What board for this system

  • Intel Q9300 (or so)
  • 4870x2
  • Corsair 620 or 1000W modular
  • 8GB's RAM (Likely Corsair, OCZ, or Patriot)
  • 2 NEC Slim DVD burners
  • 2 Sata laptop drives
  • watercooling ala Tremoloes fine build (similar, but with my own flair)
  • stuffed into a Lian Li V350

This will be my main machine, and as you can see from my sig, I tend to keep them for some time. I actually need onboard graphics or a second X4 or greater PCIE (I can add one of my 78GT's or a 68 GS I have) specifically dedicated to a second monitor. I'll be doing lots of graphics and video work, hence the need for the abundance of RAM. I will also need at LEAST 5 SATA ports. Gaming isn't my priority, but when I want to play, I want no problems. DO you guys also suggest a separate sound card? I output via optical to a 5.1 HT system.

Whew! If it helps, I've had good luck with ASUS and DFI, and one build with a Foxconn/EVga. I'll use whatever is reliable, and overclocking is secondary to me.

Aight, is there any reason to choose the more expensive HDMI version of the Asus P5E's if I won't be using the onboard's HDCP compliance? I like the sound of the corporate version with support for higher Ram speeds. Is there any companies I should look into (besides what is at the Egg?)
 
Your main requirement for 5 SATA ports minimum is what's limiting your motherboard selection.

Anyway, no reason to choose the P5E-VM over the P5E-VM DO if you're not going to use the onboard HDMI port. However there might be a slight chance that the DO may not OC as well as the P5E-VM due to the DO's more business focus.

Only problem with either the P5E motherboards is that they only have one PCI-E x1 slot which are not physically compatible with the PCI-E x16 cards you have. So you may have to get a PCI video card. And no you cannot use onboard graphics and external graphics at the same time with Intel chipsets. AMD's 780G chipset can do that but not Intel.

But why have a second video card dedicated just to the second monitor? That video card you chose can support up to two monitors.

As for sound, try out the onboard sound first and if it's not to your liking, then get a sound card. Onboard sound has improved a lot in the past few years and is enough for many people out there, even some audiophiles.
 
The P5E-VM HDMI has two 1x and one 16x PCI-e slots (and a PCI if you want it). But, actually using a large card like the 4870X2 with a second card in the PCI slot... That's gonna be a tough squeeze... Not to mention that you will have a heck of a time sqeezing the 4870X2 into the V350.

Ah. I was accustomed to SLi, and I cannot run 2 monitors off the cards without jumping through hoops. Are there any new boards releasing soon that I should wait on? Also, what, about the 4870x2, would make it any harder to fit in the case than other cards? They're supposed to be the same length, I believe.

Hell, is there a case that would suit my needs better, without resorting to the STacker or Masstige-sized cases I have now? I'm not above using a bit larger case, but I'm trying to stay small whilst still powerful.:confused:

Edit: Water cooling is not required, I just like its tendency to be quiet. So, I would still prefer at LEAST a spot for a 120mm radiator internally, but even that isn't a must. Some Scythe, Zalman, and Thermalright sinks would likely keep me happy as long as I don't go OC crazy.

I see there is a version of the V350 out now that can use the Ninja mini with ease. I can fit a 240mm rad in the front for the video card, and go with the Ninja on the CPU. Sound reasonable? Well, at least as soon as the cards come out, and EK makes a block for them. I can use onboard to surf while I wait.

Well Intel's new G45 chipset motherboards are coming out later this month. But they're not really worth waiting for unless you want PCI-E 2.0, slightly better overclocking ability and 6 SATA ports standard. The 4870X2 is 10.5 inches long which the Lian Li case can accommodate.

You might want to check out the NZXT Rogue case. See if it's any better than the Lian Li.
 
The Rogue is HUGE for what it is. It's the same size as the Mountainmods H2Go or Bobslay. Hmmmm
