4k? You're going to need at least a 5070ti preferably a 5080. You may need to adjust your budget accordingly. Or downsize to 1440p for future games.

Need it now? 4070ti super, 7900xtx. That’s about all you are going to touch that’s current gen under $1k.

New cards do not have any third party reviews yet.

Used 4080 Super once the 5XXX releases.

There isn't enough information available right now to give really great advice beyond count your moneys and buy that moneys' worth of card. Maybe in a couple of weeks. I wouldn't upgrade unless you have to.

If you are trying to play games at 4K, you want the absolute fastest GPU on the market. If you can't afford that, you should still buy the fastest GPU you can afford and get used to turning settings down on the latest titles.

It's not rocket surgery. People make this complicated and it isn't. Gaming at 4k? Get the most expensive GPU. You have to pay to play at 4K. I don't understand why anyone who doesn't want to buy the most expensive GPUs would even buy a 4K display to begin with.

Come on everyone! We have been told that the 5070 is as fast as a 4090 and that’s only $549! With that being said I’m in the market for a $6-700 used 4090 so hit me up!

Seriously though totally agree with everyone posting so far. If you are chasing the 4K dragon then you need to start at at least $800 and go up from there. That’s just the state of play right now.

I'm definitely going with a 5090 but if the 5070 is really that fast, I'll probably get one for my girlfriend's rig.

Realistically with pricing being what it is and so on right now scoring a 5070 at msrp is probably the best value in the lineup imo. I have a 4070 super in my sff 9800x3d box and it does everything I need at 1440p. The 5070 should be at least as fast and again at 549 seems decent. I’m tempted to try and get a founders 5070 myself for my other PC.
