For instance I ordered something late at night on the 20th. It is not expected to arrive until Tuesday which is the 25th. In fact it didn't even get picked up by the carrier until the 23rd, ironically I guess this means they work on Sunday. To me that means that amazon spends 2 whole days, the 21st and 22nd just to put this 1 item in a box.

Am I expecting too much? Does prime shipping mean they can still take as long as they want to package the item up?

Typically it means delivery expected in 2 business days from the next available time they can put it in the mail. This can be delayed from lack of stock, holidays, backed up orders to fill, etc.

as long as the item is in stock if you order on a Monday you should get it on Wednesday

2 day shipping means a state of packing that can be same day all the way up to 3-5 days usually and then 2 business days of shipping. It isn't just amazon that does this as some items because of hazmat issues and various other concerns that cause items to need special requirements such as ground shipping.

Amazon is typically extremely precise in how and when they ship their items. They even tell you to order within a specific time frame to receive on a certain date.

In your case, you ordered on Thursday the 20th, late at night, meaning you missed the chance for your item to be shipped out that day, but they most likely sent it out friday. Then you count Saturday and Sunday, which are non-business days, which are not accounted for in shipping. So your item will still be in transit Monday, which will be counted as one business day, and then arrive Tuesday, which will be the second business day.

But say you ordered the item on the 20th at 12 PM, you would have received your item Monday since Amazon would have sent out the item the same day.

2 day shipping means two full business days. That's exactly what you are getting, and I'm quite certain Amazon would have listed the 25th as the guaranteed delivery date before you ever hit the order button.

It's also pretty safe to say that Amazon didn't spend two days packaging your order. For items that are in stock and Prime eligible, Amazon is remarkably good at getting items shipped the same day or the following day for late orders. My guess is that by Friday morning your item was boxed and ready to go, and anything that happened after that is UPS's responsibility. Regardless, the delivery date is correct for 2-day shipping, so the series of events between now and then don't really matter. Don't like it... order early in the week :p

I have never had an item take more than 2 business days to get to me via prime. The cutoff time is listed on the item page and it says when you'll receive it. With sunday USPS delivery i am getting packages 7 days a week now from amazon.

Two days usually means two business days. I've had some Amazon Prime packages arrive the next day, though, and on two occasions in the past three months, on a Sunday. Once, I ordered an item on a Sunday afternoon, and it arrived Monday. (mindblown) It helps that one of their warehouses is located in nearby Fernley, Nevada, and I'm located in the Sacramento, CA area.
