i am using the "windows vista basic". the aero is kind boring.

Aero is boring? That's a first. I'm using the Graphite on my two Vista boxes, and I'll be using the Pink on my wife's box that should be built this weekend.

<BEAVIS>huh huh huh, I said wife's box...huh huh huh huh</BEAVIS>

I would use Windows Vista Basic if you could change the color to something other than powder blue.

Yeah, that is odd, in my opinion. I personally really like aero, and the overall appearance of Vista in general is quite pleasing, I think. I use the graphite as well.

Unlike XP, I think it will be quite a while before I feel the need to skin Vista...

I can see people liking or not liking the new interface, but to call something like that boring doesn't make sense to me.

As far as comparing it to X, not only do I like it better, but this is the first version of Windows where I actually like the built-in wallpaper as well.

Not sure about boring. Indifferent might better describe the experience.

I suppose for some people, different is the same thing as better.

Not happy? Try a whole new Vista theme with 8 different color schemes and some changes to the UI... I use it, love it.

In time we'll see a lot more themes popping up.

ps
At that DeviantArt page just under the pic is a link the uxtheme.dll patches you'll need to apply it. Follow the instructions, works like a charm and gives you more choices...

the taskbar being black all the time (unless you're on the desktop) is really, really irritating, unless I'm missing something completely.

"Black Taskbar? BLACK TASKBAR? We don't need no stinkin' Black Taskbars around here..." :p

The only way to not have that black-ish Taskbar at the present time is with a replacement theme, at least from all my research so far. If anyone finds a rather simple way to do it, I'm game, but I prefer the new theme I'm using which I linked to above anyway.

Looks better than the stock Aero theme in my opinion...

If I could make my theme look like this, but have it "Glass Blue" instead, I would be all about it

Have you looked at that link I provided? That replacement theme comes with 8 colors - you should really check that thing out... the bottom image in the preview pic is a great shade of blue, I think.

EDIT:

/me spies Blue Glass... :)

I clearly stated unless you're on the desktop. If you fullscreen windows, the taskbar, at least mine, is black.

Everything must be black (and red)

Why would that be irritating? The white text on a black background is one of the easiest combinations to see.

why the hell are we given the color mixer then? The purpose there should be to be able to make the damn thing any color you want. If you want black thats fine, I dont. There shouldnt even be an argument over this, there should be an option, end of story.
look at all the tremendous inconsistencies pointed out here:
http://shellrevealed.com/blogs/shel...ows-Vista-_2D00_-Fit-_2600_-Finish_2100_.aspx

and time and time again the black is pointed out. I found this when I went looking for a way to change it, and found out how many other people were bitching about it.

There are ways of changing the toolbar. As mentioned above, I've seen many instances where the custom color selector was used to change the color. I've never tried it, because I like the black. I've seen green, red, blue, etc.

are you actually reading? the person above was clueless. try changing it yourself. FULLSCREENED windows are black, end of story.

A post from the guy on the UI team describing why:

I love it when people cop an attitude...the old shot first, ask questions later mantra.

You also were given a link to a theme with, as noted, 8 different color schemes.

I don't want a theme. Why should I have to use a theme for what should be in the OS by default? Now you're backtracking because you realize you're wrong.

I'm giving multiple solutions, because you, as usual, begin to fire at the people around you if you don't get what you want, just like a toddler in a toy store. Have you posted on the forums you linked, asking the MS guys when this will be fixed? If not, how else have you registered your complaints with Microsoft? When I'm wrong about something, I'll admit it. However, since I am not an employee of Microsoft, nor did I assist in coding the OS. If you are that unhappy with the choices, I can see your frustrations, but the attitude is uncalled for. If you don't want to use a theme, that's fine, your decision. This thread gave you an option, you don't like the option, fine. It still makes the attitude uncalled for.

Right now, i rather like the default settings for Aero. These themes are looking promising though. Ill have to keep an eye on them in case some catch my fancy.:)

...and as usual, you try to manipulate events and situations to make others out to be some "bad guy" because they have a disagreement with you.

bluntly: you were wrong.

I've proven this already. I have a different opinion than you do. I quote:

If you want black thats fine, I dont. There shouldnt even be an argument over this, there should be an option, end of story.

What makes me a 'bad guy' over this? That you personally dig black and I dont? Get off your ever present high horse. You're mad I corrected you. It happens, get over it.

my biggest problem with themes in the past has been general stability. If the directx desktop cures that, then its well and good, I agree.

You're confusing being on a high horse, with remaining calm with someone who always flies off the handle. As far as being wrong, sorry. I repeated the comment of someone above, and clearly stated I have never given that a shot. To someone calm and logical, that would mean I can't verify it, but read what someone else said. I also don't need to point out a bad guy, You've volunteered many times. Go check out the thread in GenMay, where DudeItsMe wanted to drop out of college. Instead offering any advice or even giving an opinion, you just flame him unmercilessly. Instead of contributing to the thread, you're quick to the trigger.*

I don't manipulate anything, I stick to what was written. You copped an attitude for no reason, you were called out on it, and now you're trying to rationalize it. Very typical.

You also have ignored a very important part of my comments, which are very telling. You have a problem with something that is present (in this case, not present) in Vista. Perfectly fine. Given you like to post the links from that Shell forum, did you register and create your own posts to make MS aware of your complaints? I'm guessing no, because it's much easier to rant on here, and pop off at those around you.

One other thing you haven't learned. Opinions are neither right or wrong, hence there categorization as opinions. I like the black theme, you don't. No right or wrong. There isn't an acceptable solution in your eyes, so you need to complain through the proper channels.

