard. Everyone be sure to wait it out, and not get excited about these obviously false reports from unbiased and reliable third party websites about Conroe's complete and total dominance or AMD's suddenly obsolete architecture.

And I also urge you to wait for AM2, even if Conroe ships earlier than anticpated, as it's the real deal for sure! Ignore AMD currently being pressed up against the thermal wall at 120TDP+ with their current architecture like a Compton police officer holding a crystal meth addict down to put the cuffs on him. Ignore the fact that an AM2 "FX-62" or "FX-64" is a thousand dollar processor while the Conroe E6700 at 2.66GHz is confirmed to vendors at a $537 price point. Ignore all of that, this man is the voice of reason!

*evil laugh is heard as Mako presses the pre-order button on his Conroe XE which will be sure to be in stock while others "wait" to be told the obvious...;)

Good post DH.

Look, even the most hardcore pro-Intel person didn't at one point say to himself "Damn those AMD chips are fast...if we just could put an AMD chip on an Intel core-logic set we'd be set" at some point over the past couple years.

It was the stability, and reliability, of the Intel platform that kept me from every moving to an AMD-based solution, even as a gamer. I was willing to give up that 10 or 15% overall performance that the AMD procs provided in order to not have to download countless drivers, updates, bug fixes, etc, for various third-party core-logic based chipsets. Not worth the time. Particularly when the resolutions I game at (24" 1920x1200 Samsing LCD since 2003) don't really see a benefit from a faster CPU. It's GPU-bound at that level in big way, and that's always been the area worth upgrading for that goal. I went to the 2.4C Northwood in 03, and haven't looked back.

But now, finally, Intel people don't have to "wish" for the death of Netburst, and 31-stage endless pipelines, and massive heat levels from huge clock rates. The long night is over, and the sunrise looks pretty good. It's a nice upgrade going from an overclocked 3GHz Northwood CPU to a dual-core 3GHz Conroe XE, a tangible boost that will be felt in daily use for sure.

If only we could go three years between video card upgrades, then we'd be set...;)

Don't worry, ATI only has a fraction of the resources and market share, ATI CAN go out of business and I wouldn't give a damn.

...I've never seen more FUD in my life. Stability was not an issue for most AMD users, bang for your buck was. $90 2100+ TBredB? $95 XP-M? If stability/drivers or what not was that bad, of course I'd pay extra for the "Intel stability", LOL. Unfortunately that's where your argument falls on its face. I haven't had any problems with my nForce2. It's given me an awesome 3 years, and was pretty much my first DIY project that got me into computers in the first place. You really think that if AMD's chipsets were so unstable that so many would buy them?

BRAVO! My 2.8C is looking to be retired and will be 3 years old in June, crazy huh.. Conroe is the future, and I do not believe that AMD will regain the performance crown until they come out with a new architecture, which might not be too far off, but definetly not the M2 for now.

However the guy stating that Intel is bsaed in Isreal is just plain wrong, Intel started in Santa Clara and is still there..

Yes they have some plants there, just like the other 55 COUNTRIES they are in as well, thats what happens when you are the world's biggest processor manufacturer

Who is it that is ATI's parent company . God I should know this. Think man you worked on their equipment in the manufactoring business for 20 years. Think man. Who is ATI's daddy . God all their video cards are in all those vision add machines all over the world what is it . Markham is that it. Now I wonder who produces the video cards for Markham
Key industries I wonder who,s video cards they use. Dam sometimes I get so confused between markham and ATI . You open up a Keys and a Markham VPU is staring you in the face.

I don't think any in germany I wouldn't trust them as far as I could through them. China might get a token fab same as nam. But nothing really Hi tech.
