i am using the "windows vista basic". the aero is kind boring.
Aero is boring? That's a first.
"Black Taskbar? BLACK TASKBAR? We don't need no stinkin' Black Taskbars around here..."
The only way to not have that black-ish Taskbar at the present time is with a replacement theme, at least from all my research so far. If anyone finds a rather simple way to do it, I'm game, but I prefer the new theme I'm using which I linked to above anyway.
Looks better than the stock Aero theme in my opinion...

Why would that be irritating? The white text on a black background is one of the easiest combinations to see.the taskbar being black all the time (unless you're on the desktop) is really, really irritating, unless I'm missing something completely.

There are ways of changing the toolbar. As mentioned above, I've seen many instances where the custom color selector was used to change the color. I've never tried it, because I like the black. I've seen green, red, blue, etc.
I love it when people cop an attitude...the old shot first, ask questions later mantra.
You also were given a link to a theme with, as noted, 8 different color schemes.
I don't want a theme. Why should I have to use a theme for what should be in the OS by default? Now you're backtracking because you realize you're wrong.
I'm giving multiple solutions, because you, as usual, begin to fire at the people around you if you don't get what you want, just like a toddler in a toy store. Have you posted on the forums you linked, asking the MS guys when this will be fixed? If not, how else have you registered your complaints with Microsoft? When I'm wrong about something, I'll admit it. However, since I am not an employee of Microsoft, nor did I assist in coding the OS. If you are that unhappy with the choices, I can see your frustrations, but the attitude is uncalled for. If you don't want to use a theme, that's fine, your decision. This thread gave you an option, you don't like the option, fine. It still makes the attitude uncalled for.

If you want black thats fine, I dont. There shouldnt even be an argument over this, there should be an option, end of story.
Right now, i rather like the default settings for Aero. These themes are looking promising though. Ill have to keep an eye on them in case some catch my fancy.
my biggest problem with themes in the past has been general stability. If the directx desktop cures that, then its well and good, I agree.
I can't comment on theming in Vista, but in terms of XP, the use of the uxtheme.dll caused no stability issues. Extra software running just creates one extra possible problem. WindowBlinds caused stuttering and random hangs for me in the past, as did StyleXP. I used the uxtheme.dll on roughly 10 computers, without issue.
I probably never got as far as uxtheme.dll before I stopped using such things out of disgust, because yes, windowblinds and stylexp sucked horribly.
yeah I just set it to white, and aero is boring, and makes my firefox look ugly.......the taskbar is ugly as well.....sorry, but aero is not that great.....compiz/beryl >>> aero. Not starting a flame war, just saying from experience with both.
You don't have to use WindowBlinds or the other additional software to theme XP or Vista, yanno...
All it takes it a quick hex edit (or replacement of an already edited/patched uxtheme.dll) outside the normal XP/Vista environment and wham, you're in like Flynn. Now go find a theming program to modify the necessary stuff you want modded - that doesn't mean you have to use the stuff running in the background like WindowBlinds, etc. Create your own msstyles files, and go from there.
I find it really sad when someone takes the high ground 'round these parts and it gets personal. It's just a thread about themes, for Pete's Sake(c).
I don't know how Linux always ends up getting into these discussions about Windows, but it does get a bit old. Go get Ubuntu and install it - it just works, period.
Have fun, always...
actually it didnt "just work" when I tried to install it, because it didnt have drivers for my 7800gt. I supposedly could have gotten them from some kind of command line...but how is someone who knows nothing about linux supposed to do that?
I hate that everyone who runs linux perpetuates this myth that its some walk in the park, when it most definitely is not.
