sorry but bad advice at this point if he has the money. many games are going to use more than 4 threads soon so if he wants to keep the cpu for a while then the 4770k makes much more sense. some games already do as there were times in Crysis 3 where my 2500k at 4.4 was hitting almost 100% usage. BF 4 multi will max out my cpu or a 4670k even oced.I'd get the 4670k. I don't think you'll see a performance difference in games. But the money you save will let you get a noticeably better video card.

here you can see that HT will certainly help in BF 4.

yes they look good here but overall its a poor choice for a new build if wanting top performance in ALL games. thinking about a 4770 build myself but I am in no hurry.AMD putting up a refreshingly strong showing here. I expect once Mantle is added, there will probably a further sizable gain.
thats a cpu bench so why in the heck would they run it at 1920x1080 to make it more gpu limited? it shows you what you can expect from your cpu once you are not gpu limited. if you are looking to stay above 50 or 60 fps then you clearly see that having more than 4 cores is helpful in that.Who games at 1680X1050? Is there a 1080p or higher benchmark?
since when is a 2600k half the price of a 4770k? just some special?Considering that an i7 2600k will give you 60 frames as well and that you can buy one of those for half the price of a 4770k it's not really clear what advantage a 4770k gives you to make up for the price difference.
so not half and its used? well I personally think a brand new faster 4770k is worth the extra money.Well it's not quite half, but you can get a used 2600k for just under $200.
