im new to AMD. what is the difference when its like sledgehammer, or clawhammer, or snowmobile, or whatver.

lol... snowmobile!! thats funny!

hey, thats a good question. different cores have different arcitecture. THey run at different speeds with different cache's. Thers's a roadmap somewhere, let me check google...

... aw heck... just do a search for "amd roadmap" and you'll see all the different cores for the future. somebody please else clarify!!

EDIT: I know Anandtech had a big huge roadmap a few months ago

in general terms, the process size, cache size. have a look at this roadmap. seems to be the most accurate/current one i've seen

currently availbable in stores:
clawhammer = 1mb cache, 130nm. most are s754, but some are s939 (note the fx's)
newcastle = 512kb cache, 130nm. mix between both sockets
winchester = 512kb cache, 90nm. s939 only

not released or available yet that are worth mentioning: (note that all the following are 90nm)
san deigo = 1mb, presumably s939 only
venice = 512kb, again, probably only 939
newark = 1mb, s754 (mobile clawhammer replacement)
oakville = 512kb, 754 (low voltage mobile)
in the more distant future we have toledo, the dual core fx chip (probably will be fx-57)

I was under the impression that the FX-57 would be a single-core 2.8 GHz processor

p.s. (fingers crossed) here's hoping AMD makes another multiplier-unlocked processor for "power-saving purposes" :D

they already are unlocked for power saving purposes. there's no reason to have multi's over stock unlocked if you're conserving power, hence why they're unlocked down ;)

and we'll see on that fx-57. i would like to see it be a 2.8ghz or 3ghz part with a different name for the dual core and have em launch at the same time.. dx-51 for s starting point sounds nice, but unlikely :D

almost all mobo's allow you to change the multiplier
one stupiulation though, as i implied before, you can only use stock multi and the ones less than it down to 4x

actually it's not too much of a problem. if you're oc'ing, you'll probably get one of the msi k8n neo's or the dfi lanparty. both can easily do 300+mhz, which means for 2.7ghz, even with a 9x multi. seeing as many people don't even get that far, it's nothing to worry about.

weak, AMD. weak. :rolleyes:
If you want higher multi's, then just pay for them. You can easily find the max speed of the processor on its top multi anyhow, as (cf)Eclipse noted. I found mine at 9x242, and with RAM getting to FSB's as high as 330 now...

so w/ the right mobo you can tweak multipliers on A64's like a mobile xp?

You can "tweak" them down, not up :) (unless you have an FX).
