hey, i just got my sapphire X800GTO today (non fireblade), and I was lookin to see if i could mod the core to run with 16 pipes, but it seems like i've got it already. wtf. The confusing part is taht I pull 4300-4500 on 3dmark 05. Shouldn't I pull atleast 5k with 16 pipes? Wtf. Here's a picture and riva tuner, ati tray tools, ati Tools, and rabit.

hmm... my card's specs are, from what i know, a Sapphire X800GTO 512Mb GDDR2 clocked at 400//800 . you think an X850XT PE could run on my card? The RAM frequency seems awefully high for GDDR2. Could I recover my card without RMA'ing it if it ends up being screwed up?

If u choose to flash to a bios, make sure the bios is compatible first!
 
I doubt that it will work, I'm pretty sure it'll f*Ck up the timings on the ram. plus, you can just bump the voltage on the core and get better results.
 
Hmm.... I was thinking of flashing the card. can anyone provide any guides or links that helped you guys out when you first flashed your X800s? thanks.
 
it SHOULD make it, as always, keep a PCI card for back up in case the flash goes bad :p

although you should just OC it... my 6800NU unlocked and overclocked pulls about that...
 
Did you buy it new? If was used or refurbished, somebody may have already done some BIOS tweaking.
 
I got it new from newegg. Anyway, does anyone know where I can get a PCI graphic card for about 10 dollars? I'm gonna try to flash this card, but I don't want to screw it up and not be able to recover. Anyone provide links or something? thanks.
 
I seriously say not to flash it. It won't make a big difference; Your Fireblade edition card uses a different kind of memory... GDDR2 not GDDR3, so I'm almost positive that something is gonna fail in that area.

Oh also I think I have a couple PCI video cards, if you're interested.
 
if you're card has ddr2 don't flash it at all, the XT and XT PE use DDR 3 which is different voltages and timings on ram ~~ probably less V's for the ram on the GDDR3 models
 
hmm... so just don't do it? If it's almost guaranteed to screw my card up, i'll pass on the flash. But I still don't get why I would score 4500 if four different programs said i had 16 active pixel pipelines. You guys have a clue? Everything was turned off. Vsync, AA, AF, everything that wasn't needed. I almost dropped my desktop res just in case to 1024x768 along with it.
 
Just OC it as far as you can. Flashing = bad idea with different spec'd cards.
 
Do NOT EVER flash that card with a GDDR3 bios if its a GDDR2 card are you kidding me? Its 100% sure it will not work.

yea. I realized that. I'm not flashin my card now =). But i'm wondering why my graphic card is so slow if I"ve got 16 active pipelines. Does the fact that I'm at 400//800 clocks mean anything when I've got 16 pipes? Shouldn't I still pull higher marks than my X800 in 3dmark 05?
 
The X850XT has at least 120mhz extra core speed and much faster RAM. There's your difference. I'd say you're right about on target for 3dmark score.

BTW...you can get a refurbished x850xt PCIe card for $130 or so from newegg...that's what I did ;).
 
i'm on par with 16 pipes? I've got an MSI X800 RX800-TD128E card and it pulls 4300 on my system OCd. How can a 12 pipe card and a 16 pipe card score so closely on 05? it doesn't make sense.


O. and would RAM sinks improve my overclock? I felt my graphic card and it was really warm. Is there something cheap (like 10-20 dollar range) that works decently (for the price) that can cool my card down? And do you think that would improve my overclock by much?
 
I wouldnt get ram sinks, they dont help mem oc that much (atleast in my case). I would try to figure out why your score is so low for a 16 pipe card.
If a 12 pipe x800 Vanilla at lower clocks can do 4300 it simply doesnt make sense for a 16 pipe X800GTO and higher clicks to do only 4500...
 
Do you have a game you can test it on? 3D Mark might just be funky, but if a game were to show a marked difference...

What kind of clockspeed is that X800 running?
 
its running at 430//740. My X800GTO was running 420//1000. I don't get how they could score so close.... anyways, for games, I pull about 100 in CS:S (full graphics, 6xAA, 16xAF, 1024x768) and 70 in BF2 (Full graphics, 4xAA, 16xAF, 1024x768)
 
hey, by the way, would I void my warantee if i pulled off my heatsink, applied thermal compound, and put the heatsink back on? My GPU's running at about 70C. Thanks.
 
i got a x800gto2 :( but the r430 core so my ocing sucks only can do 420/530 :( with 16 pipes

i read some where (dont remember exactly) that ati was trying to get rid of their stock of "old cores" and selling them without modding/cutting pipes... after all the R430 is what, 2 generations old now (counting the X1900 and X1800 separately)

yes, more than likely... that is a load temp i hope... which would be normal for a stock hsf

as for your score on 3d mark... id say its the memory thats holding the card back, do some overclocking (although i dont expect the memory to go much further) and see what kind of scores you get

no. it's 70C stock. It's pissing me off. I have my GPU fan running 100% (which I don't like), and the GPU temps go to 60C, still hot. That's a Idle. Yea, I ran my graphic card at 400//980 and managed to pull 4800. Is there any kind of good cooling to cool down my RAM so i can hit higher overclocks? It's not some part limitation since it didn't crash and the operating value of GDDR2 is between 400-500mhz atleast (and I was receiving artifacts). You guys recommend anything?
 
if you are not getting artifacts you may be ok, but those temps seem too high... at full load and a stock hsf my x800gto with a r423 core was in the lower 70's... with a vf700 it doesnt get out of the 60's under full load

i would suggest making sure the hsf is seated properly... also clean off the stock thermal compound and put on a new application (this may void the warranty so do so at your own discretion)

if it still runs hot either rma the card or get something like a vf700/vf900 http://www.clubit.com/product_detail.cfm?itemno=A1924225&cmp=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r
(this will definitely void a warranty, but they cool your gpu down and are very quiet)
 
is there any kind of RAM coolers too? My RAM starts to artifact at 430 mhz (860mhz effective). It feels hot. Is there anything efficient for the RAM?
 
Sounds like it's bandwidth starved. It's running 260mhz slower on the ram despite having 4 more pixel pipes, so it ends up around the same speed. I'd o/c the ram as much as you can, but there's the reason it's a GTO and not an XT.
 
is there a reason why sapphire downclocked my ram from 490? everyone else i've seen has their cards at 400//490 (X800GTO with the same specs, GDDR2). why's mine slower?
