What do you recommend for $200?

I am posting for a friend who just upgraded to a new HP 24" monitor and wants faster graphics. Back when I bought the 6950 flashed to 6970 was the card to get but I'm not sure that's still an option with the new cards. Any suggestions?

This ^^^ but also you can't get a 6950 for $200 to flash to a 6970 anyway. That's in a while other price bracket. I'd recommend a 6870 or a GTX 470. Perhaps the up and coming GTX 560 NON Ti may be a good card and great overclocker, however a GTX 560 Ti has been known to float around that price after MIR so maybe that's the best bet in that price range but we gotta hold off on any recommendations for sure until you post the full specs of your pc including;

Power supply: make/Model
CPU: Model/ Current speed
Ram:

I got my 6950 for $259 thought maybe they'd come down. Anyway like I said not for me but a buddy.

He has AMD dual core 3.0 Ghz
4 GB 1333 ram
case is antec solo
mobo is BIOSTAR A880G+
PSU is antec 480W
current GPU is 8800GT

I would probably get a 6850 with that setup. anything faster would have pretty diminishing returns with that cpu. even the 6850 itself would only be able to be 60-70% utilized in more cpu intensive game.

I second the 6850. Its stock clocks are low enough that it has plenty of headroom too if he upgrades his CPU, for driving a single 24".

What $200 or so card would you recommend to replace an ATI 4850 that keeps clogging up and going to 100c with a first gen Core i7? Looking for comparable performance, low fan noise and maintenance free (this clogging annoys me and is dangerous)

-- Intel® Corei7-920 Processor(8MB L2 Cache, 2.66GHz)
-- 6GB Tri-Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 6 DIMMs
-- 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4850

Could go to $250 if I had to but don't need screaming performance if I could get something very close for $200

you left out resolution. if all you want is a small performance bump and lower power usage then a 5770 will do.

560Ti beats 6870 in almost everything.
I've got two in sli and it's wonderful.

+1 whatever you do OP, anything that's much faster than this, and it won't be fully utilized. I suggest a 460, 6850, or the like.

OK your at 1920 x 1080. Again, anything faster than the 460 or 6850 won't be fully used, but if you OC a 6870 or 560 might work then.

The 560 non-Ti is right at $200 on Newegg right now. They overclock quite well and will outpace stock-clocked 560 Ti's quite handily, which are on par with 6950's. Obviously, those cards can be overclocked quite a bit as well, but you're talking about a little bit of a price premium.

I have a very very small case, and the upper end of what I can fit is 9.8 inches. I currently have an ATI 4890 which has served me well up until today when I tried to play The Witcher 2. Can anyone help me find a good upgrade that will fit my case?

well you left out pretty much all the info that is needed. what are the rest of your specs in detail? what resolution do you want to play at?

I have 6gigs of ram and an i7. I play at either 1080p or 1920x1280.

power supply? really the only thing worth upgrading to would be at least a gtx560 ti or 6950. a 6950 is too long but the gtx560 ti is just fine.

Power supply is some obscure server psu I can't even remember the name of. It's 520 watts. I'll give the 560 a looksy

How does the 470 stack up to the 6870? Are they about equal? And if so, which one would you give the nod to in getting?

Why get a 470 when you can get a 560Ti? 560Ti beats the 470 in most things, and their prices are about parity.

The 470 I was looking at specifically was a refurbished one for 187.99 from newegg.com.

Anyway, not jumping on anything at this point, I'm more interested in seeing where newer generation cards stack up against older generation cards.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

you can get a brand new gtx560 ti for just a little more than that. the gtx560 ti is faster, consumes less power, is much quieter and runs way cooler.

I'm looking at a similar upgrade:

Q6600 @ 3.0, 1920x1200, abit ip35pro mobo (pci 1.0? x16)

It will replace an 8800gtx. Will I see a decent benefit?

it comes down to the game and drivers being used so if you look at reviews it is probably almost even overall.

Gotcha, thanks. That would mean I would choose based on price, and other influences outside of performance.

if you have no issues with getting an AMD card than the 6870 is a MUCH better purchase overall. it is cooler, quieter, and way way less power hungry.

what are the rest of your specs and what resolution will you be running?

Well, since you're interested and talking to me about this, I'll tell what's going on. I've got a friend looking at a new card to replace his 5770 that he's going to put into another machine. He comes to me for advice after he throws a few of his ideas out there. With the price point he was looking at I initially recommended the 6870 myself especially after some of the rebates you can get. (His price point is right at $200) To make a long story short, I ended up finding [H]ardForum a while ago, lliked what I saw and joined. My friend doesn't do the "forum" thing. I find it's the best way to get advice and learn. So my initial post was just a comparison question between a 470, and a 6870 since I was able to find both of them right around 200 dollars. So, that's that.

My buddy is running an Intel Core i7 930, 6 gig of Corsair XMS ram, Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R, I think a 1 TB Western Digital Black 7200 HDD, and a 750 watt Corsair PSU.

He recently purchased a 24" monitor and I'd wager he runs 1920x1080 resolution.

I'm currently running a Sapphire Toxic 5850 2 GB GPU, and am pretty happy with it yet so I'm not looking right now. As someone else mentioned in another post, I'll wait till the next set of cards come out.

Even Kyle showed that this isn't true.
The 560Ti is significantly faster than the 6870 is about 99% of tasks, and the last 1% it's dead even.

The correct competitor for the 560Ti is the 6950 1GB card. In this comparison, the 6950 is faster in the majority of tasks, but only by a small margin. In the tasks that the 560Ti wins, it's usually a good deal better(Say, Civ5, which I play).
