I haven't gotten a clear image from basic google searching to what all these 2wireXXX wifi networks are that I've been finding along a lot of city streets these days. Are these private ISP wifi networks for customers that don't require copper to the home? Seems like a convenient way for apartments to get internet, albeit with security risks I'm sure. Assuming a lot at this point, if anyone can clarify that would be great! My curiosity thanks you in advance :)

AT&T Uverse wifi router/modems, probably. Lots around me too.

Also goes for AT&T's DSL gateways / routers. These are ones provided by AT&T if u order a wifi equipment package or get one free if u get higher tier packages.

Our ISP here uses them as well for their gateways. They are actually pretty good for Joe Blow. If you start to want to port forward and do more advanced stuff they can get a bit annoying, but for Grandma and Grandpa they work decent.

they use 2Wire as the ISP leased router/modem combo if you order DSL with Wireless Home Networking on Bellsouth (ATT)....i had to deal with it once at my folks house, fairly low rent, annoying to use, annoying to work on......you know...the plug n play stuff

Confirmed on the AT&T units. My Uverse Wifi has a 2Wire default network name. I disabled wireless on it, my wireless goes through a Netgear 3700.

But yeah, its AT&T based ISP stuff.

Its not just AT&T. 2wire started out making DSL gear. AT&T uses it almost exclusively, but they are not the only large provider to use it extensively.
