Maybe this is a bit dumb question....I was wondering, can this Western Digital Caviar RE2 WD5000ABYS hard drive be used for external storage in a Wiebetech ToughTech FS enclosure? I mean I know they are compatible but I am not sure whether the hard drive is suitable for external storage.

Does anyone know anything about the above enclosure? Quality? Etc.
Or what enclosure do you recommend. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The Weibe site says that the "all aluminum design draws heat away from the drive" but I'm a little skeptical it will keep the YS cool.

I have a bunch of the 500GB YS drives and they run very hot just sitting in the open on my desk. I would probably look at a quieter, cooler drive like a samsung unless you need balls to the wall speed.

Try checking out silentpcreview.com for some reviews on cool, quiet drives.

The enclosure you wanted was this. It was 39.99 'till a coupla days ago. I'll still recommend it, but not for $70.00. Use your shopping powers to get a better price. :)

External 3.5" enclosures come in many flavors..... internal SATA and PATA connections, Firewire 400, 800, USB, eSATA, or a combo pack, and active and passive cooled. If you're going to have the external powered "on" for any length of time, I would recommened active cooling. These things get hot, and I like my HDDs to stay around 40c, so for me, active cooling is a "must".

Right now, I use the linked Antec MX-1, this single CoolGear unit, and this swappable unit. The single unit is very quiet. The swappable unit has 2 fans, and is kinda loud. I need to get ny butt in gear and change those fans. :(

What you need to do, is determine what interface(s) you need, and the length of time the unit will be powered "on".

Excellent info. Thanks.
It's really interesting, the Antec enclosure drops about 10C of the temperature which is obviously due to the cooling system (circulating the air with a fan.) http://www.silentpcreview.com/article728-page3.html

I mean the interesting part is this: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article673-page1.html
This Icy Dock does not increase the temperature of the drive. I mean this sounds a little bit unbelievable. (Or maybe I misinterpreted the article). Could this be due to the aluminium housing? I mean the entire enclosure serves as a cooler.

The way how I am planning to use the external storage will be pretty general. Hooked up to my laptop (or desktop) as a backup storage. Sometimes it will be constantly (24/7) connected to take care of back-ups, and sometimes just pluged in for couple of hours and watch a movie from it or load load music/data etc. and then unplugged.

I have two of the Antec units and I love them. My friend also has one he uses for extra storage on his HD Tivo..

Just a coupla observations here;

1) I'm with you on the drive temps. in that case. I don't know how long it was running, or what they were doing. That's not to say that "convection" cooling doesn't work, but my experience with that type of cooling left a lot to be desired, and my experiences don't reflect his. Most articles I've read mirror my experiences.
2) If you'll notice, this unit uses a power brick. Many of the active cooled units have the power transformer unit inside. Not a big plus or minus, but those standard power cords come in handy when you're my age. ;)
3) I'll tell ya, if I was going to use one of these 24/7, I'd be gettin' active cooling.
4) It all boils down to two things, how much is your data worth, and how lucky do ya feel? :D
