Okay, well, I tried it once and had problems with the graphical end and had a slower machine at the time, so I pushed F@H to the side. Well, after some thought, I've decided to start F@H up again. My main question is, how do I go about throwing this into the background with the console, so I don't have to look at it? I installed it as a service, so I'm guessing if I reboot that'll do it?
 
Yep, upon reboot it will run. You can also start it manually through the services console.
 
If you go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services, you can just start it there without the reboot. Just look for the entry for FAH@C:+.... and fire it up. :D

If you said yes to the service option upon install, just reboot and you'll never see it again. :)

 
Okay, I'm a bit of a neat-freak and I setup F@H on my desktop. So, I moved the .exe into the Program Files dir, and re-configured it and then closed it, and started up the service. It's now running quietly in the background folding for Team 33 under tsuehpsyde. ;) Now, how do I remove the first service (the one pointing to my desktop) that it put there? I disabled it so it won't cause a problem, but I just don't like having extra shit laying around.

In the registry, find the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\FAH@C:+....

where the last part is FAH@<path to the desktop>

Delete that whole key. And you're done.
 
In regedit go to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\FAH@C:+....

After the C:+ should be the path to the first service setup on your desktop, the one that has that, should be the entire key you delete. After that, reboot and the service will be gone.

 
Thanks guys. :) I'm firing up my old Pentium 3 750MHz to borg that, and I'm gonna ask my buddy who has fileservers that literally pull 0 idle loads if I can borg those, and I might borg my dedicated server, if I can find a way to keep it loading without taking away from it's serving power.

Hopefully I can kick this thing in the ass. :p
 
you can restrict F@H to use only 90% or 75% or 5% of the CPU ;)

I've got two machines folding, trying to get a third one (old Athlon, was free but is a bitch of a bitch to get to cooperate ;)), and I went to setup my dedicated server on 10% usage to start out, but found one issue. It WILL NOT ask me how much CPU usage I would like to use in the config under Linux. I tried both 502 and 504 (I'm running 502 on my desktop/home linux server), and both did the same thing. I can't just let F@H run full-bore all the time, since it'll lag my website/gameserver.

Ideas?
 
Part of the thing with F@H is that it should give any needed cycles back. If you can't get it to run properly, you might just give it a shot and see if it keeps usage in check. Theoretically you shouldn't have any problems as long as you don't run -advmethods or big WU's as those crank up the memory requirements and have caused problems for people.

As for the 10% usage, you might consider timeless WU's, the config calls them units without deadlines, so you don't have any late WU's.

 
I am just offering this up as another way to deal with the console if you (or someone else) would rather just shoot the console to the tray. Try the free version of this.

I've got the console running as a service on my desktop, but I'm worrying about running it in linux. ;) Has anyone here used F@H in a linux server environment? I mean, I'll try it, but I don't want the game-server lagging (we all know how crucial optimal game-server performance is, especially in CS:S) or my web-server for that matter (moved from rented web services to being hosted on our dedicated box because their server was entirely too over-packed and our site just diddn't feel "snappy").

I'm also trying to re-build a userbase, so I don't want to "try it out" and have it lag everyone outta our server. :p
 
Also, even though I've got 3 boxes running F@H, do I still keep them all as machine ID 1?
 
Use the "finstall" script - it makes it dead easy to install the console. As for performance, it's not that bad a hit as long as you configure them for normal or timeless WUs. Machine IDs have to be unique on a given machine, but not universally. That is, box 1 can run machine ID 1 as well as box 2, but you can't have 2 instances of machine ID 1 on box 3.

My console is under control (at least, for windows ;)) so don't worry about that. It's in the background, folding away.

I've got 3 boxes, my box (in sig) a Pentium3 750MHz beside my router that's folding, and my dedicated server that runs SourceKills.com, which is a 3GHz Pentium4 with a gig of memory. Now, if I run all three of those as Machine ID 1, they should all run fine, correct? For some reason, the 3rd box is acting weird...like, it's not starting off the same as the other 2 did. Not sure if there's some sort of conflict with my other 2 instances.

There is no problem with running all the boxen with Machine ID 1. All of them should be running that as long as they only have one instance running per machine.

The other two boxen should not have any effect on the third. All they do is grab a WU and start crunching on it. There is no communication between boxen.

If it seems like it's taking a long time to do anything on the PIII, it's because it may have grabbed a WU that takes a while to fold and PIII's aren't exactly speed demons anymore. (I should know, I run one as my gaming box)

Actually, it was the Pentium4 server that was giving me problems, but they seemed to have worked themselves out. My first WU on my desktop finished last night, just waiting for that to update. Thanks guys. ;)