*The funny thing is, regarding that thread, I agree with everything 100% that you were saying to him. Regardless of how bad his decision making may or may not be, there's no need to be cruel to someone seeking advice.

I can't comment on theming in Vista, but in terms of XP, the use of the uxtheme.dll caused no stability issues. Extra software running just creates one extra possible problem. WindowBlinds caused stuttering and random hangs for me in the past, as did StyleXP. I used the uxtheme.dll on roughly 10 computers, without issue.

I probably never got as far as uxtheme.dll before I stopped using such things out of disgust, because yes, windowblinds and stylexp sucked horribly.

yeah I just set it to white, and aero is boring, and makes my firefox look ugly.......the taskbar is ugly as well.....sorry, but aero is not that great.....compiz/beryl >>> aero. Not starting a flame war, just saying from experience with both.

I agree completely. I gave up on them quickly, after my own issues, and seeing many people complaining as well. I used the uxtheme.dll replacement on all of my XP boxes. It was a single file to replace in the recovery console, or you could even replace it on the XP disc (if you downloaded the compressed version). Then, any themes you wanted to use, worked without loading any extra software. You could chose them just as easy as you'd pick from blue, green, or silver in the built-in Luna themes.

If I had more time, and were only using the pc for fun, I would likely try linux out more, but I dont have time to fight linux to make hardware or software work. I like the clean/minimalist look a lot better than the windows UI.

You don't have to use WindowBlinds or the other additional software to theme XP or Vista, yanno...

All it takes it a quick hex edit (or replacement of an already edited/patched uxtheme.dll) outside the normal XP/Vista environment and wham, you're in like Flynn. Now go find a theming program to modify the necessary stuff you want modded - that doesn't mean you have to use the stuff running in the background like WindowBlinds, etc. Create your own msstyles files, and go from there.

I find it really sad when someone takes the high ground 'round these parts and it gets personal. It's just a thread about themes, for Pete's Sake(c). :)

I don't know how Linux always ends up getting into these discussions about Windows, but it does get a bit old. Go get Ubuntu and install it - it just works, period.

Have fun, always...

actually it didnt "just work" when I tried to install it, because it didnt have drivers for my 7800gt. I supposedly could have gotten them from some kind of command line...but how is someone who knows nothing about linux supposed to do that?

I hate that everyone who runs linux perpetuates this myth that its some walk in the park, when it most definitely is not.

Depends on the park, I'd say.

Old story I heard long ago...

A country farmer is leading his horse that's pulling a wagon full of hay to his barn. A Porsche screams up at high speed, brakes slam on and the car slides towards him almost hitting him.

A slick city boy hops out and asks him where the nearest city is. The farmer says, "It's about 10 miles in that direction."

"Oh yeah," the city boy comments, "what kinda people will I find in that city, old man?"

The farmer pulls out a straw of hay and chews on it while answering: "What kinda people were in the town you came from, sonny?"

"Mean, backstabbing, lying, evil, cheating bastards, all of 'em," the city boy said with disgust.

"Then I reckon that's the kind of people you'll find in that next town," the farmer replies with a grin.

The city boy humphs off and disappears in a cloud of dirt and pieces of hay, leaving deep gouges in the makeshift driveway.

Another car comes down the road, parks at the end of the fenceline, and another stranger approaches the farmer.

"Howdy," he says, "you look like you could use some help."

So the two unload the wagon into the barn without so much as a word spoken.

Afterward, over a glass of lemonade supplied by the farmer's daughter, pigtails swinging, the stranger asks about the next town. The farmer poses the same question about the kind of people in the town the stranger comes from.

"They're kind, honest, hard-working people that do everything they can to help each other become better people."

With another and even larger smile, the farmer shakes the strangers hand and says, "Then that's exactly what you'll find in the next town, son," and sees him off with a pat on the back.

Don't shortsight yourself because of a few meager or lackluster experiences with Linux distros. No, it's not a walk in the park, and no, I don't run them nearly as often as I should (for learning purposes, so I can help others which is pretty much what I do), but I've had some practical nightmares trying to get one or several pieces of hardware working in a given Linux distro.

Sure, it's a complete bitch at times, but... and again this really isn't the place for Linux discussions... in the long run, when you stick to it and suddenly "EUREKA!!!" you get it working, man... that feeling is hard to beat. :D

well first I do not think bbz_ghost runs ubuntu, and yes, a simple command line does fix it, and thrid relax xorg 7.3 will fix that, because it will have a fallback, that should ensure xserver will run not matter how bad your mess it up, or if the right driver is not available.

lets just calm down and keep on topic, about colour schemes in vista.

Also any one got anyother vista themes, they wanna share, I think I wanna play around with some more. plx and thankyou.

Just for the record:

I installed Ubuntu 6.10 and Xubuntu 6.10 on my desktop machine yesterday and spent about 2 hours reading through forum postings at the Ubuntu Forums (great place, really, simply fantastic people over there with respects to support questions), and worked towards getting Beryl up and running which was the entire focus of my task.

Well, I didn't get Beryl running - damned ATI issues with the "ati" "radeon" and "fglrx" drivers and config files and other stuff, "oh my..."

But I installed, I read, I learned, etc. And yes, I'm still reading and learning more and already know what I did wrong... :p So later I'll image this XP install and try again.

</off_topic>

I keep doing lots of looking around for any and all possible new Vista themes. www.neowin.net has a Vista theming/skinning subforum but not much going on yet compared to the XP one - but then again, XP is over 5 years old, Vista just under a month... in time we'll see a ton. I posted the one(s) I did because so far I'd say they're the best looking ones, and with the additional colors they just kick ass... :)
